She's often made headlines for her imperious display in local tournaments.

As such, it's no surprise that Aalisha Alexis has received a scholarship to attend university in the USA.

She spoke with TV6 while attending a training session at the National Racquet Centre.

00:00 Young sensation Alicia Alexis will leave these shores in the second week of January to take
00:04 up a tennis scholarship. A former student of St. Joseph's Convent Port of Spain, Alexis
00:09 is looking forward to attending Edward Waters University in Florida.
00:12 It was definitely a relief. We're all really excited. Having talked to the coach virtually,
00:18 we kind of formed that relationship and we're really excited to meet him in person and be
00:24 close enough to Trinidad to be able to come back and also the financial aspect not having
00:31 to pedestrian my parents is definitely a relief.
00:36 The 19-year-old has been training hard with local coach Kyle Hannes at the National Racquet
00:40 Center in Tagarigua. After all, she wants to be well prepared before heading to the
00:44 United States of America.
00:46 I actually haven't played any tournaments in Trinidad recently. There haven't been that
00:50 many around so I've just been focusing on training and preparing for the upcoming season
00:54 at school. But I have put together a portfolio based on my other achievements throughout
01:00 the years and that would have contributed to me getting the scholarship.
01:04 Her intention is to make the most of her stay at university, saying that her academics and
01:09 tennis are both very important to her.
01:12 I'm going to study marketing, so a marketing degree. I really enjoy playing matches and
01:18 being competitive and I feel like I thrive under those kind of environments that really
01:22 push me. So all the match play and training facilities, I think that will really improve
01:27 my tennis.
01:28 Her local coach is also the head of coaching and development for the Tennis Association
01:32 of TNT. He says Alicia's work ethic is second to none.
01:37 It has been indeed an honor and a privilege to work with Alicia. She has matured over
01:41 the years. She has dominated the junior circuit for a number of years in the under 16, under
01:46 18. She has done well. A very coachable athlete, I would say. Very receptive. She pays attention
01:52 to detail. So I'm extremely happy for her for this opportunity that she has gotten to
01:56 actually pursue and carry on further her tertiary education.
02:01 Even though Alexis is going abroad, her aim is to represent TNT in major tournaments in
02:05 the future.

02:07 - Good to go. - You good?
