00:00The Vice-Chief of PKR's student wing, Mahasiswa Keadilan Malaysia, has resigned from the party
00:08after the Dewan Rakyat passed controversial amendments to the constitution's citizenship
00:13provisions.
00:14In a post on X this evening, Mahasiswa Keadilan Malaysia Vice-Chief Yap Siang said he had
00:19submitted his resignation letter shortly after the amendments were approved.
00:24In later posts, he slammed the whole ministry over its engagement sessions on the constitutional
00:29amendment bill, saying it was nothing more than to meet the basic requirement of consulting
00:33stakeholders.
00:35He had attended the sessions representing the wing.
00:38However, he said when he asked questions during the sessions, he was met with responses saying
00:43there are no stateless orang asli anymore, just migrants pretending to be stateless.
00:48The Constitution Amendment Bill 2024, which will next be brought to the Dewan Negara,
00:53aims to grant citizenship to overseas-born children of Malaysian women.
00:57The bill, criticized by groups from Sabah and Sarawak, included a proposal to remove
01:01automatic citizenship for children born to Malaysian permanent residents.
01:06Critics argue this would worsen the statelessness issue in Sabah and limit access to education,
01:11healthcare and employment.
