A 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck the Kyrgyzstan-Xinjiang border region on Tuesday (Jan 23) morning with reports of several injuries and collapsed houses. No casualties have been reported so far.

00:00 Rescue and relief efforts are underway in Xinjiang's Kizil-Su Kyrgyz Prefecture, bordering
00:06 China and Kyrgyzstan, which was hit by a 7.1 magnitude earthquake on Tuesday morning.
00:12 Teams of personnel have been deployed to the affected areas where several injuries and
00:16 collapsed buildings were reported.
00:18 The rescuers were combing the debris to locate survivors while injured victims were sent
00:23 to hospitals.
00:24 The epicenter of the earthquake struck at 2.09am, at a depth of 22km in the mountainous
00:30 area of Wuxi County.
00:33 The epicenter is located about 50km from the county, with five villages within a 20km
00:39 radius.
00:40 As of 8am, more than 40 aftershocks have been recorded, with the strongest being 5.3 magnitude.
00:48 No casualties have been reported so far.
00:51 The earthquake was also felt in other major cities in Xinjiang, including Urumqi, Hotan
00:56 and Kashgar.
