WATCH: ACT programs for family violence are not properly monitored, says Dr Hayley Boxall.
Transcript
00:00I don't think it's going to be controversial to say that a lot of the programs that we have
00:04aren't working to reduce violence against women and particularly intimate partner violence.
00:10That's not to say that's an ACT problem. I think that this is actually a global problem.
00:15We just really haven't gotten that treatment part of the puzzle really right yet. There are
00:22going to be some programs that are really effective for some people under some circumstances,
00:27but we really actually don't have a good understanding of what that looks like. We
00:32kind of just put everyone through the same types of programs and that's despite knowing that there's
00:37a lot of diversity amongst perpetrators in terms of what they need to stop offending and why they're
00:44offending. So what we really need to understand is that we're not going to arrest our way out
00:48of this problem. We need to develop more nuanced, I guess, referral pathways and understanding of
00:54what programs work for who. But we really know that it's when you do that intensive case management
01:00in terms of working with the offender for long periods of time, not just 8 to 16 weeks,
01:07that's when you really do see some really observable behaviour change.
