00:00A 58-year-old woman and a 74-year-old man died at a popular swimming spot north of Townsville
00:07yesterday afternoon. Police say the pair got into trouble in fast-flowing waters. Emergency
00:13services rushed to the scene and worked on the two, but they were unable to be revived and died
00:18at the scene. Police say the pair were locals and were on a family outing at the swimming spot
00:23when the incident happened. Locals reported several other incidents at the area on Sunday,
00:28with one boy being transported to hospital by ambulance. The Townsville City Council Mayor
00:32says that signs were put in place to warn people of the dangers, but some locals say that more
00:37drastic action should have been taken. Police have warned people about the dangers of swimming
00:42in creeks and riverways, especially after periods of prolonged rain. I'd just like to take this
00:47opportunity first and foremost to say to the family and friends of those two persons who
00:52have been located deceased. My deepest sympathy goes out to them and also a timely reminder
00:58for the members of the Townsville community to be extremely aware of their surroundings,
01:03especially when entering waterways and riverways, in light of the weather event that we've had
01:08just in the recent couple of weeks. An investigation is underway and a report is being prepared for
01:13the corner.
