Forecasters have revealed there is a small chance of snow come the festive period, but with temperatures definitely thought to stay on the low side, what is the Government’s new cash payment scheme and how is it set to help people amid the cold weather?

00:00 As temperatures continue to drop across the country, the government's cold weather payment
00:05 scheme will see people in over 309 areas across England and Wales receive a cash payment.
00:11 This scheme opened in November this year and will run until March 2024. It will see a payout
00:16 of £25 provided to people when temperatures drop below zero degrees for seven days. The
00:22 money will be paid automatically by the Department for Work and Pensions and to be eligible for
00:26 the payment, you will need to be claiming one of several benefits which include pension
00:31 credit, income support, Jobseeker's Allowance or Universal Credit.
00:37 Cold weather payments are set to be paid to those in Yorkshire, Cumbria and the north-east
00:41 of England and whilst the full list of postcodes is yet to be released, MPs have advised that
00:46 you can check whether your postcode is due a payment on the government website.
