00:00 Teenagers across the country are counting down the days until GCSE results this week.
00:06 On the 24th of August, students will be opening their exam results and finding out their grades
00:11 from this year's GCSEs.
00:13 A-level students already received their results last week on the 17th of August.
00:19 And statistics from the Department for Education show 76% achieved a grade C or above.
00:25 We spoke to people in Manchester to find out what advice they would give students for GCSE
00:31 results day.
00:32 Lots of career advice, don't just go for the A-levels that the college want you to do.
00:36 Think about entrance requirements for university and where you see yourself in like five years
00:43 and what you're passionate about rather than what you might be good at because it might
00:47 be more sustainable.
00:48 If you don't get the results you want, just think about what you really want to do and
00:53 maybe just take a year, a gap year and think about what you would be interested in.
00:59 You could do some travelling or I took a gap year once and went travelling around the world
01:04 so I'd recommend that.
01:07 We live in a society where job mobility is very flexible and there's lots of opportunities
01:12 to retrain and you can use previous experience to move forward in different directions and
01:17 things.
01:18 I'd say it's important to try and obviously do your best at school but again, you know,
01:22 there's a lot of sway now towards apprenticeships and such isn't there where it's not as academically
01:25 focused so you get good money being a tradie so plumbing, sparky, chippy, all that kind
01:32 of good stuff.
01:33 I'd say if I had kids now at that age I'd be saying go down that route because you can
01:36 make a good crust and you know, the cost of uni now is like nine grand a year, it's not
01:41 affordable, you're in debt for the next twenty years of your life.
01:44 And also everyone's going to uni now so it doesn't mean as much anymore so I'd focus
01:46 on trades but at the end of the day, you know, your grades are just grades aren't they?
01:50 So you're not, your GCSE results that you are on a paper, they're starting you too much,
01:54 you know what I mean?
01:55 Your life's not defined by a grade on a piece of paper and I think the whole education system
01:58 is ripping up as far as I'm concerned.
02:00 Yeah, definitely go in.
02:01 I know you can get them online these days and you know, it's very easy to access information
02:05 online but I would go in and get your results and talk to teachers because they're there
02:10 to help and support students getting their results and yeah, they're the best people
02:15 to give advice if the grades don't work out the way students want them to.
02:20 Yes, GCSEs, they can be important and A levels but there are so many different vocational
02:25 routes, apprenticeships so you know, definitely look at the different pathways available.
02:31 Results are really difficult.
02:32 You can't help but stress about getting the results when they come out on Thursday and
02:37 the best thing to do is to try and deal with them when they turn up and if you've got any
02:41 real concerns, just go and talk to your teachers about them and also look at the options that
02:45 you've got because it might be that the result's exactly what you wanted but if you haven't
02:50 got the results that you've got, there's lots of options for you and even if you've really
02:54 flunked it, there are lots of ways to sort of resolve that and do better in the long
02:58 term.
02:59 They never know what door's open for them, yeah, so just take it calmly.
