00:00All right, so back to the field we go.
00:01Let's talk about the one major free agent that was still left out there last week
00:06and ended up signing a one-year deal in Zach Gallin.
00:09He returns to Arizona, and knowing Zach the way that I do, Jack,
00:13from his time here in Miami, you can always appreciate his candidness
00:17and honesty when it came to this sort of stuff,
00:19where he basically said, looking back on it now,
00:21maybe the qualifying offer was what he should have essentially done.
00:25I mean, you don't hear players say that a lot,
00:27but he has always been really honest and forthright.
00:29Even in the media as well.
00:31I suppose that this could, in my opinion, Jack,
00:34work out maybe better than any off-season deal.
00:38Because Gallin's a pitcher.
00:39He's still very young.
00:40If he has a great year, he's going to square off against the Dodgers a lot
00:44and really good teams out West.
00:45There could be a huge payday for him at the end of the season.
00:49He said he had multi-year deals,
00:50but I kind of feel like maybe being back where he had his most success
00:55as a big leaguer could really help him down the line.
00:59Given what he signed for,
01:01you would assume that those multi-year deals were in the two for $30 million range,
01:05and he viewed a one for $22 million offer as the best thing for him.
01:09And I, too, love the candidness from him saying he probably should have just signed the qualifying offer.
01:14There were a couple of things that intrigued me about Gallin's free agency.
01:18He was the guy where it felt like it was the most delicate, the qualifying offer saga with him,
01:25because of what the contract year actually looked like.
01:27And we often see guys put together their best year during a contract year,
01:32when they enter free agency and they can really get paid because there are some financial implications there.
01:37Gallin had the worst healthy year of his career, really, since the very, very beginning in his walk year.
01:45So I was always going to be fascinated as to what type of contract he actually got on the open
01:52market this offseason.
01:53The other thing is, I think the draft pick attached to guys that are extended the qualifying offer and don't
01:58take it
01:59was really something that impacted his free agency.
02:02If he were to sign somewhere else, they were going, the Diamondbacks were going to get a pick at the
02:08end of the first round,
02:09and this would have forfeited a comp pick for the team that signed him.
02:12So I really don't know if there was, you know, too much incentive to forfeit a draft pick for a
02:19two-year, $30 million deal for Zach Gallin.
02:22So if he had those offers, really cool.
02:24But I think it's going to work out for him going back to a place where he's supremely comfortable.
