00:00 September 1st. That's when Singaporeans will vote for their ninth president,
00:04 if more than one person qualifies for the position.
00:07 So what happens from now till we go to the polls?
00:10 Here are the important dates leading up to polling day.
00:13 August 11th. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong issues the writ of election.
00:18 The deadline for submitting their certificate of eligibility and a community declaration
00:22 is August 17th. While this presidential election is open to candidates of all races,
00:28 a community declaration is needed to determine when the next reserve election will be.
00:33 The Presidential Elections Committee will screen all hopefuls and inform them of their decision
00:38 by the day before nomination day, which is on August 22nd. Prospective candidates have to file
00:44 their nomination papers and certificates at the Auditorium of the People's Association
00:49 at 9 King George's Avenue. If only one candidate is successfully nominated,
00:54 the returning officer will declare the nominated candidate the president.
00:58 If more than one is successfully nominated, an election must be conducted,
01:03 and that's when campaigning begins. The campaign period starts on nomination day,
01:07 immediately after the conclusion of nomination proceedings, and ends the day before cooling off
01:12 day. Cooling off day is when campaigning is not allowed. This 24-hour campaign silence period,
01:19 a feature of Singapore politics since 2011, is to give voters time to reflect on issues raised
01:24 during the election before going to the polls. Eligible voters can cast their votes between 8am
01:30 and 8pm on September 1st, which is declared a public holiday. Singapore follows the first-past-the-post
01:37 voting system. It means the candidate who receives the most votes wins the election.
01:42 The returning officer will announce the outcome of the poll when vote counting is completed,
01:46 and Singapore gets a new president.
