00:06:41 - And welcome back everyone.
00:06:42 So as we head into Independence Day celebrations tomorrow,
00:06:46 we are now joined online this morning with Nalini Diyal,
00:06:50 President of the Fireworks Sufferers Association.
00:06:53 And we are going to be speaking about the impact
00:06:55 of fireworks and the explosions that we do have
00:07:00 for independence every year.
00:07:03 Ms. Diyal, good morning and thank you very much
00:07:04 for joining us today.
00:07:06 - Thank you very much too.
00:07:08 - Yeah. - Good morning.
00:07:09 - Well, Ms. Diyal, let's deal with the issue head on.
00:07:11 We are going to be celebrating our 61st anniversary
00:07:16 of independence tomorrow.
00:07:18 And with that, every year for independence
00:07:22 comes with explosions, fireworks.
00:07:25 What are your concerns this year, ma'am?
00:07:27 - Well, our concern, and we represent all the people
00:07:32 and the animals too who suffer because of the fireworks.
00:07:37 Every year, we come back again with the same discussion
00:07:42 about one, the noise and disturbance of peace
00:07:47 and also the harm, harm to people, harm to animals,
00:07:52 harm to environment that the fireworks causes.
00:07:56 And every year, it's the same discussion.
00:07:59 - Let's talk about the impact that it has had
00:08:01 on the community.
00:08:02 How is this affecting people in the community?
00:08:05 How is this affecting animals?
00:08:08 And I suspect other people and things
00:08:12 are being affected also.
00:08:13 - Okay, well, it affects...
00:08:17 At first, we would talk about how it affects the animals.
00:08:22 - Yes.
00:08:23 - And now we have gone past that
00:08:25 because it seems no government,
00:08:28 not only this one, any government before
00:08:31 doesn't really care about the harm to animals.
00:08:35 So we are stressing now on the harm to people, human beings.
00:08:39 And it affects the elderly, the children,
00:08:43 they are traumatized.
00:08:45 It affects even children who have autism
00:08:49 and all these things.
00:08:50 So we are looking at it from a human side now.
00:08:54 And you are supposed to care about people
00:08:56 and how it affects their health and so on.
00:08:59 And yet to this day,
00:09:02 our last consultation was last year, August.
00:09:06 So you are looking at a year and no word yet
00:09:10 from the government.
00:09:12 We had a meeting with the representatives
00:09:14 from the AG's office and not a word, no notice,
00:09:19 nothing in print or anything as to what they have decided
00:09:25 about the new draft that they want to bring to the bill,
00:09:30 the FIWLS bill.
00:09:31 - But you know, Ms. Diyal, when you sit down
00:09:34 with let's say members of the government
00:09:37 or members of the ministry who are responsible for this
00:09:40 and you lay out your concerns to them,
00:09:43 what is the response?
00:09:46 - The response is terrible.
00:09:49 Just yesterday I was talking to another activist
00:09:53 and the response actually,
00:09:56 the response coming from the minister,
00:09:59 one of the ministers in the Ministry of Legal Affairs,
00:10:02 Ms. Ranuka Sagram Singh.
00:10:05 Her response is that FIWLS is a part of our culture.
00:10:09 Imagine that.
00:10:10 So with that sort of logic,
00:10:14 I don't know if they are encouraging a lawless behavior
00:10:19 as part of our culture,
00:10:21 because all the people who engage in FIWLS
00:10:23 are breaking the law.
00:10:26 So is lawlessness a part of our culture now?
00:10:29 And for her to make that point,
00:10:32 it's very, very careless and callous,
00:10:35 very silly too.
00:10:36 - Let's speak a little bit about the legislation,
00:10:43 because I was reading a little bit about it too.
00:10:46 And I think what stands out to me
00:10:50 is that while the government is saying,
00:10:53 look, something has to be done about the situation,
00:10:57 but I think that there are troubling parts
00:10:59 of the legislation when it comes to the use of the fireworks.
00:11:04 And I'm seeing that, if I remember well,
00:11:08 these, in some cases,
00:11:11 permission is going to have to be given,
00:11:14 licenses are going to have to be granted.
00:11:16 However, on public holidays,
00:11:20 I don't think that that is what happens.
00:11:24 So days such as Independence Day, Diwali,
00:11:28 Old Year's Night, until New Year's morning.
00:11:36 - Carnival, yeah.
00:11:38 All till Carnival, they do.
00:11:39 - So doesn't the legislation,
00:11:43 although it tries to deal with fireworks,
00:11:46 but some of the things that it is suggesting
00:11:50 really flies in the face of what it is trying to do.
00:11:55 - Exactly.
00:11:56 Now, the permit that they're talking about,
00:11:59 that is null and void,
00:12:01 'cause the summary of fences are states you do need.
00:12:05 All these people who buy fireworks and use it,
00:12:09 they are supposed to have a permit.
00:12:11 So that's already there.
00:12:13 So I don't know why they're bringing that into the equation.
00:12:16 And the problem is now they want it to be used
00:12:21 every public holiday.
00:12:24 So instead of reducing the distress and so on
00:12:29 that we are complaining about,
00:12:30 you want to increase it on us.
00:12:33 You want to make it worse.
00:12:34 So how is that logic?
00:12:37 How is that addressing our complaint?
00:12:40 It's worse.
00:12:43 And the problem, of course,
00:12:46 we always come back to enforcing the law.
00:12:50 There's a part in the draft,
00:12:52 they said that people will be ticketed.
00:12:55 Who's going to give them this ticket?
00:12:57 We come back again on the night of the celebration,
00:13:01 whichever celebration it is,
00:13:02 and people are setting off fireworks.
00:13:05 No police.
00:13:06 You can't even get the police to leave the station
00:13:10 to go to check.
00:13:12 And by the time they reach,
00:13:14 the people may have finished with the fireworks.
00:13:17 So who's going to get this ticket?
00:13:19 How are you going to enforce that part of the law?
00:13:22 I mean, all the stakeholders,
00:13:27 we had suggested at one time
00:13:31 to compromise noiseless fireworks.
00:13:35 But noiseless fireworks may be to us, to humans,
00:13:39 but it still is noiseless to the animals
00:13:42 and the birds and so on.
00:13:43 And so we suggested also
00:13:46 putting on a big public display out on a barge
00:13:50 out in the sea, like by the waterfront,
00:13:53 you know, and people who like to see the fireworks
00:13:56 and they could come and socialize and enjoy themselves.
00:14:00 They know it will be put on there at a time and all of that.
00:14:04 We were still willing to compromise on that.
00:14:07 But it is clear to us now, we are really fed up
00:14:10 because this is going on just about 19 years or so,
00:14:14 this discussion.
00:14:16 It is clear that the government doesn't care
00:14:19 and they are more concerned about the person or persons
00:14:24 selling the fireworks, importing the fireworks,
00:14:28 than about us citizens
00:14:31 who are distressed and traumatized by it.
00:14:34 - Let's talk a little bit about the impact
00:14:37 that it continues to have on animals.
00:14:39 I know that there's a concern up at the zoo,
00:14:42 but I also know, and we see evidence of this,
00:14:45 whenever there are events and explosives are used,
00:14:49 fireworks are used, usually the morning after.
00:14:52 We see dead animals all over the nation's
00:14:56 highways and byways.
00:14:59 So that is one part of it, the dead animals,
00:15:03 'cause they get very scared and they just run.
00:15:07 They run wild and they're crossing the road,
00:15:11 the highways and so on, and they run over.
00:15:14 And that, by the way, can cause a serious accident.
00:15:17 So humans will be involved in that.
00:15:20 But the other part of it is trauma to,
00:15:25 let's say an elderly person
00:15:27 who suffers with high blood pressure
00:15:29 or heart problems or something.
00:15:32 Somebody can get a heart attack.
00:15:33 I know as a pharmacist, I could tell you
00:15:36 the problems leading up before the celebration and after.
00:15:41 Customers, they have to come and buy pills,
00:15:46 anxiety pills, pills to sleep.
00:15:49 After, the day after, and after what's going on,
00:15:56 people suffering from stress,
00:15:59 they cannot sleep, they cannot eat.
00:16:02 Parents have children traumatized, autistic children.
00:16:06 They are uncontrollable.
00:16:10 It is really, really a very, very deleterious effect
00:16:15 on people's health.
00:16:16 - So then what's the next step?
00:16:17 You have said that this discussion,
00:16:20 these discussions have been going on for the past 19 years
00:16:24 and there has been really no resolution to it.
00:16:26 I know that also there is a great concern
00:16:29 among the elderly these days about noise pollution.
00:16:33 So then, as I said, what's the next step?
00:16:35 - Well, we were really hoping that by now,
00:16:39 as I told you, the last meeting was August last year,
00:16:42 a year has passed, nothing coming from the AG's office.
00:16:47 And I really, you know, sometimes I wonder about us,
00:16:53 if we are progressing or if we are going backward.
00:16:55 Because you would think the government
00:16:59 and those in authority would want to encourage people
00:17:03 to respect other people, you know,
00:17:06 to be more caring, compassionate.
00:17:09 But they are instead encouraging the opposite.
00:17:14 That's why we have so much crime in the country.
00:17:16 It's all related, you know, the behavior of people.
00:17:20 And if Minister Sagaram Singh thinks that fireworks
00:17:23 is part of our culture, well, I would want to say
00:17:26 that maybe crime now, murders and so on,
00:17:29 if you want to compare the both,
00:17:31 are part of our culture now too.
00:17:33 I don't know what the other stakeholders intend to do.
00:17:37 And I don't know if the AG's office
00:17:38 is gonna have another meeting with us.
00:17:41 I mean, tomorrow, it's late already,
00:17:45 they're gonna have the fireworks.
00:17:47 And the zoo, I want to mention the zoo here
00:17:50 because they lost, you know, one of the kangaroos,
00:17:53 the firework, and the person who represented them spoke very,
00:17:59 you know, she spoke very harshly
00:18:03 about the other animals that affected,
00:18:06 the birds and so on.
00:18:08 And I would think the zoo would be very,
00:18:12 you know, persistent in this matter.
00:18:16 Because every year, the display is right there by the zoo.
00:18:20 What is the zoo doing about it?
00:18:23 We don't have much say in it
00:18:25 unless we go out there and protest or something,
00:18:27 which by the way, we have been protesting,
00:18:30 I was checking it almost 13 years, you know,
00:18:32 every year we protest, except during COVID,
00:18:35 we didn't have any protest.
00:18:37 And it seems even that isn't doing anything,
00:18:39 it's all old talk, you know, old talk.
00:18:43 - So then really, the citizenry at this time, as we speak,
00:18:48 they really don't have any new options available to them.
00:18:54 - No options and Diwali is coming.
00:18:57 It really starts from Diwali, yeah?
00:19:00 Diwali and straight on until all year.
00:19:04 And the problem is that the sale is so prevalent,
00:19:07 it's all over, you can buy it, you can keep it,
00:19:11 you can set it off anytime, any day,
00:19:13 doesn't even have to be all year, it's not Diwali, yeah?
00:19:15 People are very wicked
00:19:17 and they don't care about their neighbors or anybody.
00:19:21 They do it for fun and they are enjoying it,
00:19:23 but at whose expense?
00:19:25 And we had the recent, well, maybe two years ago
00:19:29 when the house is burned down in Laventille or somewhere.
00:19:34 Yeah, Fort Spain.
00:19:36 So many people lost their houses and belongings
00:19:39 and I don't know how we don't have a loss of life yet.
00:19:42 I'm not saying that's what we need,
00:19:46 but I just hope we don't reach to that point.
00:19:48 - Yeah, Ms. Diyal, anything else you'd like to share
00:19:51 with us before you leave us this morning?

00:23:27 - And welcome back everyone.
00:23:30 So we do have a lot for you still on the program today,
00:23:35 but let's speak a little bit about some of the things
00:23:38 that are happening in the newspaper now.
00:23:41 So celebrations go to next level,
00:23:43 big pump and pageantry at Savannah tomorrow.
00:23:47 Trinidad and Tobago is known
00:23:49 for its vibrant cultural celebrations
00:23:51 and displays so for Independence Day tomorrow.
00:23:54 Expect the pump and ceremony to be as Trini youths would say,
00:23:58 next level.
00:24:00 TNT will celebrate its 61st anniversary of independence
00:24:03 and from morning to night,
00:24:05 spectators and patriots alike
00:24:07 can expect a full day of activities.
00:24:10 Citizens as well as tourists will gather in Port of Spain,
00:24:14 the hub of Independence Day celebrations
00:24:16 to experience the annual military parade in the morning
00:24:19 and the fireworks display in the evening.
00:24:22 From as early as 6 a.m. on Independence Day,
00:24:25 crowds are expected to start arriving
00:24:27 at the Queen's Park Savannah Port of Spain
00:24:29 to enjoy the invitation only ceremonial events
00:24:31 from the grandstand while spectators without invitations
00:24:35 can view the parade from the bleachers
00:24:38 at the Queen's Park Savannah.
00:24:41 All right, so we are going to be talking
00:24:43 about World Steel Pan Day
00:24:46 and Independence Day celebrations
00:24:49 and we do have on the line at this time,
00:24:52 we have Cindy Ann Currency,
00:24:55 head of project at Digicel.
00:24:58 Ms. Currency, good morning.
00:25:00 - Hi, good morning, good morning.
00:25:01 How are you?
00:25:02 Happy Independence Day.
00:25:03 - And happy Independence Day to you too.
00:25:05 So tell us what's in store?
00:25:07 What do you all have planned for us for tomorrow?
00:25:10 - Well, let me tell you first about World Independence Day
00:25:13 'cause my colleague Colin,
00:25:15 he'll talk about what's happening tomorrow
00:25:17 and the investment that Digicel has made
00:25:20 to push the culture forward.
00:25:22 So the Digicel Foundation, we partnered with Pantrin Bego
00:25:25 and a couple of weeks ago announced
00:25:27 that we are giving out grants for five steel bands
00:25:31 to transform their spaces into tech spaces.
00:25:33 This kind of came from last year,
00:25:37 we partnered with another steel band in Tobago
00:25:40 and they had a phenomenal program
00:25:43 in terms of their youth engagement.
00:25:44 We saw their enthusiasm,
00:25:45 we saw their passion to really work with their community
00:25:49 and we saw that project really flourish
00:25:51 and figured that this would be a nice space for us
00:25:53 to just try to invest in another year.
00:25:55 And so we reached out to Pantrin Bego earlier this year,
00:25:58 like in January or February to find out,
00:26:00 how many steel bands are there
00:26:02 and maybe we can do something together
00:26:04 and that's where this idea is.
00:26:06 And so we issued a call for applications
00:26:09 for interested bands that have the space of course
00:26:13 and they must have a youth program
00:26:14 to access funding from the Digicel Foundation
00:26:18 so that we can develop tech spaces,
00:26:20 tech computer labs in the Pant spaces.
00:26:23 So while they have their young people there,
00:26:25 learning Pant, whether it's,
00:26:26 I mean, I know that they do these things throughout the year
00:26:29 and not just a carnival season,
00:26:31 they have them there in a space
00:26:32 where they can access the internet,
00:26:34 they can use computer with supervision,
00:26:36 they can read music,
00:26:37 they can do whatever they need to do
00:26:38 to really build a holistic young person.
00:26:42 And so that's where our call is.
00:26:44 So we launched a call on Wheels Tech Band Day
00:26:46 and it ends, it was meant to end tomorrow for independence,
00:26:50 but you know, it's independence day,
00:26:52 everybody should celebrate.
00:26:53 So we've decided to extend it for an additional week
00:26:56 and so it will end next Sunday at midnight.
00:27:00 We are giving applicants more time
00:27:02 to send through their applications,
00:27:03 you know, to get their ideas together,
00:27:05 to make sure they have the resources in place as well.
00:27:08 Right, we don't want to just put computers in a space
00:27:11 that's not going to be used
00:27:13 or give computers to a band that doesn't have a space.
00:27:15 You know, all of those boxes have to be checked as well.
00:27:19 So we're really, really excited.
00:27:21 It was a big deal for us
00:27:23 and then the Wheels Team Band Day was announced
00:27:25 and that was even, you know,
00:27:27 it was really great for us to have that kind of partnership
00:27:30 with Fancham Bego and focus on our national instruments
00:27:33 in this significant way.
00:27:34 - How has the response been thus far
00:27:36 and how has the impact been?
00:27:38 - Oh, well, so far the response has been great.
00:27:41 I'm seeing a lot of engagement on our social media
00:27:43 'cause it's an online application.
00:27:44 People asking questions, people sending emails.
00:27:47 Just to tidy some things up,
00:27:48 we've even been able to reach out to the band in Tobago.
00:27:51 It's called the Tobago Panthers,
00:27:53 for them to send some encouragement, you know,
00:27:55 via social media for their colleagues
00:27:57 in terms of why it's important,
00:27:58 how it started in their community,
00:28:00 what are some of the things that they put in place
00:28:02 and then to show what the impact has been
00:28:04 on their young people.
00:28:05 And one of the key things that Brian Thomas said,
00:28:08 who's the president of Tobago Panthers,
00:28:10 is that sometimes you just get the young people
00:28:12 coming to play games, right?
00:28:14 He said that online they're playing games,
00:28:15 they're not hurting anybody, but they're in a safe space.
00:28:18 He said, but that is really how they started capturing them.
00:28:21 When they start to stay in all the listening
00:28:23 to the pan practice going on downstairs
00:28:24 or they're hearing other colleagues talking
00:28:26 about what happened last night at pan practice.
00:28:28 And so they started to become a bit more interested.
00:28:31 They have a youth program that they developed
00:28:33 that they got support with through the division
00:28:35 of community and youth, community and youth at the THA.
00:28:39 So they have a youth officer working with them
00:28:41 and then they have their volunteers.
00:28:42 So, I mean, this is the kind of impact
00:28:46 and the response that we want.
00:28:48 So right now we have about, we have over 50 applications.
00:28:51 We do want a bit more, we want to give them as many,
00:28:54 as many chances as possible to send in.
00:28:57 We will be selecting four, Panthers and Big
00:29:00 will also selected four.
00:29:01 So there'll be eight pieces that we'll be outfitting
00:29:06 and sponsoring.
00:29:07 So that's about a half a million TT dollars
00:29:09 that we've invested.
00:29:10 So the four that was selected by Panthers and Big
00:29:12 are Katzen Dramas, Curap Joylanders, Harlem Syncopators.
00:29:17 Oh, I see, Harlem Syncopators.
00:29:22 And then the Curap Sherzando.
00:29:24 I think I pronounced that correctly.
00:29:26 - Yeah, you did.
00:29:27 - We're looking for four more spaces to partner
00:29:30 with this year.
00:29:31 And we really giving them an independence gift
00:29:34 by extending the fund additional,
00:29:36 we need to give them some more time
00:29:37 to get some key things together for us.
00:29:39 - Yeah, so is the, so there's still time for persons to,
00:29:43 when I say persons, bands, teal bands to register for this?
00:29:48 - Yes, there is time to register.
00:29:50 We want them to visit our social media pages
00:29:53 where Digicel Foundation TT on Instagram and on Facebook.
00:29:57 There's an online link in both bios
00:29:59 as well as on the pages for you to go in.
00:30:01 It's a very simple application form.
00:30:03 We are looking for bands that of course
00:30:05 have the youth presence.
00:30:06 We want to know that you have a space
00:30:08 that we can transform into a tech center,
00:30:10 into what we call our technology and education centers.
00:30:14 And we want to know that you have a program.
00:30:16 So really good at it.
00:30:17 Don't just put computers there
00:30:18 and expect things to evolve, right?
00:30:20 We want to know that, you know,
00:30:21 they're volunteers, they're supervision,
00:30:23 that you have an idea.
00:30:24 Because what we want ultimately is to allow this
00:30:28 to change the trajectory of the young people
00:30:30 that use these spaces, that come to Pan Yat.
00:30:33 That's already a safe space.
00:30:35 You know, we want to be able to really play
00:30:37 a more important and a deeper role into their education
00:30:40 and to their holistic development.
00:30:42 - Yeah. Let's bring in Colin Graves.
00:30:45 Colin, good morning.
00:30:46 - Good morning, good morning.
00:30:49 - Yeah. Colin. All right.
00:30:51 All right. So we do have Colin there.
00:30:52 Colin, what do you have planned for us for tomorrow?
00:30:55 - Tomorrow? So tomorrow is independent.
00:30:59 I mean, you know, Digicel has had a very long,
00:31:03 and when I mean long, it's 17 years of, you know,
00:31:06 being a part of the things people are passionate about.
00:31:09 And, you know, being independent,
00:31:11 Republic Day, national holidays and stuff.
00:31:13 You know, we always make sure
00:31:15 and be a part of the national celebration.
00:31:17 So in the past, we've sponsored, of course,
00:31:20 elements of the various cultural activities
00:31:23 on the day of independence.
00:31:25 And, you know, tomorrow is no different.
00:31:27 So actually from tonight,
00:31:30 the Digicel team will be celebrating the end
00:31:33 or the culmination of the Steel Pan Month activities
00:31:37 at the BP Renegades, the National Pan Am Champions.
00:31:40 So there's their independent represent event,
00:31:43 their FET, that features, of course,
00:31:46 the BP Renegades National Pan Am Champions,
00:31:48 you know, local rhythm section,
00:31:50 Destra Garcia and her band,
00:31:52 you know, artists like Iowa George,
00:31:54 Irvin Alves and stuff like that.
00:31:56 So we will be out and about.
00:31:58 And similarly, you know, we've actually,
00:32:00 from this weekend at the recently concluded
00:32:04 Pan Am Avenue event,
00:32:06 we would have also had presence there
00:32:08 providing, you know, streaming services,
00:32:10 high-powered Wi-Fi internet connectivity,
00:32:14 you know, working with some of the bands at Sydney.
00:32:15 I just mentioned who also part of the parade on Saturday.
00:32:19 So tonight, you know, people can look out
00:32:21 for the Digicel Wuko Jumbies.
00:32:23 We have Digicel Rhythm Section.
00:32:25 We have a photo booth.
00:32:27 Of course, using digital technology
00:32:29 and bringing it closer to the field plan lovers.
00:32:33 So within the plan yard spaces,
00:32:34 they're going to have those instant IG,
00:32:38 Instagram rolling cams.
00:32:40 We're gonna have our Digicel brand ambassadors.
00:32:42 We're gonna also have one of those 360 cams.
00:32:46 So, you know, some very experiential and very fun things.
00:32:49 We'll be doing giveaways and stuff like that.
00:32:51 And of course, tomorrow we also plan on being part of
00:32:53 a couple of the pop-up events that happen
00:32:56 around the country as people celebrate.
00:32:58 'Cause the thing is, you know,
00:32:59 for independence after the parade in the morning,
00:33:02 there are so many pop-up and nice fringe things
00:33:05 that happen in small spaces.
00:33:07 So it's not just about big concerts
00:33:08 like Renegade and Represent or Panhandle Avenue,
00:33:11 but it's also just about small family gatherings
00:33:13 that we've seen along the parade route year after year.
00:33:17 Gatherings that after the parade pass,
00:33:18 you will also see families under these 10 by 10 pitch tents
00:33:23 having fun, celebrating at the different parties.
00:33:26 So we're gonna be out and about for the,
00:33:29 starting tonight, ushering the independence holiday
00:33:32 and just being a part of all the things.
00:33:34 So look out for us.
00:33:36 - And all of this is free, right, Colin?
00:33:38 - Yeah, well, no, the tonight's event at the Renegade,
00:33:41 the small admission, it's 250.
00:33:44 Of course, we would have known that Panhandle Avenue
00:33:45 is free, we'd know that the parade tomorrow
00:33:48 and the activities out there are free as well.
00:33:50 But what we try to do is we really look at
00:33:52 how we could have supported bands that reached out to us
00:33:56 and how we could be a part of all of these different
00:34:00 market segments within the Steel Band fraternity.
00:34:03 So it's not just the free events,
00:34:05 it's not just the events that appeal to the older audiences,
00:34:08 but it's also a nice cross section.
00:34:10 So we have some youth oriented things in there as well.
00:34:13 So it's a mix of free and paid events.
00:34:16 - All right, I nearly gave that to everyone freely.
00:34:21 Cindy-Anne, let me bring you back in here.
00:34:26 Is there anything else you'd like to give us
00:34:28 before you leave us this morning?
00:34:31 - Yes, of course.
00:34:32 I actually wanted to mention to our viewers
00:34:35 that this is the end of the July, August vacation, right?
00:34:38 I mean, it's a big celebration.
00:34:39 I don't know if people ever really notice
00:34:41 that we do a big bang and then we go back out
00:34:44 to work, to school.
00:34:46 And so for the end of July vacation,
00:34:48 we really tried to support as many youth oriented
00:34:51 initiatives in Trinidad and Tobago as we could possibly
00:34:55 have at the Digital Foundation.
00:34:57 And so just some of the things I wanted to mention
00:35:00 was we partnered with RSC, Restore a Sense of ICANN.
00:35:04 It's an NGO and they did an incubator,
00:35:08 a digital incubator for children who are interested
00:35:11 in all things new technology.
00:35:12 So from robotics to green screen,
00:35:15 to learning how to do repairs, to drones, everything.
00:35:18 And that's still going on.
00:35:19 That still has another two weeks
00:35:21 into the second week of September, right?
00:35:23 So we'll be posting more about these things,
00:35:25 about these camps.
00:35:26 Initially it was meant to service just 1000 children
00:35:30 and they had over 1300 and even 300 more were registered late.
00:35:34 So there is the demand for things like this
00:35:36 and we're really happy to come on board to do that
00:35:38 for the July, August vacation.
00:35:40 And then we also, I mean, book drives,
00:35:42 we see parents talking about it, the expense.
00:35:45 It's a new school, yeah.
00:35:47 Some people have more than one child,
00:35:49 starting a new school terms.
00:35:50 And so we donated $20,000 to two of our homes,
00:35:55 our orphanages, and then another $10,000
00:35:58 went into purchasing devices for another.
00:36:01 And we got our staff involved in that as well
00:36:03 in terms of this drive to go and give back
00:36:05 because we understand that there is a need
00:36:08 and we're trying our best to meet it.
00:36:09 And so this is just a call for corporates out there.
00:36:12 We still have a few more days for Java to end.
00:36:15 Come out and see how you can support
00:36:16 whether it's a family, whether it's a home,
00:36:18 whether it's a school, and there's so much need out there.
00:36:21 You know, we really wanna give our children
00:36:23 the best that they can get,
00:36:25 especially after we celebrate, you know,
00:36:26 another year of independence and turn around to people.
00:36:29 - Yeah, Cyndianne, it's always good speaking to you
00:36:31 and Colin, it's good to see you this morning.
00:36:33 Up and about, very early.
00:36:36 - Right before my camera cut off.
00:36:38 - Yes.
00:36:39 (laughing)
00:36:40 - Right before my community just went blank.
00:36:43 - So happy independence to both of you
00:36:44 and I'm sure that we'll speak sometime
00:36:46 very soon in the future.
00:36:47 Bye for now.
00:36:48 - Thank you, goodbye.
00:36:49 Happy independence. - Bye bye.
00:36:50 - All right, so it's time for another break,
00:36:52 but we do have this image for you
00:36:54 of the National Birthday Scholar Tybis.
00:36:56 We're coming back.

00:37:27 - Research has shown that playing with LEGO
00:37:29 helps children develop spatial skills
00:37:31 for STEM-related tasks.
00:37:32 (children cheering)
00:37:35 - We firmly believe that initiatives
00:37:36 like the First LEGO League are instrumental
00:37:39 in nurturing young talent

00:39:54 Gentlemen, thank you very much for coming this morning.
00:39:56 - Thanks for having us.
00:39:57 - Yeah, and let me tell you, when I saw Trini,
00:40:00 you know we have a Trini here, good morning Trini.
00:40:02 Yeah, Californian Trini.
00:40:04 So David, let's begin with you.
00:40:07 I know that you're here to speak about
00:40:08 the Continuing Promise mission.
00:40:11 Let's speak about that.
00:40:12 - Yeah, so Continuing Promise 23
00:40:14 is part of the United States Enduring Promise to the region.
00:40:17 It's an initiative that was started
00:40:19 by United States Southern Command
00:40:21 in conjunction with United States Embassy
00:40:23 that will bring the United States Navy ship Burlington
00:40:26 to the shores of Trinidad this weekend.
00:40:29 The ship will be here from the 2nd to the 10th.
00:40:31 And while it's here, personnel from the ship
00:40:33 will be engaged in several community engagements
00:40:36 across the country.
00:40:37 So very exciting time for the United States,
00:40:40 very exciting time for Trinidad and Tobago.
00:40:42 Continuing Promise, it does other things too.
00:40:45 It builds the medical capability of countries.
00:40:50 It also promotes peace, stability,
00:40:53 and prosperity in the region.
00:40:56 And it also builds the capacity
00:40:58 so Trinidad and Tobago and the United States
00:41:00 could better respond to disasters
00:41:02 and humanitarian crisis in the region.
00:41:04 So for me personally, being Trini-born,
00:41:07 very excited to be here to represent the United States.
00:41:09 I am honored, very honored to be here.
00:41:11 - Yeah, and thank you very much for being here.
00:41:13 Commander, let's bring you in here
00:41:16 and let's just build on what Mr. Green has said
00:41:19 about this partnership between Trinidad and Tobago
00:41:22 and the United States.
00:41:23 - Sure, yeah, so as Trini mentioned,
00:41:25 the mission itself is built and designed
00:41:27 to strengthen partnerships,
00:41:28 but it also focuses on increasing medical readiness
00:41:32 and building out resiliency to face natural disasters.
00:41:35 So in the mission here in Trinidad,
00:41:37 we'll have US Navy medical providers working side by side
00:41:41 with their Trinamogonian counterparts.
00:41:43 And we'll also have US Navy CBs that are engineers
00:41:47 working with Trinidad and Tobago Defense Force engineers
00:41:49 on small scale construction projects.
00:41:52 We'll also be doing symposiums
00:41:54 on building disaster relief resiliency,
00:41:57 as well as gender-based violence.
00:41:59 And veterinarians are also on board.
00:42:02 And last but not least,
00:42:03 we do have a US Navy band component to it,
00:42:05 just a nine person band that will be here to play
00:42:08 with their TTDF, TTPS counterparts
00:42:11 in various concerts throughout Trinidad.
00:42:14 - And of course, Mr. Green, this is not the first time
00:42:15 that such an initiative is being held.
00:42:18 - Yeah, so this is actually the 13th time
00:42:20 that Continuing Promise has visited the region,
00:42:23 but it's gonna be the first time
00:42:24 for United States Navy Ship Burlington.
00:42:26 This trip here is a 57 day mission
00:42:29 that started in Panama, it went and then Columbia.
00:42:32 And once it gets to Trinidad and it leave Trinidad,
00:42:34 she will sail to Grenada,
00:42:36 which will be the last stop for Continuing Promise 23.
00:42:38 - Yeah, and when does the vessel arrive in Trinidad?
00:42:43 - The vessel will arrive on 2 September.
00:42:45 It will conduct its mission from 4 to 8 September,
00:42:48 and then it will depart on 10 September.
00:42:50 - And members of the public,
00:42:52 would they be able to tour the ship?
00:42:54 - So the ship is unfortunately not open to the public
00:42:57 for tours because most of the crew will be out
00:43:00 in the short period of time engaging
00:43:01 and doing various activities.
00:43:04 However, there are a couple of engagements
00:43:05 that are open to the public.
00:43:07 The US Navy Band will be performing
00:43:09 at the C3 Center Courtyard in San Fernando
00:43:13 on the 4th of September at 7pm, that's open to the public.
00:43:16 And there's also a concert on 8 September
00:43:19 in the Hadco Phase 2 Pan Groove Pan Yard
00:43:22 that is also open to the public.
00:43:24 That starts at 7pm on the 8th.
00:43:25 - Yeah, are there any activities being planned for Tobago?
00:43:29 - Yeah, so we have not forgotten about Tobago.

00:43:39 on behalf of United States Southern Command

00:43:49 we donated in 2021 to Trinidad.
00:43:51 And that field hospital will be also deployed
00:43:53 and displayed during Continuing Promise 23.
00:43:57 - Yeah, let's speak a little bit about the impact
00:44:00 that initiatives such as these,
00:44:03 and I know that in our initial discussion,
00:44:07 you all did touch on it, but let's speak a little bit
00:44:10 and really get into the nitty gritty of it
00:44:13 as to the impact that initiatives such as these
00:44:19 have on Trinidad and Tobago and small countries
00:44:24 or smaller countries of the Caribbean.
00:44:27 - So Trinidad and Tobago and the United States
00:44:31 has a strong partnership and Continuing Promise
00:44:33 is part of that strong partnership.
00:44:35 So some of the things that we do in the region,
00:44:38 such as Continuing Promise, it helps build the capacity
00:44:43 of these nations, not just to respond to disasters,
00:44:46 but also to increase their medical readiness.
00:44:48 So that's why we are here in Trinidad
00:44:51 and that's why we're gonna go to Grenada,
00:44:52 some of the smaller islands.
00:44:54 We've done this, like I said, 13 times before.
00:44:57 The last time we were in Trinidad, I believe was in 2019.
00:45:00 And that time the ship was in the southern part
00:45:02 of Trinidad in Laboree.
00:45:04 So it was time to come back to Trinidad
00:45:06 to show our promise to Trinidad and to continue
00:45:08 to build their capacity to respond to disasters.
00:45:11 - Yeah, and when we speak about disaster management,
00:45:14 of course, disasters come in many forms, Commander.
00:45:18 I mean, we have seen what happened in Maui
00:45:22 over the past few weeks, devastating situation there.
00:45:27 So I mean, in countries such as us in the Caribbean,
00:45:33 we have problems with the weather every year,
00:45:37 with hurricanes, with flooding.
00:45:40 So is it that the program is molded and fashioned
00:45:45 in a way to help countries
00:45:50 because of what their demands are?
00:45:52 - Yeah, sure.
00:45:54 We all face disasters as you've seen,
00:45:56 and we also have a hurricane now touching down in Florida.
00:45:59 So we're all prone to it.
00:46:01 It's a whole government approach that we take.
00:46:04 And we believe that if we build resiliency as a region
00:46:08 and build capacity, know how to work with one another,
00:46:10 build interoperability, we'll be better prepared
00:46:13 to face these challenges, natural disasters, climate change.
00:46:17 - Yeah, and you feel, Mr. Green,
00:46:20 that because of initiatives again, such as these,
00:46:23 you feel that we in the Caribbean are better prepared
00:46:29 when natural disasters hit now
00:46:33 because of this training that people may have acquired
00:46:38 over the years, that we are better skilled to deal with it?
00:46:42 - Yes, we are.
00:46:42 I firmly believe we are.
00:46:44 'Cause when we do these things,
00:46:47 such as Continuing Promise 23,
00:46:49 we work directly and in partnership with ODPM,
00:46:53 Office of Disaster Preparedness Management.
00:46:55 We work with TEMA in Tobago.
00:46:57 So it's not just the United States saying,
00:47:00 we are coming to this country and doing this.
00:47:02 It's a collaboration with the embassy,
00:47:04 with the government of those countries.
00:47:06 So we find out exactly what their needs are
00:47:08 and we fulfill their needs as much as possible.
00:47:11 - Yeah, Commander, when we speak about medical engagements,
00:47:16 exactly what are we speaking about, the specifics of it?
00:47:20 - Sure, well, first of all, I'd like to thank our colleagues
00:47:23 in the Ministry of Health and Ministry of National Security.
00:47:25 They've been great partners.
00:47:26 We've been working with them
00:47:27 for quite some time on this engagement.
00:47:29 We will be, our doctors will be interfacing
00:47:32 with Trinidadian doctors in clinics,
00:47:35 more or less in Central Trinidad,
00:47:38 to help alleviate some of the backlogs of existing patients,
00:47:41 to work side by side, learn from one another,
00:47:44 exchange best practices,
00:47:45 and in that way, treat more patients.
00:47:48 - Yeah, when you say speak, when you say treat more patients,
00:47:53 is it that over the next few days,
00:47:56 locals can benefit?
00:47:58 - Yes, that's right, locals can benefit.
00:48:00 There are obviously pre-registered patients
00:48:03 that have a backlog.
00:48:04 - Yes. - And we'll be taking care
00:48:05 of a lot of those that are identified
00:48:07 from the Ministry of Health,
00:48:08 as well as it's open clinics.
00:48:10 So as people come in, if there's more capacity to treat,
00:48:13 we'll be able to see more people, emergency medical care.
00:48:16 - Yeah, Mr. Green, anything else you'd like to add?
00:48:18 - Yeah, I'd like to say that
00:48:20 when the Burlington departs here,
00:48:21 it doesn't mean that strong partnership is over.
00:48:24 It's gonna continue.
00:48:25 United States Southern Command will continue
00:48:27 to work closely with the United States Embassy
00:48:30 and the Trinidad and Tobago government,
00:48:32 and we will continue to build that capacity
00:48:34 for the foreseeable future.

00:54:10 about four years ago, somebody did die, you know, Maharan?
00:54:15 - Yeah, that was, I remember that.
00:54:18 - Maharan, them little kids and them had,
00:54:21 you know the firecracker they could shoot up like a rocket?
00:54:24 They shoot that on the fourth floor
00:54:28 and burn the whole building down.
00:54:30 And guess what?
00:54:31 On the fourth floor, had a guy in a wheelchair was handicapped.
00:54:35 Maharan fall through all the floors and dead.
00:54:38 - Yes.
00:54:39 - I see his mother, I see his mother,
00:54:40 now I see his mother in space
00:54:42 and they never investigate that.
00:54:44 - That was somewhere in Upper Port of Spain, right?
00:54:46 If I remember well, not so?
00:54:48 - On Top of Nelson Street.
00:54:50 - All right, good, yeah.
00:54:52 You remember very well.
00:54:53 I do remember it was a horrible incident.
00:54:56 - Yeah, if you pass there right now,
00:54:58 you're gonna see the building still.
00:54:59 - And today, and just imagine today,
00:55:03 we're still having a discussion about fireworks
00:55:05 and the dangers of fireworks.
00:55:08 And we're having a discussion about noise pollution
00:55:11 and so on.
00:55:12 So it's apparently as we always say in Trinidad and Tobago,
00:55:16 it's just a five day wonder.
00:55:18 And when you have victims,
00:55:20 you just move on to the other victims.
00:55:22 Yeah.

00:55:41 - Morning.
00:55:42 - Maharan.
00:55:44 - Yes.
00:55:45 - Right, so tell me something about the fireworks.

00:55:52 so that I can hear what the gentleman is saying?
00:55:55 Go ahead, sir.
00:55:56 - Maharan, it's concerning the fireworks.
00:55:59 Every year, there seems to be some kind of talk about it.
00:56:03 - Yes.
00:56:04 - But it's been done.
00:56:05 I know.
00:56:06 - Go ahead, sir, we're listening.

00:56:26 The amount of pepsi, Maharan,
00:56:27 when I drive on the road, I'm sure.
00:56:29 Lots of animals die during this time, Diwali,
00:56:34 independence, and we talk about it now,
00:56:37 the activists come out,
00:56:38 but sometimes I wonder what happens afterwards,
00:56:41 everybody, and now we want to do something
00:56:44 in a short space of time,
00:56:46 which we know is almost impossible, it will happen.
00:56:48 The animals die, and we're back to square one,
00:56:51 and next year we're gonna talk about it again,
00:56:53 and it's really unfortunate,
00:56:54 but I know legislation or something to control this thing,
00:56:59 and I don't know where we are,
00:56:59 I don't know if you can probably highlight it.
00:57:02 Thank you.
00:57:03 - All right, thank you very much.

00:57:53 Marlon and Colin from Central Trinidad,
00:57:56 this evening in Kelly Village,

00:58:18 former counselor Samuel Sankar,
00:58:21 Marlon Ferguson from the president
00:58:23 of the Scrap Dealers Association.

00:58:43 And hopefully the residents of Kelly Village have heard you

00:58:54 Kelly Village has,

00:59:17 - Now I used to mine dogs,
00:59:19 pit bulls and all kinds of dogs.
00:59:21 I used to mine.
00:59:22 But you see this celebration,
00:59:24 I'm not against the people for not wanting,
00:59:27 making the, having the animals kill and all,
00:59:30 because I used to go down and put my animals in a cage
00:59:33 and I sit down there with them
00:59:34 and I keep all of them quiet during that time,
00:59:37 especially in the night.
00:59:39 But these strayed animals that happened to get killed outside,
00:59:43 I don't know why the people or the owners
00:59:45 have them running wild outside,
00:59:47 especially at that occasion.
00:59:50 The people should put the dogs inside and take care of them
00:59:52 because it's only for one night, as I look at it.
00:59:55 And let the fireworks go on and everybody complaining
01:00:01 that they should stop it, stop it and stop it.
01:00:03 But take care of the animals as I did.
01:00:05 I used to, I put them in a cage and I hugged them up
01:00:08 and we stayed there for an hour and a half.
01:00:11 Because it gets worse,
01:00:12 looks like kind of Christmas time.
01:00:14 Christmas time, you know the amount of fireworks
01:00:17 it have in your village?
01:00:19 Like if it's Independence Day.
01:00:22 - I hear you, sir.
01:00:24 Thank you very much for your call this morning

01:04:00 Of course, tomorrow we are going to be celebrating
01:04:03 60 or 61st anniversary as an independent nation.
01:04:07 But we do have on the line this morning,
01:04:09 and I have been telling you about this very special guest.
01:04:12 We do have Mr. Winston Dukkaran.
01:04:14 Of course, he's a former minister of finance
01:04:16 and foreign affairs,
01:04:18 former professor and international public official.
01:04:21 He's also an author, economist.
01:04:24 Mr. Dukkaran, thank you very much
01:04:26 for joining us this morning.
01:04:27 - Thank you very much.
01:04:30 It's a pleasure to be here on this particular morning.
01:04:32 - Yes, it is.
01:04:34 Mr. Dukkaran, well, you have had a long history
01:04:38 with Trinidad and Tobago.
01:04:40 You have performed at a number of levels
01:04:45 for Trinidad and Tobago.
01:04:46 As we move into this and celebrate our 61st anniversary
01:04:51 as an independent nation, what are your impressions, sir?
01:04:56 - I think there is a lot that we must be very happy about.
01:05:02 And there's even more that we can achieve in the years ahead.
01:05:09 So at the 61st anniversary,
01:05:12 I look back at how I felt in 1962
01:05:17 as a young person then,
01:05:20 and there was a great amount of excitement in the air
01:05:24 as we embark on this road of nationhood,
01:05:28 as we embark on the road towards trying
01:05:30 to create our own destiny as a small nation
01:05:34 in the world of nations.
01:05:37 61 years later, I don't sense that there is
01:05:41 that excitement in the air,
01:05:43 and I sense that there is a feeling of disenchantment
01:05:48 around us, and perhaps we may need to address that
01:05:52 as we move forward.
01:05:54 - And as we speak about that lack of excitement
01:05:58 and disenchantment, Mr. Dukkaran,
01:06:01 what do you think is responsible for that?
01:06:03 What is fueling that?
01:06:06 - Well, that's a rather complex question.
01:06:09 A lot has changed since 1962.
01:06:12 The people have changed.
01:06:15 The concept of politics have changed.
01:06:18 The international environment in which we operate
01:06:21 is now a change.
01:06:23 And our own quest for development has changed.
01:06:27 In that scenario, there is now the need to reignite
01:06:35 a feeling that the future is a good one,
01:06:39 and the future is an attainable one,
01:06:41 and the future is one in which a leadership
01:06:44 can rise to the occasion.
01:06:46 And I think this is where we are now.
01:06:49 - Yeah.
01:06:50 So you do agree that leadership does have a lot to play
01:06:55 as it relates to, let's say, the development of a country
01:07:01 and how to motivate the citizenry and lift morale.
01:07:06 - No doubt.
01:07:08 When I talk about leadership,
01:07:11 I'm talking about leadership in the wider context
01:07:15 of the society, at the political level,
01:07:18 at the level of the institutions in our society,
01:07:22 at the level of the society itself.
01:07:25 We have had many good moments in the last 61 years.
01:07:29 The one that comes to mind very clearly to me
01:07:33 is the 1990 events.
01:07:36 It is not good in the sense that it happened.
01:07:38 It is good in the sense that we overcame it,
01:07:41 and we overcame it with all our political values intact.
01:07:45 And most important, we overcame it with society
01:07:49 responding to a crisis.
01:07:51 You really test a nation in moments of crisis.
01:07:55 And I think we were able to be tested at that time
01:07:59 in terms of our resilience for democracy
01:08:02 and in terms of our capacity to keep together
01:08:06 in order to resolve what was, in fact,
01:08:09 a major onslaught on our democratic institution.
01:08:13 - Mr. Dukkaran--
01:08:14 - We have had many other moments
01:08:16 that have not been as victorious as that,
01:08:19 and we must now try to ensure
01:08:22 that we can address those issues
01:08:24 by the right dose of leadership,
01:08:26 by the right quality of leadership,
01:08:29 and by the right approach to leadership in the society.
01:08:33 - Mr. Dukkaran, in your mind,
01:08:35 what are some of the major challenges
01:08:37 that Trinidad and Tobago is facing today?
01:08:40 - Well, we have just come out of a pandemic,
01:08:44 and it's a situation in which we must be quite thankful
01:08:49 that we are able in Trinidad and Tobago
01:08:52 to overcome that, or if not overcome that,
01:08:55 but to navigate the problems of that time
01:08:58 with a certain amount of comfort,
01:09:01 and that, I will say, is one of the positives as well.
01:09:04 We are now entering into a period
01:09:08 in which our development trajectory is under stress,
01:09:12 and that many of the policies
01:09:14 and the institutional performance of the past
01:09:17 are now being questioned,
01:09:20 and that is why I recently published
01:09:22 and got accepted for publication
01:09:24 by the University of Toronto
01:09:26 a book called "The Caribbean on the Edge,"
01:09:29 because I believe there are many Caribbeans,
01:09:32 and we are really one of those Caribbeans
01:09:35 in which we belong to the Caribbean civilization,
01:09:39 and in all different aspects,
01:09:40 whether it is in the field of governance,
01:09:43 or whether it's in the field of politics,
01:09:45 or whether it's in the field of trying to find
01:09:48 a rightful place in the global arena, we are on the edge.
01:09:52 To some extent, what I meant really
01:09:55 is that we are at a point that we don't know exactly
01:09:58 how to move and in what direction to go,
01:10:02 and therefore, we are at a standstill,
01:10:05 and it is that standstill
01:10:07 that is creating the level of disenchantment
01:10:09 that you made reference to earlier on,
01:10:13 but people want to be assured
01:10:15 that the future is one that we can chart,
01:10:17 not the future is one
01:10:19 in which we will simply be a victim of,
01:10:22 and I believe, given the changes
01:10:24 and the fact that the Caribbean is on the edge,
01:10:26 Trinidad and Tobago inclusive, is indicative of that.
01:10:31 There are many areas in which there's need
01:10:33 to build confidence,
01:10:35 and I think this is where we are
01:10:36 on the fixed 61st anniversary
01:10:40 to be able to build confidence to tackle these problems.
01:10:43 - Yes, Mr. Dukerain, if you'd allow us,

01:12:58 for a number of years, I suspect for most of your life.
01:13:02 As you look at the politics of today, what's your analysis?
01:13:06 - Well, the choice available at the electorate
01:13:13 is somewhat limited and is not based on a future direction

01:15:42 when we offered ourself in the purest form

01:18:03 and whether or not there would have been enough resources
01:18:06 to mobilize a political effort in the post-2007 period

01:19:14 while they have been relevant at that time,
01:19:16 discipline, production, and tolerance,
01:19:18 perhaps should have been changed
01:19:20 if we were to listen to Don Basil Matthews,
01:19:23 to the watchwords of unity, trust, and freedom.
01:19:26 I think they are more sociologically bounded,
01:19:29 and they are more likely to reflect the identity
01:19:32 of the people of our country as we move forward.
01:19:35 It is important to get the people united
01:19:38 and to remove the polarization that has taken place
01:19:42 as if we had voting machines in the country
01:19:45 that we can find a platform
01:19:48 in which we can unite on new watchwords.
01:19:51 Watchwords are only symbolic,
01:19:53 but tell us exactly what we want the society to do
01:19:57 and believe, and in that sense,
01:19:59 we could perhaps ignite a new conversation
01:20:02 on a new perspective in the 21st century
01:20:06 that will create a new excitement
01:20:08 similar to the one we felt and we experienced in 1962.
01:20:13 It wouldn't be the same,
01:20:14 but certainly it is worthy of it
01:20:16 because we have performed quite well as a nation.
01:20:20 We have maintained our democratic system of government
01:20:24 in spite of odds at many times,
01:20:26 and I think we must commend ourselves.
01:20:29 We have been able to move the nation forward,
01:20:32 but we have not been able to capture
01:20:34 the high aspirations of the people
01:20:37 to be able to unite itself,

01:20:40 and to be able to discharge the freedom

01:20:47 Mr. Dukkaran, we just have about one minute again,
01:20:50 but let's get back to your book a little bit.

01:21:02 and the time for reflection,
01:21:03 you said this is a moment of reflection,
01:21:05 is now to be able to answer that question,
01:21:09 and to answer that question,
01:21:10 we need some scholarship
01:21:12 and we need some deliberate conversations
01:21:16 and perhaps my view is that we should start
01:21:18 a new conversation on the future of the Caribbean,
01:21:22 which is what I ended my career in 2015,
01:21:25 by having a conference at the Hyatt Hotel
01:21:28 on the future of the Caribbean.
01:21:30 And there we outline the new directions
01:21:34 that we should take as a region and as a nation.
01:21:37 My takeaway in the book is that we should get back
01:21:40 to a new conversation.
01:21:42 - Yeah.
01:21:43 And persons may not remember,
01:21:44 but also Mr. Dukkaran would have received
01:21:46 the order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.
01:21:49 I believe that happened in 2015.
01:21:53 Mr. Dukkaran, I also understand that you have a perspective
01:21:57 on that too, concerning the award.
01:22:01 - Well, I was honored to be so conferred with such an award,
01:22:08 and I think it is a recognition
01:22:12 as a citizen of this country,
01:22:13 and I'm happy for it.
01:22:15 I felt that it is not been a dynamic award
01:22:19 in the sense that it is not recognized
01:22:22 for what it ought to be.
01:22:25 And therefore, that is part of the building
01:22:30 of the excitement.
01:22:33 National awards of that nature,
01:22:35 not only with respect to myself,
01:22:37 but so many others who have been able to award it
01:22:40 that should create a sense of acknowledgement of its worth.

01:22:55 so that the young generation can aspire
01:22:58 to reach heights in their own career.

01:34:42 the red card in the last match,
01:34:44 making its first appearance in the CPL.
01:34:46 We heard Kieron Pollard, he had his views regarding it.

01:34:54 What is the opinion of Stacey Anakin
01:34:55 regarding the red card when you saw it?
01:34:57 - I guess as a player, you'll always have,
01:35:00 you know, restricting thoughts about that red card situation
01:35:04 but from a competition perspective
01:35:06 and somebody posting or throwing a tournament,
01:35:08 you really want the game to go through.
01:35:10 You've got to look at ways to improve that game.
01:35:12 And one of the ways, because there are persons at home,
01:35:15 you know, just logging on just to see these matches,
01:35:18 we need to look at that time restriction.
01:35:20 So I'm all in for, I mean, it's tough for teams,
01:35:24 but that red card decision,
01:35:26 I guess something had to be done
01:35:28 because of the time in which it takes
01:35:30 some of these teams to get through those overs,
01:35:33 which is kind of wasting time as well.
01:35:35 I feel for TKR being the first team
01:35:39 to have gotten that red card.
01:35:41 And of course, it almost looked as though
01:35:42 it was Sunil Narine that got it at one point
01:35:45 because places started pointing fingers.
01:35:48 But in a sense, I think that it's good,
01:35:52 but it's also bad because of, you know,
01:35:54 that restriction that you have to now implement
01:35:57 and send somebody off the field.
01:35:59 But something has to work in order to get players
01:36:03 and get teams to get through the overs quickly.
01:36:05 So I think probably just knowing that you have a penalty,
01:36:10 it may now get teams to move a bit quicker.
01:36:13 - Yeah, certainly gonna be keeping our eyes on it.
01:36:15 Well, something that we're keeping our eyes on
01:36:17 is the big matchup today,
01:36:18 Barbados Royals versus the Chundigar Knight Riders.
01:36:21 Now, when you look at these teams level on points
01:36:24 at the moment, Barbados playing at home,
01:36:26 TKR having some momentum,
01:36:28 ooh, it's a feisty match later.
01:36:30 What's your expectations?
01:36:32 - Well, I expect good cricket, first of all.
01:36:35 I expect good weather because it has been raining here
01:36:38 overnight in Barbados.
01:36:39 I shouldn't probably say that.

01:36:41 there has been some rain in blue skies now,
01:36:46 but we just hope that the weather will, you know,
01:36:48 just play along and cooperate with the game tonight.
01:36:52 For both teams, TKR, I think they're coming in
01:36:55 with that momentum, as you mentioned,
01:36:57 because of the fact that, I mean, we've heard it
01:37:00 and we've seen it, they have a strong batting lineup,
01:37:03 but they weren't able to get runs on the board
01:37:05 with that batting lineup.
01:37:07 And the fact that they were able to chase that one
01:37:09 over 150 runs in that last match,
01:37:12 in with over Suspeh, with both Suspeh,
01:37:15 it means to me that, you know,
