00:00Hello there, welcome to another episode of Putting Dr. G on the Spot.
00:04In the month of August, we are focusing on various forms of aging-related conditions.
00:10Although the next one we are focusing on is not strictly sexual,
00:15however, it may affect somebody's self-confidence and also how they perceive their own body
00:21when they undergo problems of hair loss.
00:30Hair loss itself is called alloplesia. Alloplesia can happen in men or women
00:35and that itself can cause distress and also lose their sex appeal.
00:40So the so-called crown of glory in the head, what is it controlled by?
00:45In fact, it's controlled by three things. Number one is genetic.
00:50So somebody who has got alloplesia due to genetic conditions,
00:54basically, you have got male pattern boners that is perhaps hereditary from your family.
01:01So these individuals may actually start going through the problem of hair loss
01:06early in their teens or much earlier in their youth.
01:11And then so that itself is usually genetically orientated with the influence of hormone.
01:18So that brings us to the second problem, which the hormone.
01:21Hormone itself is very important in the hair growth.
01:25Hair growth come in three stages.
01:27The first stage is the actual growth itself.
01:30Second stage is transition.
01:32Third stage is resting.
01:34In fact, when you're younger, your hormone level is stronger
01:37and we want it to be more in a growth phase.
01:41However, when someone is getting older,
01:43then the actual resting phase is prolonged
01:46and the hair becomes quite fragile.
01:49Now, melanocyte disappears and you get graying of the hair.
01:53And that's what's happening if mostly men.
01:56As men get older, their testosterone levels start dropping.
01:59When the overall testosterone drops,
02:02the active component of the testosterone called dihydrotestosterone get depressed.
02:08As a result of that, they will start getting problems with actual, the hair growth lost.
02:15And when you have that situation, then there are multiple medications that can help you.
02:21That brings us to the third condition that causes hair loss.
02:25That actually is poor health.
02:27When somebody has got poor overall health, especially cardiothoracic health,
02:32you've got diabetes, it's got hypertension and high cholesterol.
02:37When your overall health is affected, the hair growth is also affected.
02:41In addition to that, when you have these conditions, you're also taking some medication.
02:46For example, anti-diabetic medication may cause some sparsing of the hair.
02:51When this occurs in women, there are other medical conditions.
02:55For example, hair loss is associated with menopause.
02:59When menopause occurs, the protections of hair growth in estrogen decreases
03:03and therefore you get thinning of the hair.
03:06But the pattern is slightly different compared to men
03:09because it is more spaced out and it's more of spacing of the thinning of the hair
03:15and also they get quite fragile.
03:17After washing vigorously, they actually lose the hair and never regrowth.
03:22So, in summary, the hair is protected by both genes,
03:27hormone that controls mainly sex hormone and also your overall health.
03:32From a full luscious hair with a crown of glory,
03:36we're dealing with another glory which is the morning glory.
03:40You need to stay tuned for next week's Putting Dr. G on the Spot.
