00:02 URIMAI Chairman P. Ramasamy has defended a now-postponed citizenship application program
00:07 that was scheduled to take place in Johor Bahru.
00:10 In a statement today, the former Penang Deputy Chief Minister slammed those who politicized
00:15 the program, saying that even if it was hosted by political parties, there was nothing political
00:20 about it.
00:21 Ramasamy said the organizers were merely trying to speed up the process of procuring much-needed
00:27 documents for the stateless.
00:29 He also said there would be no need to set up voluntary bodies to assist these people
00:34 if the National Registration Department was more humane in resolving the issue of statelessness.
00:39 The June 30th event organized by DAP Assemblyman Chen Ka Eng was postponed following a misunderstanding
00:46 on social media about a promotional poster.
00:49 JPN has also denied being involved in the program, saying that citizenship applications
00:54 can only be made in person at its counters.
00:57 However, Chen, the Stulang Assemblyman, defended the initiative, saying it was intended to
01:02 help people who didn't have citizenship documents or birth certificates.
