00:04:31 And sometimes you have a season like this, which is so short,

00:04:35 that sometimes all the music just ain't cutting through

00:04:38 on the radio station.

00:04:39 Some DJs even download music.

00:04:41 But for me, I'm happy.

00:04:43 I'm happy.

00:04:44 I have life.

00:04:45 I have love.

00:04:45 And I'm here on TV in front of my country.

00:04:48 How does Ricky Jai-- because, yes, you

00:04:50 have been in the industry for so many years--

00:04:53 how does Ricky Jai remain relevant in all of this?

00:04:57 Really?

00:04:58 I try to stay on the ground.

00:05:00 And I try to touch base with the youth all the time, you know?

00:05:04 Back when I started, I started writing music

00:05:07 with Gregory Ballantine and Kelly Phillips.

00:05:09 And over the years, you know, the song change,

00:05:12 the melodic structures of the music was changing.

00:05:16 So, you know, we had an era with Kenny Phillips, Lester, and Paul.

00:05:21 And then, you know, that changed.

00:05:23 Younger producers came into the game.

00:05:24 Marshall had his group of producers.

00:05:27 Casey Phillips came on the scene.

00:05:29 After Casey, now you have a whole set of new people.

00:05:32 And, you know, I just look at going on as an artist.

00:05:36 I can't be stuck in the '90s or the '80s, you know?

00:05:39 I always want to be--

00:05:40 I always want to be going forward, listening to all the fellas

00:05:43 and then the rhymes and the flow of the language on the land,

00:05:46 you know what I mean?

00:05:47 So I know that I could keep up with it.

00:05:51 I know I have the ability to do it.

00:05:53 So I keep reaching out to younger writers.

00:05:56 Like this year in particular, I work with Bjorn Graham, KVG.

00:06:00 Last year, I worked with him as well.

00:06:01 So it's all about following the trends and, you know,

00:06:06 touching base with people who are relevant in the industry,

00:06:09 like Trini Baby. This is a young lady who--

00:06:12 she worked on my project this year.

00:06:13 You know, so that's how I do it.

00:06:15 That's how I do it.

00:06:16 And then you got to believe in yourself too, most of all.

00:06:19 - What's a number to the ambassadorship

00:06:23 that you have given to us?

00:06:25 - Well, I've been doing this thing for 37 years now.

00:07:28 I was with Iowa.

00:07:35 So it's a great feeling to be still in the game and to still be sharing the stage

00:07:40 with the younger people, the Nailah Blackman, the Lyrical,

00:07:43 the Bungee Garlin, you know?

00:07:45 - It's a great feeling to be out there still and still impacting.
