00:09 in hockey, I thought we'd get some more clarity here as to what happened.
00:13 The NHL didn't give us any Sam as to why they suspended him,
00:16 they just said they did.
00:17 Pinto's not giving us any specifics here, but they're letting him back.
00:21 So I mean, I don't know how serious this could be.
00:24 Maybe one day I guess we'll learn.
00:26 There's probably something really silly to this story that we don't know.
00:29 Maybe he'll be bet on the dog show or something, I don't know, God.
00:33 >> Yeah, well, under NHL rules, he actually would be able to bet on the dog show,
00:39 which is why this is such a weird, weird situation.
00:42 And it's just curious and confusing as to what actually went down.
00:46 Shane Pinto, the Ottawa's Senators forward suspended for half the season,
00:51 which that's a really big suspension, 41 games.
00:54 He's eligible to come back next week.
00:56 And like you said, it was for violating the NHL's betting policy.
00:59 He talked to reporters last week for the first time since it happened, but
01:04 he really didn't, he said I'm not gonna get into exactly what happened.
01:08 It was his first interview since the ban.
01:10 He did mention a few things like he hopes he can be an example for
01:13 people in the future and doesn't wanna make silly, stupid mistakes,
01:17 things of that nature.
01:18 What actually, what we do know about the situation is that he had a gambling
01:22 account which was in the United States, now a member of Ottawa in Canada.
01:25 So he made an account in the US and it was flagged for
01:29 unusual activity by this integrity monitoring service,
01:34 which then contacted a third party that worked with the league office to then come
01:38 down and hand the suspension to him, perhaps in all of that process,
01:42 there was a non-disclosure agreement signed, something of that nature.
01:45 But what did come out is that there was no evidence that he wagered on NHL games.
01:50 That's what the, as far as league has said.
01:52 So then it becomes really curious as to what actually did he do?
01:56 You're allowed to bet on other sports if you're in the NHL,
01:59 just like you can in the NBA, just like you can in the NFL.
02:02 You obviously can't bet on the games if you're a part of the league.
02:06 So the fact that he didn't do that either,
02:08 it kind of leaves you scratching your head on what exactly happened.
02:13 Other leagues like the NHL have rules where you can't bet from a team facility.
02:17 It's not clear if that was something that was involved here.
02:20 But the NHL is also different than the other leagues in that,
02:23 it allows its players to do sponsorships with sportsbooks.
02:27 You have a number of players who are open ambassadors for different betting apps,
02:32 which always kind of blurs the lines of integrity when a player is saying,
02:36 "Hey, bet on my over tonight or bet on my under tonight or bet on this."
02:40 And you have situations like this pop up.
02:42 So like you said, maybe some more will come out in the future.
02:46 He said he was kind of caught off guard when the suspension was originally handed down
02:51 and came out of nowhere.
02:52 He said a lot of players have reached out to him to kind of ask about it or learn from it or whatever.
02:57 But the fact that we have no idea what happened and it just wasn't him betting on an actual game,
03:03 it makes you question what actually happened.
03:05 And then in the future, if more of this kind of stuff happens,
03:08 are we going to get more clarity from the league?
03:10 Obviously, the NHL or the NFL has been very forward
03:14 and they've come out with all their suspensions and said what everyone's done,
03:17 other sports, the same thing.
03:19 So this is pretty much the first suspension in the NHL that happened
03:23 in the legal sports betting kind of era.
03:25 So it's going to be something we look back on when more of these undoubtedly come down
03:30 and wonder how this compares and half the season, that kind of thing.
03:34 So, yeah, it's a weird story.
03:37 And hopefully, as we go forward, we'll get more information here.
