There is a new man at the helm of the Trinidad and Tobago Pharmacy Board.

The final election phase took place last Thursday and when all votes were tabulated, Ricardo Mohammed was confirmed as the new President.


He says one key area of focus for him will be the importation of medicine.

00:00 Mohamid explains that in February the council members were elected.

00:10 and four members appointed by the Ministry of Health
00:13 nominated a president and a vote was taken.
00:16 That part of the process was done on April 18, 2024,
00:21 with Mohamid emerging as the head of the new board.
00:26 Part of his new focus is dealing with issues regarding the importation of medicine.
00:32 The pharmacy profession has been faced with significant challenges.
00:37 One of them is the access or importation of pharmaceuticals into the country.
00:45 We will now be engaging the different stakeholders from the Ministry of Health,
00:50 Chemistry, Food and Drugs, to re-establish the protocols,
00:57 double-check on all registration processes,
01:01 and then let's try to find ways to improve every single aspect of the industry.
01:07 He adds that another priority is dealing with the expiration dates on drugs.
01:13 Expiries in most companies are very few.
01:17 For those who engage in wrongful practices,
01:21 we will be updating our regulatory stance on many things
01:25 and we will be monitoring how we practice going forward.
01:29 Additionally, he notes that part of his mandate as new president of the pharmacy board
01:34 is establishing a sense of belonging among pharmacists,
01:38 re-establishing committees and revamping educational programs.
