With the title Disposing of The Body, it sounds like a thriller but really isn't, says Alan Copsey who is directing the play for the Funtington Players.

Good morning, my name is Phil here at Group Arts Editor at Sussex Newspapers. Lovely to
00:05
speak to Alan Copsey this morning. Now Alan, you are directing the next piece for the Funtington
00:11
Players, Hugh Whitemore's Disposing of the Body, and that's a misleading title in some
00:17
ways. We're not talking thriller, are we?
00:19
No, that's right. I mean, it's not as the title suggests. It's not whodunit. I mean,
00:27
it's quite a good title to draw people into the theatre, I think, but that's not what
00:33
it is. It's an intriguing play and we'll send the audience home at the end of the play with
00:39
a big...
00:40
It's more of a drama, is it then? It's about relationships.
00:43
It's a serious drama about human relationships and human frailties.
00:47
And I know you mustn't give too much away, and I wouldn't want you to, but just set the
00:52
scene then.
00:53
Well, it's about a couple who retire in their probably late 50s from London to the country
01:02
and they become involved with their next door neighbours. The woman next door volunteers
01:10
to act as a secretary for the man and they subsequently get involved in a fairly heated
01:19
affair of their...
01:20
Dot, dot, dot. It sounds good.
01:23
Absolutely. And that causes all kinds of issues and problems, including thinking about
01:32
the body.
01:33
And I shan't ask you whose body. But Hugh Whitemore is an interesting playwright, isn't
01:40
he?
01:41
He is indeed. I mean, he's best known for writing probably Pack of Lies and Breaking
01:47
the Code, both good plays which in fact made into films in the past. And he's also well
01:55
known for screenwriting. He wrote Gathering Storm, I think, '84, Charing Cross Road.
02:06
Oh, yeah. And it's lovely that you have this next instalment for the players because you
02:11
are one of the groups that have come back really well post-pandemic. I think you and
02:15
I can both think of groups that haven't re-emerged, but Huntington Players have done and have
02:20
done well, haven't you?
02:21
Yeah, I think we owe that to the fact that we have a very strong support. We always sell
02:27
well and hopefully put on interesting plays.
02:31
Brilliant. Well, lovely to speak to you. Thanks for your time and good luck with the play.
02:36
Thank you.
02:37
Yeah, very thanks, Phil.
