00:00 Hi there, Mark Dunford here with Sam Morton. We're in Milan, we got off our 8 hour coach
00:07 journey from Rome straight after the game last night where Brighton were humbled 4-0
00:12 in their last 16 year Oper league first leg tie against Roma. Sam, where did it all go
00:17 wrong for Brighton last night?
00:18 Yeah, it was a tough one Mark. It was one that didn't go well from the first whistle
00:24 really. I think it started to be a bit of an end to end game. I think Roma were having
00:30 such big chances straight away. I think Lukaku had a headed chance very early on that was
00:35 saved brilliantly by Jason Steele. But straight away you felt what was coming, defensively
00:39 they weren't fully up to scratch and they did quickly concede that first goal.
00:44 It was Jairo Nibale who was in form and obviously one of the top players on the team.
00:48 It was a great run wasn't it?
00:49 Great run.
00:50 They timed it perfectly.
00:51 I think the offside throughout, obviously Brighton were playing quite a high line and
00:55 you took it around Jason Steele and finished. It did look like it was offside and it was
00:58 given as offside but a quick VAR check determined it as a goal. You felt Brighton needed a quick
01:05 response but unfortunately they fell 2-0 down. It was a huge mistake from Lewis Dunne that
01:10 caused it. You're obviously not sure what you're trying to do with a long ball. You
01:14 look like you're trying to control it rather than just kicking the ball into touch. Lukaku
01:18 took full advantage in taking the ball and powering it past Jason Steele who had no chance
01:24 to win the goal. But they'd been in that position before in Marseille, 2-0 down at
01:29 half-time so all hope wasn't lost. They had the second leg of the cup but the worst possible
01:34 thing happened and they conceded two further goals in the second half. It was a shame really
01:39 because the third goal in particular did come after some improved performance. It looked
01:45 like they were on the ascendancy and Idinga in particular was looking really lively. Even
01:50 in the first half he looked really good putting some crosses and Danny Welbeck missed quite
01:54 a few chances, mainly headed chances. Definitely a shining mark was Idinga in the game. It
01:59 was a shame they couldn't get that goal to half the deficit before falling 3-0 down.
02:04 Obviously there was some controversy with that goal because it did look offside. It did look
02:08 really offside, yeah. It was done in a clear replay which showed it as being onside really
02:13 but yeah, a crucial moment in the game and a moment to put advantage in. It was a clear
02:17 and deserved win. As you say, a humbling result for Brighton.
02:21 Deservey had some interesting comments afterwards. He was saying that there's a lot of lessons
02:26 to learn for the club, for everybody in the club including Tony Bloom which seemed quite
02:30 a big statement, didn't it?
02:31 It was. Yeah, it was a big statement. The first time he's been so blunt in saying something
02:35 outright like that. I think he's hinted at it maybe a few times but this is the first
02:39 time he's outright said the owners have to take some blame as well. I think that's just
02:43 referring to the fact they didn't make any big signings in January to fill the gaps in
02:48 their team due to the huge injuries they have. It's a real shame really when you consider
02:53 the number of players that were out, even Gilles Petro, Karim Otaima, Soddy March. Just
02:59 some key players really and you just wonder what they could have done if all those players
03:03 were fit. So it's a case of what if. But they did have the players there to do some damage,
03:08 at least get a goal or two and they had the chances as well. You can't say they didn't
03:14 have the chances. So a real frustrating evening. I think the worst thing is it does kind of
03:18 make the hope go a bit dead.
03:20 Is there no hope at all do you think next week?
03:22 I think it'll be a miracle. They were able to get four goals to take it to extra time
03:28 or obviously five to win it. But you never know. We'll hope for a miracle I guess.
03:34 Yeah, well it's been emotional and it's a miracle we've got here and we're hopefully
03:38 getting our last leg to Milan Malpensa and then to Gatwick. So thanks for watching.
