00:00 While life in the Cairns CBD feels like it's returning to normal, just nine kilometres
00:07 away in the beachside suburb of Matron's Beach, the clean-up is well underway and for many
00:12 it feels like an insurmountable task.
00:15 These streets are in their fourth day without power.
00:18 Those who've stayed behind are using generators and ice to get by.
00:22 In the single-storey low-set homes, the mud is still thick and furniture and belongings
00:26 are being dragged to the curb.
00:29 Volunteers are now waiting for assistance in clearing the debris so they can continue
00:32 the recovery journey.
00:34 Groups of volunteers are walking along the street, helping to move items and sweep out
00:38 mud where possible.
00:40 Christmas plans may certainly now be up in the air, but most here are grateful for the
00:44 help of friends, family and strangers.
00:46 I've got to say my sister and great friend and daughter that came yesterday just mopping
00:52 it out, it was so helpful, so amazing.
00:56 All these hands make it so much easier.
00:59 Queensland's Premier Stephen Miles visited the northern suburbs of Cairns today to survey
01:03 the damage.
01:04 The Prime Minister is expected later in the week.
01:07 And while access to most suburbs has been restored, there are still some pockets in
01:12 the north that are relying on boats to get in and out.
