00:00:00 Good morning. I am Ansel Gibbs with a news update.
00:00:06 The United National Congress has filed an election petition in the High Court seeking
00:00:12 a ruling in favor of blocking a fresh election in the Electoral District of Lengua, Indian
00:00:19 Woke. The UNC claims a ballot in favor of the UNC's
00:00:23 candidate was wrongfully rejected by the Elections and Boundaries Commission. The EBC has said
00:00:31 it is following the election rules. Following the shooting death of a security
00:00:38 officer while on duty at an ATM in Kunupia last week, the Estate Police Association is
00:00:45 demanding change. We are calling for a reversal of the policy
00:00:48 by the Commission of Police because the threat level has gone up. We are calling for the
00:00:55 minimum level of police progress to be level 3, level 3, which will give you some protection
00:01:05 against the AR-15, the 556 wrong and those kind of wrong, those high-versity problems.
00:01:15 And in the weather forecast, predominantly hot and sunny daytime conditions prevail,
00:01:21 despite the low chance of a few passing showers. Seas are calm to moderate in open waters,
00:01:27 with swells approaching 1.2 meters and increasing overnight.

00:03:08 Well, a very good morning Trinidad and Tobago. What a sweeter day to start your day than
00:03:34 with some sugar. I'm Urvashi Thavari-Ripnerine and welcome to the Morning Edition. It's of
00:03:40 course the 23rd of August 2023. Welcome back to all our viewers and thank you so much for
00:03:46 joining us and of course choosing us to start off your day. Well, as is customary, we like
00:03:52 to tell you what's happening in Trinidad and Tobago and for that, we go straight to the
00:03:56 front pages of the Express newspaper. Grab your copy now or head on to www.trinidadexpress.com.
00:04:06 Election petition filed in the fight for Langua Indian Walk. This of course follows from our
00:04:11 discussion yesterday morning with political scientist Dr. Mukesh Bastew. So, at the center
00:04:18 of this court matter is that single ballot which was rejected by the EBC officials in
00:04:25 the recount, there were two recounts, in which the UNC has argued was in favor of Gopal,
00:04:32 Nicole Gopal, that is of course the UNC candidate. The UNC is saying she would have been the
00:04:37 clear winner with 1,429 votes. Now, attorney Vishal Siusaran acting on behalf of Nicole
00:04:49 Gopal Jones, he submitted a certificate of urgency to the court requesting that this
00:04:55 matter be heard urgently. Of course, we look forward to finding out what is the outcome
00:05:02 of this matter. That feature picture there, stranded ordeal waiting to return United States
00:05:09 cancer patient J. Bondal from the left, Trinidad born U.S. resident Adrian Critchlow, 22 month
00:05:17 old, very cute, AJ Critchlow, Allison Bondal and Freddie Bondal at the Radisson Hotel in
00:05:23 Port of Spain. They spoke with the Express yesterday. They were stranded in Trinidad
00:05:28 last week due to that sick out action by Caribbean Airlines pilots. Now, Cal has paid for their
00:05:34 accommodation but of course, more than likely, they want to return home. To tell you what's
00:05:41 happening in sport, we go to that back page. It's a painfully close. Jareem just misses
00:05:48 the 400 final. That picture there, fine run. Jareem "The Dream" Richards looks up at the
00:05:54 Giant scoreboard after his World Athletics Championship men's 400 metre semifinal heat
00:06:01 at the National Athletic Centre in Budapest, Hungary yesterday. The TNT athlete finished
00:06:08 fourth in 44.76 seconds and did not advance to the final. We're so proud of you, Jareem.
00:06:16 Keep on dreaming that dream. Well, it's time to remind you of our Trinbago, your nice feature
00:06:22 to participate. It's very, very easy. WhatsApp your videos and your images to that number
00:06:27 on your screen 737-3778 and we get to share it with the rest of Trinbago. This morning,
00:06:34 we share with you an image from one of our viewers, a loyal viewer. It's a sunset overlooking
00:06:41 King Peter's Beach in Tobago. Isn't that just beautiful? Of course, we've got a packed show
00:06:46 up ahead. We're going to kick off our show chatting on the political landscape with Conrad
00:06:52 Enel, the TT High Commissioner to Guyana. We'll be again talking about TT-Guyana relations.
00:06:58 So do stay with us. We'll be right back.

01:05:33 Well, talk your talk. We now open the lines.
01:05:36 We'd love to hear from you, our viewers.
01:05:38 Call us at 623-1711, extension 1995.
01:05:43 I'd like to say a special good morning to my friend Sandra from Brazil Village in Arima.
01:05:49 A very good morning to you and the entire family.
01:05:52 And of course to those two ladies who literally left their shopping to run me down in Food Hall,
01:05:59 all the way to my car just to say hello.
01:06:02 Those things really make your day.
01:06:04 And as I always say, we love to meet the people on the other side of this TV screen.
01:06:10 So whenever you see us, be sure to say hello.
01:06:13 Well, viewers, what would you like to talk about?
01:06:15 I saw a very interesting, a 10-minute long video last night.
01:06:21 You know, with this altercation between a supposed South businessman and his, well, his partner, we should say.
01:06:33 And then there was, he did in quick order, that video went viral yesterday, it's 10 minutes long.
01:06:40 The woman appeared to be coughed, threatened that he would use a pliers to pull out her teeth.
01:06:46 And then to also, he also said he'll use a knife to scar her face and so on.
01:06:53 And then in quick order, I saw someone sent me this this morning.
01:06:57 He did post an apology saying, "Never thought I'd be posting something like this today, but I write this with much remorse and regret.
01:07:05 In my heart, I'd like to apologize to the young lady and her family for the pain and anguish caused by this incident.
01:07:13 Secondly, I also want to apologize to my family and friends and those who hold me in high regard.
01:07:19 And of course, to the general public who would have been deeply disturbed by this occurrence.
01:07:23 My actions were inexcusable, regardless of what would have transpired minutes before.
01:07:29 The situation should have been dealt with differently."
01:07:32 We've got a caller on the line. Caller, good morning to you.
01:07:35 Yes, good morning, Mr. Rishi.
01:07:38 I am just totally upset with this murder tool.
01:07:45 I think it's 11 to 15, I believe, over the Monday, last Friday to Monday.
01:07:53 And what is irking me about this is that I'm not hearing from the authorities, the Minister of National Security, the Commissioner of Police, this gang warfare.
01:08:03 Recently in the news day, I read about Jamaica's Prime Minister, Andrew Holness, talking openly about he's going to...
01:08:12 There was some big gang murder in Jamaica, I think last week, affecting many people.
01:08:19 And he said he's going to take an all-out war on these criminals, the Jamaican Prime Minister.
01:08:26 So this thing is upsetting me so much. And I am wondering how the international community is looking at Trinidad and Tobago with all of these gang murders.
01:08:37 Day and night, people walking into people's homes, shooting them dead.
01:08:42 I mean, if they don't look dead, they're going back and shooting them three, four, five times.
01:08:47 What is really happening in this country?
01:08:50 Thank you very much, Kola. We certainly appreciate your comments and your views.
01:08:56 And just this morning on news chat, I'm seeing that there was a shooting in Claxton Bay, one male.
01:09:02 Then there were, according to this comment, level shots in Currap, McEnroy Street.
01:09:09 And as we see in Trinidad, Railcorn, in the Mount Hope Hospital, one male and female were reported to have entered.
01:09:16 Both of them having gunshot wounds, and that would have been pursuant from the McEnroy-Currap shooting.
01:09:22 And I also get from you that there ought to be some level of accountability, and you'd in fact like to hear from our leaders.
01:09:29 Not in particular the prime minister, but certainly the minister of national security and the commissioner of police.
01:09:36 Of course, yesterday when we had the TTPS here in studio, I did extend an invitation to the commissioner of police to join us.
01:09:44 We'd love to hear from her. We've got another caller on the line. Kola, good morning to you.
01:09:49 Good morning, and welcome back. It's good to see your face here on the show again.
01:09:53 I just want to say that we have to be a bit patient. It takes about five to seven years to get crime under control.
01:10:00 The police are doing their job, but they just don't have enough equipment to spread around in order to carry electronic surveillance.
01:10:07 And they still have to go through the constitution to carry electronic surveillance.
01:10:11 The minute you know somebody has happened, you know there's going to be revenge.
01:10:15 So you have to be able to electronically surveillance everybody, telephone and friends and houses,
01:10:20 but you have to go to the courts to get that approved. And that needs to be approved almost immediately,
01:10:24 if you're really going to have control and consistent crime.
01:10:27 We need more drones in the sky, but all of this takes money and time.
01:10:30 So we have to be a little bit patient, okay?
01:10:33 So with respect to you, Kola, thank you so much for calling in.
01:10:36 In those five to seven years, how many more will be killed or mutilated, maimed and so on?
01:10:43 How many more persons will we lose in those five years?
01:10:46 Already, I'm doing an express house account this morning.
01:10:50 It was about 373 murders yesterday.
01:10:54 We're way ahead of last year's.
01:10:57 Another caller on the line. Good morning to you, Kola.
01:11:00 Hello, President. Good day to you.
01:11:03 Good morning. You can go right ahead.
01:11:06 Yes, in Jesus' name, thank God for the gift of life.
01:11:14 Thank God, God bless our country, Trinidad and Tobago and the world.
01:11:21 I am calling concerning this crime, people calling crime, this and the court government doing.
01:11:35 Are we?
01:11:38 We seem to be getting some feedback and echoes from you, Kola.
01:11:42 I'm very sorry, but we did get your blessings this morning, so we thank God for that as well.
01:11:48 I think we may be just out of time for your calls, but just to tell you, Kola, we really do love hearing from you.
01:11:56 We're now going to go to a quick break.
01:11:58 And as we head off to the break, we share with you this image.
01:12:01 It comes from Shanice Charles.
01:12:03 Thank you very much, Shanice. A very hello and good morning to you.
01:12:08 We'll be right back.

01:15:26 Welcome back to Trinidad and Tobago.
01:15:28 Switching gears a little bit now, we'll be talking about the African Entertainment Awards.
01:15:33 With us live on set to tell us more about the decision to come to Trinidad and Tobago this year
01:15:39 are the African Entertainment Awards USA President Dominic Tamen and Ambassador for the Caribbean, Ikaia Isis.
01:15:47 A very good morning to you both. Thank you so much for joining us.
01:15:50 I take it I got both names correct.
01:15:52 Yes, correct. Thank you for having us.
01:15:53 So, tell us a little bit about the African Entertainment Awards. Dominic?
01:15:59 Well, Urvashi, thank you for having us. It's a pleasure to be here in Trinidad and Tobago.
01:16:04 This is my first time here, not the last.
01:16:07 African Entertainment Awards was started in 2015.
01:16:11 The objective was to use entertainment as a platform to unite Africans globally.
01:16:16 As you know, when it comes to Africa, it's very diverse, but there's one thing that's in common,
01:16:23 which is entertainment, which is music and sports, soccer.
01:16:28 So, we're thinking about what would be the one common thing that unites us, that we can come together and have fun.
01:16:34 And that was entertainment.
01:16:36 And as a result, we came up with African Entertainment Awards.
01:16:39 It's the mission is to use entertainment as a platform to unite Africans globally.
01:16:43 And now we're extending it to the rest of the world.
01:16:49 So, we started off with the USA. Is that so?
01:16:53 Yes, we started in the USA and we plan on having it in different places in Africa as well.
01:17:01 Hopefully, we can have it here in Trinidad, in Tobago, and then go across the Caribbean.
01:17:08 The Caribbean Diaspora.
01:17:10 So, you're looking at uniting Africans from, as you mentioned, across the globe.
01:17:15 Now, I'm just looking at your T-shirt. There you have so many different countries.
01:17:19 Those would be the African countries and so on.
01:17:22 But aside from Africa, the Caribbean, USA, where else?
01:17:27 What do you mean, aside from Africa, Caribbean, USA?
01:17:31 Aside from those countries or those territories, where else are you seeking to bring in nominees and so on from?
01:17:39 We also have Latin America as well.
01:17:42 We have the Afro-Latin community, which is heavily populated with Africans who were bred to Latin America.
01:17:48 So, we have, for example, we have Columbia, that we're also working on.
01:17:53 We have some nominees from that area as well.
01:17:57 Why was this established?
01:18:04 I know that you wanted to unite people of African origin, but why did you see that necessary?
01:18:11 Because we need our own platform. Africans need their own platform.
01:18:20 And also, it's important to bridge the gap between Africans on the continent and the ones in the diaspora.
01:18:25 So, yes, and like Dominic said, entertainment is key to do so.
01:18:30 Well, exactly. We needed a platform where we can control and be able to have our own.
01:18:37 I mean, if you look at other awards, I will not call any names because I don't want to give anybody a credit for them.
01:18:43 So, if you look at other awards shows, predominantly in the United States as well, you don't see a lot of our people being nominees.
01:18:52 And we wanted something, our own platform that we can be proud of.
01:18:55 Is it also because, you know, due to slavery and so on, and what happened during slavery that there was, you know, Africans had to disconnect from their culture and so on, and now, you know, you're seeking to bridge that gap?
01:19:09 Thank you so much, Urvashi. You just made it simpler.
01:19:13 Yes, and that's one of the reasons why we started the African Entertainment Awards.
01:19:18 As you can see, we're here in Trinidad and also in Columbia.
01:19:22 And just based on what you just said, that is part of the reason why.
01:19:26 Now, it's about time for all of us, wherever you are in the world, to come together and to have a common unit, you know, and one voice.
01:19:36 And what a better way than music, as you mentioned.
01:19:40 So, Aikaya, you're Trini-born. Tell us a bit about your childhood.
01:19:44 Well, I was born and raised in Trinidad. I grew up in Valencia, Eastside. I left Trinidad in 2005.
01:19:53 Yeah, I grew up in the country.
01:19:56 You migrated.
01:19:58 Yes, I migrated to the U.S. and I'm actually based in New Jersey where the African Entertainment Awards show the inception of the AEUSA, yes, in 2015.
01:20:09 What made you join with the AEUSA?
01:20:14 Okay, so in 2015, I was Naskarakom Queen representing Trinidad and Tobago.
01:20:21 And I was a guest on their show, their first show.
01:20:25 And that's how I was recognized. And we made that connection.
01:20:30 And every year after, they invited me, but I was unable because I was out of the U.S.
01:20:35 And in 2019, I was a nominee on their platform for Model of the Year, because I also model.
01:20:41 And I won my category with the help of my supporters, mainly Trinidadians from Trinidad and Tobago.
01:20:48 And yeah, after that, I was given the opportunity to be Caribbean Diaspora Ambassador for the Caribbean Diaspora.
01:20:54 And here I am.
01:20:55 Here you are.
01:20:56 So, Dominic, let's talk about the Caribbean.
01:20:58 There's a special focus on Trinidad, and I take it also Jamaica, because they're very rich in culture and also music.
01:21:06 Oh, yes, special focus in Trinidad.
01:21:08 I've always have some roots in Trinidad when it comes to it is my association.
01:21:13 I guess I mentioned, I Sasha, whom I met in 2008 in the United States.
01:21:21 Sasha's cousin is one of my best friends in the States.
01:21:24 And I've always been involved in and so fascinated with the Soca music, you know, coming from Trinidad.
01:21:31 And Trinidad music is heavily well known, especially Soca internationally.
01:21:36 And we feel the need to come here and to have a hub.
01:21:40 And the fact that we also have our Model of the Year, which in 2019, we see it's like everywhere I turn around, someone is coming from Trinidad.
01:21:51 We have a very strong diaspora.
01:21:54 Yes. And we wanted to represent the Caribbean, the diaspora.
01:22:01 And we feel the need to come here as one of our hub.
01:22:05 As well as Jamaica as well.
01:22:07 We're going to be also traveling to Jamaica and other Caribbean countries.
01:22:11 Which other Caribbean countries are you looking at?
01:22:14 We're looking at, well, personally, we have a connection in Barbados, Grenada, Jamaica, obviously, Bermuda.
01:22:26 So we have connections in different Caribbean countries.
01:22:32 Yes. I'd like to make mention that one of the purpose, you know, reasons behind this for me is that we are known in Trinidad for Soca.
01:22:41 Wherever I go, "Where are you from Trinidad?" Soca, Carnival, that's the first thing.
01:22:45 And in Trinidad, there's a lot of different talents, a lot of different genres of music.
01:22:49 So for me, this African and CIMA Award platform would give space for other talents out of Trinidad to shine.
01:22:58 You know, not just Soca music, because there's so many.
01:23:01 So many other. Yeah. Because of the fusion as well.
01:23:04 I'm not sure if Dominic is attuned to our cultural and ethnic makeup, but there's so much of fusion.
01:23:10 You probably know about Chutney music as well, because it's very big, the whole thing in the United States.
01:23:17 It's now becoming a way of culture.
01:23:19 You have a little bit of tutoring to do.
01:23:21 Work to do. Yeah, yeah, yeah. A little bit of work to do.
01:23:23 But our music is highly influenced from that fusion, you know, of different cultures coming together.
01:23:29 And even other islands as well, you do, in fact, see that.
01:23:33 What categories are up for grabs in these awards?
01:23:37 There's so many categories we can't even speak.
01:23:40 We have over 40 categories and we have some nominees here in Trinidad in which we will unveil at the CIMA Awards event.
01:23:51 Correct? Yes. We have categories.
01:23:53 A few to mention. Best male, female artists, best male and female artists.
01:24:00 We have best designer, best videographer, best music video, best rising star.
01:24:07 There's different categories for everyone to plug in.
01:24:11 How many do we have from Trinidad?
01:24:13 We would like not to disclose that information because we want to encourage people to come to the event on the 25th, which is Friday at Zaha Night Live.
01:24:26 We have a few.
01:24:27 It's a gala stage, right?
01:24:29 Yes. Well, it's a red carpet setting.
01:24:32 We have some interviews, some pictures taken.
01:24:35 It's really a celebration.
01:24:38 President Dominic Truman would introduce himself, introduce the nominees out of Trinidad for the 2023 award.
01:24:44 And we have some performances by Sasha, King David, Anomaly out of Tobago, Rassi.
01:24:49 We have Keiji who won his award.
01:24:51 Yes.
01:24:52 We have Mello, the only female artist, which is now renamed Rising Star.
01:24:59 After that, the performances, we're just going to have a good time.
01:25:04 We're also giving out best dressed male and female award.
01:25:07 It's optional if you want to participate.
01:25:11 You have to wear an ethnic Afro-long wear.
01:25:13 Yes, keep it Afro-centric if you want to participate in winning the award.
01:25:16 And we also have two awards that the artists are not aware of that we're giving out at the show as well.
01:25:24 Excellent. So we have two surprises.
01:25:26 As we close, Dominic, the finals for the 2023 awards.
01:25:30 The 2023 award will be held in New Jersey, 11/11/2023.
01:25:36 Yes.
01:25:37 We're encouraging everyone to definitely support.
01:25:40 We want to continue coming to Trinidad and Tobago for an annual show, which I'm going to name, Ignite the Stage Every Year.
01:25:50 Year one, year two, and year three.
01:25:53 Again, we want to make sure that we are very inclusive.
01:25:57 We encourage the residents of Trinidad and Tobago to support the award show because we need our own.
01:26:06 We feel like we know that with this platform, we can cultivate young talents in Trinidad because that's the purpose of the award.
01:26:15 And we want to basically give back to the community.
01:26:20 Absolutely.
01:26:21 So let me thank you both for coming here.
01:26:23 Let me properly welcome you, Dominic Tamin, President of the African Entertainment Awards USA.
01:26:29 And of course, Aikaya Isis, welcome you back to Trinidad and Tobago.
01:26:33 Thank you all so much for joining us.
01:26:35 We wish you all the best on the Ignite the Stage event this Friday at ZAR.

01:34:08 Welcome to the TV6 "Bowl Them Out" cricket show.
01:34:11 I'm your host, Sergio Dufour.
01:34:13 Here's what we have planned for you today.
01:34:15 The Chinbago Knight Riders, well, they share their thoughts on the start of the tournament.
01:34:19 And what can we expect when the tournament reaches TNT?
01:34:23 (music)
01:34:35 All right, so what can we expect tonight?
01:34:37 Let's hope for no rain, of course.
01:34:39 St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots will be taking on Jamaica Taloise from 7 p.m.
01:34:44 Let's see who wins this contest.
01:34:46 Now, we have an important interview to go to.
01:34:49 Good morning, Mr. Board.
01:34:51 Are you joining us this morning from Zoom?
01:34:53 All right, so we'll work on that.
01:34:59 We'll work on getting Mr. Cullen Board, TKR manager, to speak with us, of course, this morning
01:35:04 on what's happening with them.
01:35:06 Of course, as you know, they played the first match and that was rained out 19-for-1.
01:35:11 So let's hope that the next time they meet, you know, we get to see some action between the two teams.
01:35:17 You know, we have, they have a lot planned and we'd like to see the changes that are made.
01:35:23 You know, we have, we'll be hosting some matches in Trinidad and Tobago.
01:35:27 Now, the oval, as you know, has been, they've improved drainage at the Queen's Park Oval.
01:35:34 So we have a lot to speak about when it comes to that.
01:35:36 So let's try Mr. Board again.
01:35:38 Good morning, Mr. Board.
01:35:39 All right.
01:35:45 Okay, so we'll continue to stand by with Mr. Cullen Board this morning.
01:35:50 We're working on getting him to speak with us, of course, on TKR and what we can expect from them.
01:35:57 So as I was saying, the Queen's Park Oval has had, you know, they've improved their drainage.
01:36:02 So let's see how that works out when that time comes around.
01:36:05 And it's largely untested.
01:36:07 This would be the Brian Lara Cricket Academy when it comes to rain.
01:36:11 So, you know, we would not, of course, like to see a situation like that happen again.
01:36:16 So let's see if anything changes with regards to that.
01:36:20 But in the meantime, we have had some interviews done with the various teams.
01:36:25 So let's see if we can get an interview going or the interview that is regarding Mr. Kion Otley.
01:36:34 Let's see if we can get that interview going.
01:36:36 And we will definitely try to contact Mr. Cullen Board as the program progresses.
01:36:42 Yes.
01:36:43 Let's see.
01:36:45 All right.
01:36:48 So where are cricketers born?
01:36:50 Well, in a camp, of course.
01:36:52 There they learn to bowl, and it can be difficult.
01:36:55 But with consistent practice, it begins to take shape.
01:36:59 It was the task given to West Indies batsman Kion Otley at a central sports training camp,
01:37:05 training the individuals how to bowl.
01:37:08 What was your advice to some players, you know, that you saw not exactly rounding their arms
01:37:13 and now learning the technical areas of the sport?
01:37:16 I didn't--I wasn't trying to complicate it too much for them.
01:37:21 I was just telling them to shorten the run-up, just focusing on keeping the arms straight.
01:37:25 And, well, basically to me it was just like once I see improvement in them,
01:37:29 because I don't expect them to get it immediately.
01:37:31 If you were to coach yourself, do you think it would have been difficult to coach?
01:37:35 Probably I think all kids have some difficulties.
01:37:42 Because most of them sometimes it's hard to focus for a certain amount of time,
01:37:46 so you just have to be on them and keep motivating them to do well and to improve themselves.
01:37:52 He also imparted his knowledge about batting,
01:37:55 but it requires a little more expertise to know how to bat in the power play.
01:38:00 If you were to play in any position, this is batting, what position would it be in T20 cricket?
01:38:06 Well, my preference is opening batting.
01:38:09 And what would your approach be in the first six overs?
01:38:15 Just to capitalize on the power play and see how much runs I can get my team off
01:38:20 and as good a start as possible.
01:38:22 Is that always the approach, in particular, if you're chasing as well?
01:38:27 I would say don't want to complicate it too much.
01:38:32 Sometimes small scores can be a bit difficult at times, depending on how you go about it.
01:38:39 So I think most of the times you want to go that approach, unless the wicket is really bad.
01:38:44 What do coaches normally tell you in terms of your role as a batsman?
01:38:49 Do they tell you to play more aggressive and let the other batsmen rotate the strike?
01:38:53 How do coaches normally approach your batting?
01:38:56 I think, basically, the coach will have to know who's your partner
01:39:03 and I think he'll look at the tactics from there, who's the aggressor
01:39:06 and who's the one playing the supporting role.
01:39:11 That said, who will he be supporting in the CPL?
01:39:14 I don't have any favourites. I will support my close friends.
01:39:20 Hope everyone does well and may the best team win in CPL.
01:39:24 Of course, you wish Keone Otley lots of luck.
01:39:27 So let's try Mr Colin Board again this morning.
01:39:30 How are you this morning, Mr Board?
01:39:32 Morning, morning. Finally got on. Thank you.
01:39:35 Sorry for the delay, but we've been struggling with some technicalities here.
01:39:38 Yes, well, it's almost expected we get these technical difficulties from time to time.
01:39:44 So tell me, is the team in St Kitts?
01:39:47 Yes, we are. We're in St Kitts, Marriott.
01:39:49 And we are leaving now to go to our second training session.
01:39:53 Last night we had a fielding session under lights.
01:39:56 Just to get our climate right a little bit, the lights and the wind conditions and so on.
01:40:01 And this morning we're training from 8 o'clock to 10.30 at the stadium.
01:40:06 Well, that definitely sounds good. It sounds like it's dry, sunny conditions.
01:40:12 Can you confirm this?
01:40:13 It's very sunny conditions. Yesterday was beautiful. It was a lovely day yesterday.
01:40:18 Which is good. After having been battered for a couple of days in St Lucia,
01:40:23 it was good to get out into the sunshine yesterday.
01:40:25 And today again, of course, it starts off well.
01:40:27 Let's hope it stays the same for the rest of the day.
01:40:29 All right. So what's the priority for the team at this point?
01:40:33 Train hard. And of course, from the coaching perspective,
01:40:37 they would have had their plans laid out for the opposition,
01:40:40 upcoming opposition. And of course, we'll train with that in mind.
01:40:44 As I said last night, the training session would have been under lights
01:40:47 just to get our climate right a little bit, the lighting conditions in St Kitts.
01:40:51 Each stadium has different types of lighting conditions.
01:40:54 So it's just so clear to get adjusted to the wind, cooling, the lighting,
01:40:59 and a couple of things that the coach himself would say.
01:41:02 Have them take note of length of boundaries.
01:41:05 We have guys who are boundary riders, guys who will be assigned to catch in the deep.
01:41:10 So the little things that the coaches would put together.
01:41:12 And then, of course, they'll go through the pre-season last night and again today.
01:41:15 Well, that's definitely very insightful.
01:41:17 Now, does the team consider their first run out against the St Lucia Patriots
01:41:22 as a first game officially?
01:41:24 We've got a point from it. So, I mean, that helps.
01:41:29 It's a short run out, really. There's much cricket was played at the Street Robos.
01:41:32 But, I mean, we were there and we got to use the things
01:41:35 that went through the preparation before the game.
01:41:37 So whenever you look at things like that, you try to look at it
01:41:39 and see what you could have gained from it.
01:41:41 And I think really just more game situation and getting ready to play.
01:41:45 We didn't have much cricket to play, but that's OK.
01:41:48 It is what it is and you can't control that.
01:41:50 So we moved on from that. Now what we're doing is looking ahead.
01:41:53 Really and truly the important part is the next step.
01:41:55 We're not taking it too far down the road,
01:41:57 but more so next step on how we prepare for the next opponent.
01:42:01 I think that's the most important thing, staying focused on what you have to do
01:42:04 on each day and on each session that you train.
01:42:07 Now, do you think consideration should be given for matches
01:42:10 to be replayed when there is a no result?
01:42:12 Is there any sort of... Is that in the book for CPL at all?
01:42:16 Well, I think every year and every tournament that's planned around the world
01:42:20 is planned with a window.
01:42:22 And some of the constraints for windows is availability of players.
01:42:26 There's a lot of cricket being played globally,
01:42:29 both internationally and franchise cricket.
01:42:31 So players are jumping from country to country
01:42:34 and playing with the national teams and qualifiers and so on all the time.
01:42:38 So you really have to work within the small window that you do have.
01:42:41 And I'm quite sure when they're planning that they always plan
01:42:44 with the idea of having an extra day.
01:42:46 And that's difficult from a logistical standpoint.
01:42:49 You're moving quite a number of people.
01:42:51 We have private aircrafts being used to be able to make sure
01:42:54 that we get where we need to get on time.
01:42:56 Moving of equipment.
01:42:57 There's a lot of variables and a lot of things that have to be done
01:43:00 to host the tournament.
01:43:02 So that extra day has been considered over the years,
01:43:05 and I'm quite sure it's going to be considered again.
01:43:07 I think this was a rare one-off.
01:43:09 As we said, generally, we don't lose many games there.
01:43:12 But the weather was particularly bad.
01:43:14 I mean, for those who were here,
01:43:16 it was torrential rain and heavy winds and stuff.
01:43:19 So unfortunately for everybody,
01:43:21 it didn't happen for the fans and television and so on.
01:43:24 So unfortunately that's the case.
01:43:26 I know it's been considered, but it's a really tight window.
01:43:29 If you look at the length of CPL, very short, very quick.
01:43:32 And it's all premised on the other tournaments
01:43:34 and the other international games that are happening in and around it.
01:43:37 So you've seen CPL move its dates generally by a week or two,
01:43:41 and that's accommodated all of the other variables
01:43:43 that play a part in having a competition.
01:43:46 Are you confident that when matches come to Trinidad and Tobago,
01:43:49 the drainage will be good for the Oval and the Brian Lara Academy?
01:43:53 100% confident.
01:43:55 We've played games there every year
01:43:57 in the last couple of years in August and September.
01:44:00 We saw Oval at the lead at Spitz,
01:44:02 and we know that Terribas has good drainage.
01:44:04 So let's hope that things run smoothly.
01:44:06 It will all depend on the level of rainfall
01:44:09 and how close to the game that rainfall occurs.
01:44:11 I think that's the important thing.
01:44:13 It's not just a sip that water can run through.
01:44:16 It depends on the volume of water,
01:44:18 the water table in the area,
01:44:20 depends on the amount of rain, rainfall prior to the games.
01:44:24 There are a couple of things that have to be taken into consideration,
01:44:27 but I feel very confident that we will be ready.
01:44:30 Definitely. Well, of course, we will stay with us, Mr. Budd.
01:44:34 We have more to talk to you on.
01:44:35 But first, we have another segment that we'd like to introduce.
01:44:38 Now, every time the Caribbean Premier League comes around,
01:44:41 there are some moments that permanently reside in our memory.
01:44:45 Some to make you laugh, others to make you cry,
01:44:47 and some downright inspirational, blood-pumping memories.
01:44:51 It's for this reason we bring to you a new segment
01:44:54 which captures these moments when they happened before, during, or after matches.
01:44:58 It's our Sunshine Moment.
01:45:00 On this occasion, James Saunders got it right.

01:49:17 Welcome back to the show.
01:49:20 Now, here's the standings if it is that you have forgotten.
01:49:24 Okay, St. Lucia Kings, well, they've played the most matches so far,
01:49:28 followed by Jamaica Tallowers, St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots, Barbados Royals,
01:49:33 Guyana Amazon Warriors, and TKR.
01:49:36 They're all hoping for some action very soon.
01:49:40 So, of course, we rejoin Mr. Cullen Board.
01:49:43 Now, Mr. Board, I would like to know, are players fit and healthy for when they return to the field on Saturday?
01:49:51 Definitely, we have all our players.
01:49:53 In fact, we have an excellent medical team as well.
01:49:57 A number of players are coming off previous tournaments.
01:49:59 And the important part is to know and track them prior to coming to this tournament if there are any niggles.
01:50:05 So, generally, what we do is we keep in contact with the other medical staff from other teams,
01:50:09 where if players are in other teams, whether it be wrestling or not,
01:50:11 and then there's a handover period where they will pass on information on each one of the players that we have.
01:50:17 And we continue that treatment or whatever it is that we work with them.
01:50:20 Players will always have niggling injuries because they're putting their bodies on the line all the time.
01:50:25 But we're good. Everything is fine. All the players are in good shape.
01:50:27 Everybody's there training this morning. It was about five minutes ago.
01:50:31 And we're all ready and set to go.
01:50:34 All systems in place.
01:50:36 Now, is the team getting sufficient time to practice?
01:50:38 And in particular, does the captain have time to view all the players so that he can select the best eleven?
01:50:45 Yeah, I remember we would have started our camp in Trinidad on August 8th.
01:50:51 So, we had a good, solid camp in Trinidad.
01:50:53 We had two sessions per day, so that was pretty good.
01:50:56 The guys that were present got to hit the rest of the guys who were playing cricket.
01:51:00 So, they're up and running.
01:51:02 I mean, we've seen Peran, Akhil Hussain, being playing for international cricket,
01:51:06 then playing MLC before, Andre Russell playing MLC, and then playing out in GT Threats in Canada.
01:51:12 So, all of the players that are coming in that are here have been seen.
01:51:16 I mean, they're well known. That's why they were selected.
01:51:18 So, we're all good there in that regard.
01:51:19 And of course, we've been able to train in Sydney.
01:51:21 So, we've got our training days.
01:51:23 We only lost a game there, but we've got all the sessions we needed.
01:51:26 We got one last night. We're going to get another one today.
01:51:29 We have another one tomorrow.
01:51:30 So, we have sufficient training sessions for our players to be seen.
01:51:34 And I am quite sure the selection committee already has its idea of generally what they start in a level.
01:51:40 Now, you mentioned earlier that you're looking at different players to see where they play best.
01:51:45 So, should you put them on the boundary?
01:51:47 Should you put them on the inner circle?
01:51:49 Are you looking at putting taller players on the boundary?
01:51:53 What are we looking at?
01:51:55 Yeah, one, the taller players, they work out there obviously.
01:51:57 Because we want to protect the sixes and so on.
01:52:00 But it's also about mobility.
01:52:01 Who can throw better? Who can attack the ball better?
01:52:04 So, there are various players who are very strong in various areas based on their physical attributes.
01:52:08 And there are some tall guys that cover a lot of ground.
01:52:10 There are some guys that don't get down well.
01:52:12 So, there are a couple of guys that identify as what would be considered boundary riders.
01:52:17 And there are guys who will play the inner circle in the first part of the game as the outfielders.
01:52:23 And then they'll come on the inside.
01:52:24 So, there's a rotation of players based on circumstances in the game and what is needed.
01:52:28 Guys who particularly feel well in certain areas, certain angles.
01:52:32 Whether they're left-hand, right-hand, have a good throw, can throw flat, lob it.
01:52:36 And it depends on the skill sets of the players that the coaches will work out
01:52:40 throughout the course of any particular game where particular players should be.
01:52:44 And based on what is required of the material type.
01:52:48 So, everybody's looked at.
01:52:49 And then, of course, a formula will come up.
01:52:51 What is the best way to be able to produce the best cleaning unit?
01:52:54 That's an important component that should not be taken for granted.
01:52:58 And we worked really hard on that.
01:53:00 And again, last night, again, and quite short today, again,
01:53:03 we cover all bases, batting, bowling.
01:53:07 And, of course, feeling plays a huge part in the shorter portion of the game
01:53:10 because every run is--you can lose a match by one run, you can lose a match by two runs.
01:53:15 You have to be very, very sharp.
01:53:17 Those are the things that the coaches, staff, and fielding group will work hard on
01:53:21 and continue to work throughout the tournament.
01:53:23 - Well, who are you picking for tonight's match between Jamaica Talawazans
01:53:26 and Kitsanibis Patriots? In a few words.
01:53:29 - None.
01:53:31 To me, it doesn't matter at this stage of the game.
01:53:34 We really focus on what we want to do.
01:53:36 You know, if the games could finish one point, one point, it would be a great idea for us
01:53:40 because that gives us the opportunity to leap ahead.
01:53:42 But really, I mean, look closely and look at who you would like to win.
01:53:45 It's early days in the tournament, and at this stage, what you really want to do is--
01:53:48 you really want to just focus on your game and who your next opponent is
01:53:52 and how you can play in all the facets of your game, both on and off the field,
01:53:56 how you try to get better as an organization.
01:53:58 So we are challenging ourselves at this stage.
01:54:00 And then when the opponents come up,
01:54:02 then we let the technical part sit, work on the details, and then we go forward.
01:54:07 But as you guys pick in a game, neither nor for me.
01:54:10 I am TKF. I focus on TKF.
01:54:13 - Excellent. Mr. Board, best of luck with your match and managing the team.
01:54:17 Now, we do have another sponsored segment.
01:54:20 Now, I have a little riddle for you.
01:54:21 I am going to show you some faces that I know you won't want to see anytime soon.
01:54:25 However, if you do see these individuals,
01:54:28 I know you'll be rooting for them to get the job done efficiently.
01:54:32 Now, can you figure it out? Well, let's check it out.
01:54:35 [music]
01:54:45 Well, if your answer was a groundsman,
01:54:47 then you would be entitled to feel a sense of pride.
01:54:51 Or allow me to exaggerate and say you should feel like that one-cent coin
01:54:55 in your pants pocket wrapped in lint.
01:54:57 You're that special.
01:54:58 That's right. Your answer is only worthy of bragging rights and nothing more.
01:55:03 However, yes, these are the individuals that stroll out on the field bare feet.
01:55:09 We've seen them trip over themselves at times, running on to save the precious pitch.
01:55:14 And I can almost guarantee you that if your team is winning,
01:55:19 you would want to see them get the covers off as quickly as possible.
01:55:22 Or similarly, for matches tantalizing to the point that you don't have time to catch the nuts from the nutsman,
01:55:29 seeing a groundsman run on the pitch is an utter turnoff.
01:55:33 We saw them for four matches too much, but next time you see them, be sure to rain on them praise for their efforts.
01:55:42 [music]
01:55:45 Now, we want to encourage you, the fans, to check out the website, cplt20.com,
