Desell Josiah Austin has succeeded Kwasi Robinson to become the new Chairman of the Tunapuna Piarco Regional Corporation.


On Wednesday, the swearing-in ceremony for the new councillors, aldermen, Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Corporation took place at St. Mary's Parish Hall in Tacarigua.

00:00 Councilor for Mokoyatrin City, Decel Josiah Austin, was nominated by the new
00:05 members of council of the Tunupunopiako Regional Corporation for the
00:09 position of chairman and then voted in by a show of hands without any objection.
00:13 In his inaugural speech, Austin said he is grateful to God for the opportunity
00:18 and he praised the leadership of his political party, the People's National
00:22 Movement. Austin stated that during the campaigning for the 2023 local
00:27 government elections, he heard several concerns. I stand ready to hit the
00:31 ground running, to engage, to share ideas and make interventions where necessary.
00:37 He highlighted plans to complete the Mokoya food market, strengthen business
00:41 relationships and enhance community related activities among other ventures.
00:46 We will deliver much upgrades to the municipal police post. We will find more
00:53 innovative and creative ways to continue increasing our revenue. As a matter of
00:58 fact, this team is going to be a transformational team. Austin said he and
01:03 his team have already began putting strategies in place in keeping with
01:07 local government reform. Kwesi Robinson, who is now the former TPRC chairman,
01:13 expressed full confidence in Austin in his farewell address. He said during his
01:18 tenure, service to community was his cornerstone. My focus was resolute, grounded
01:25 in the idea of serving the man on the ground. The Tunapuna market, a vital hub
01:34 of our community, was transformed into a symbol of accessibility and opportunity.
01:41 15 out of the 16 elected councillors under the TPRC took their oath of
01:46 office as one council was absent. The United National Congress has five
01:50 councillors while the remainder is for the PNM. Four older men were also
01:55 appointed. They are Diane M. Bishop, Clayton Blackman, Cheryl Ann Pamphill and
02:00 Leon Roach. Blackman has been selected by Austin and voted in by council as the
02:06 new vice chairman of the TPRC. The council would sit for the term 2023 to
02:11 2027, a four-year period, in keeping with the legislative amendments to the
