00:05 >> This was a story from last year about a player in the NHL.
00:10 I should probably just say hockey because he really wasn't much of an impact player.
00:14 But it doesn't take away from the story that a player was suspended last year for
00:19 what they called allegations of some sort of gambling issue.
00:23 His name was Shane Pinto.
00:25 But what was really interesting is that we really didn't get a lot of clarity as to
00:28 exactly why this player was suspended or what he did.
00:31 We're starting to learn a little bit more about that now.
00:33 So tell us what we've learned.
00:35 >> Yeah, Craig, that's the interesting part is we still don't really know.
00:40 Shane Pinto finally spoke last week for the first time since he was suspended
00:45 under the, for violating the NHL betting policy.
00:47 And he basically said I don't wanna go there.
00:50 It's believed there was some sort of negotiated settlement with the Players
00:53 Association and the player.
00:55 And so I guess we're not gonna hear anything about it.
00:58 Perhaps it leaks out at some point, whether that's later this year,
01:02 maybe next season, maybe five years from now.
01:04 But yeah, given the NHL's financial partnerships with these sports books,
01:09 I think it's super surprising they don't want the transparency.
01:11 I think that's the big takeaway here.
01:13 Pinto said, I've gotta be more mature.
01:15 Gambling is more prevalent, obviously, in your face now as it's been legalized
01:18 through over 30 states.
01:19 But yeah, I was a little surprised here, just that the lack of transparency.
01:24 I've asked Bill Daly, the deputy commissioner,
01:26 who's usually very forthcoming on multiple occasions, what happened here?
01:30 What is the benefit for the league,
01:31 given its financial relationships with sports books, for this to stay quiet?
01:34 He won't respond.
01:36 And so that's kinda where we're at is we think there's a settlement here.
01:40 We know that he was suspended for half the season,
01:42 which is an incredible amount of time.
01:43 He's eligible to return on January 21st.
01:46 We know there's apparently suspicious activity reported on his US sports betting
01:50 account, obviously placed for the Senators in Canada.
01:52 So where was he at the time?
01:53 I don't know.
01:54 We don't know those details.
01:55 We know there was a third party involved.
01:57 And we know that he did not bet on any games, the league said.
02:00 So yeah, a lot of questions here still as this kid comes back.
02:05 I mean, good for him for serving his time.
02:07 And he'll play, and he's like you said, he's maybe not the best player in
02:10 the Senators, but I think he came off a 20 goal year.
02:12 So pretty impactful player for them.
02:15 And you hope that he stays clean and can be an example, as he said, for
02:18 a lot of these players on what not to do so nobody else gets involved in this.
