00:02 - Sam McQuillan from Legal Sports Report here in the house.
00:07 And I do wonder whether or not we'll get the actual data
00:12 as to like how much this new app from Apple is downloaded.
00:16 And if this is a game changer as far as checking,
00:19 scores, odds, and Sam McQuillan is with us.
00:21 Like everybody, Sam has their favorite app
00:24 that they check their scores on, right?
00:26 Like for me, I have one of the apps on my phone
00:30 and I have the SportsGrid app, so I check on that.
00:33 I have the score, which you may be familiar with also,
00:36 I also check on that.
00:37 And I wonder Sam, if Apple with their launch yesterday
00:40 of this new app is going to surpass some of these,
00:44 if people are gonna use this in their daily life,
00:47 'cause really isn't that the key to them having success
00:50 that they want this to be a part of the mainstream,
00:53 checking odds, et cetera?
00:56 - Yeah, first of all, love the plug for the SportsGrid app.
00:59 Go download it if you don't have it already.
01:00 It's a great app, check the scores and everything.
01:02 But yeah, kind of to your point, I agree.
01:05 I have my apps, I like to use Bleacher Report.
01:08 The score obviously is a big one as well.
01:11 And it's really interesting to see Apple finally getting
01:13 in the sports space.
01:14 They've been kind of on the sidelines for a while,
01:17 watching, doing a couple of TV deals through Apple TV.
01:20 Obviously you have Friday night baseball,
01:23 so some games on there,
01:24 and then they have a contract with the MLS as well,
01:26 which obviously soccer isn't as big,
01:28 but it's significant to have a whole league.
01:31 So it's interesting that they have this new app, Apple Sports.
01:34 I'm really fascinated to see personally
01:36 how much they integrate it with the rest of the iPhone.
01:39 I think that's been one thing that we've seen
01:41 really help people adopt things quicker.
01:45 Is this gonna be something where there's a button
01:47 and you can throw something in your iMessages real quick,
01:50 and there's a score you send your buddy,
01:52 or if you're typing out something,
01:53 is it gonna say, hey, do you wanna check the score
01:56 or send the score or something like that?
01:58 They would kind of get you away from these other apps
02:00 that aren't owned by Apple,
02:01 but people like to use just because
02:03 they're kind of familiar with them, that sort of thing.
02:06 Whether or not a game will pop up on your calendar,
02:09 like do you wanna add it to your calendar?
02:10 That kind of thing.
02:11 I think that's gonna be really cool
02:13 to watch how far they go.
02:14 Obviously Apple is really good with tech.
02:17 So the fact that they're building an app like this
02:19 kind of gives me hope that maybe some of the buggy apps
02:23 we've seen that can be delayed, even Sportsbook sometimes,
02:26 there's kind of a solution to that
02:27 to kind of simplify everything
02:29 and make everything easier from user experience.
02:32 Now those apps, the score, Leacher Report,
02:35 they all have exclusive odds partners.
02:38 We've seen as Sportsbook gets bigger and bigger,
02:41 all of a sudden the odds are in the apps.
02:43 And probably the most notable thing for me covering this
02:45 was the fact that DraftKings odds
02:47 are in the Apple Sports app.
02:49 It's no kind of mistake that they're the same exact odds
02:52 on the DraftKings Sportsbook.
02:54 DraftKings came out yesterday and said,
02:55 "Yep, those are our odds, we're excited."
02:57 But didn't really go more into
02:59 what the partnership would involve.
03:01 Obviously, the score owned by Penn uses ESPN bet odds,
03:05 and we've seen ESPN ads as well for ESPN bet.
03:10 So this is kind of in line with a lot of deals
03:13 that companies like BetMGM have done recently as well,
03:16 partnering with Twitter or X as it's now called
03:19 to integrate their odds in
03:20 and kind of get their name out there
03:23 and their odds in front of more people.
03:25 We haven't really seen many companies
03:27 like do things with it yet besides just having the odds.
03:30 So it kind of remains to be seen how far,
03:33 whether you're gonna be able to click a button
03:34 and all of a sudden you have a bet slip in DraftKings
03:37 or if you can bet through the Apple Sports app,
03:39 that kind of thing.
03:40 But we've seen like companies like Apple, Google, Amazon,
03:43 kind of the Holy Grail to borrow a phrase
03:46 from my editor, Adam Candy, for these sports books
03:49 in terms of these are the first places
03:51 that people go on the internet to check a lot of things.
03:54 And if you can get your name, your brand right there,
03:57 it can be big from that standpoint.
03:59 So it's a pretty interesting deal.
04:01 We don't know kind of the financial terms yet,
04:03 what's to come.
04:05 We've seen DraftKings kind of move
04:07 to these more efficient customer acquisition deals,
04:10 as opposed to newer sports books like Bet365,
04:14 Fanatics and ESPN bet, which are just spending a lot
04:16 on promos.
04:17 DraftKings has really kind of been vocal about,
04:20 we wanna spend money on these deals
04:22 that are gonna get us to different audiences,
04:24 not necessarily just pump out promo money and stuff.
04:27 But the fact that Apple has a sports app now
04:29 where you can see live odds, it's pretty crazy,
04:32 six years into sports betting.
04:33 We're at this point already and it seems like,
04:36 there's gonna be more to come eventually on this.
04:38 So exciting to follow this for sure.
