The New South Wales Greens are calling for the state's police watchdog to investigate the conduct of officers at last night's protest against the Israeli president's visit. Premier Chris Minns says the actions were 'proportionate'. Police say they had to take action when a group of protesters tried to march from Town Hall to state parliament despite court ordered restrictions. A number of videos have been posted to social media showing violent scuffles.

00:00I think it's important that people not judge the actions of police on 10 seconds or 15
00:07seconds social media clips. That's not fair to the police's relationship with the protest
00:13organisers, the 100 protests that they've successfully and peacefully managed in Sydney's
00:19CBD going back a long period of time. And it doesn't take into consideration the immediate
00:25situation prior to that confrontation. And I think that when you see the full context,
00:31many people will draw the opposite conclusion.
00:33Can I say police were confronted by an angry and aggressive group of protesters.
00:38We had to move them forward. You are talking about a very short piece of footage.
00:42As the Commissioner, I'm committed to making sure that we review the actions of police.
00:46But can I say I am proud of what they did last night in holding the line.
00:50As the Premier has said, as I have said, we are there to balance the right to community
00:56safety against free speech.
