There is a new mas band in town - Spirit Mas - and its band leader says it is ready to be on the road in Carnival 2024.

Adrian Scoon says that the band vision is to take some of the traditional art that Trinidad has and bring it to a more palatable, contemporary space.

Speaking after the mas band's first band launch, he also says that the band's concept of a brunch is what he calls a a functional solution to Carnival Monday.

Juhel Browne reports.

00:03 Spirit Mass displayed its intention to breathe new fire
00:06 into mass on the road with its inaugural band launch
00:10 at Drew Manor for its presentation for Carnival 2024.
00:14 [drumming]
00:16 The new mass band's launch was its own rhythm
00:19 of modern mass costumes and elements of traditional carnival
00:23 such as the iconic Tantan and Saga Boy.
00:26 So will that be the band's presentation on the road
00:29 in 2024?
00:31 TV6 News posed that question to Spirit Mass' band leader,
00:36 Adrian Schoon, during a media interview.
00:39 - You know, our intention, our vision is to take some
00:42 of the traditional art of Detroit art has
00:45 and actually bring it to a more palatable,
00:48 you know, contemporary space.
00:49 But our goal is really to just bring national interest
00:52 back to mass.
00:53 You know, we feel that mass has been commercialized
00:55 a little bit and the families don't come out
00:57 to Port of Speed enough.
00:58 [upbeat music]
01:02 - And the new mass band is planning a new concept
01:05 for Carnival Monday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
01:08 - The brunch boy!
01:09 [laughing]
01:10 - I mean, I mean, the brunch definitely is, you know,
01:13 very disruptive in a positive way,
01:16 but it's a functional solution to Carnival Monday.
01:18 And we're definitely looking up some great caterers,
01:21 some local caterers to show the world exactly what we have
01:25 in terms of food, cuisine, let's park where we know
01:28 where the band is and we can leave together
01:29 and go nonstop.
01:31 We're not stopping after the brunch.
01:32 We're really excited about that.
01:33 [upbeat music]
01:35 - Of course, a band launch at a venue such as Drew Manor
01:38 is not the same as Carnival on the road.
01:41 So is Spirit Mass ready for 2024?
01:44 - Oh, we are ready.
01:45 - However, Mr. Scoon says not with anywhere close
01:49 to 7,000 masqueraders.
01:51 - We're gonna manage that.
01:52 We're gonna pay attention to detail and customer service.
01:55 How we work is we work with the customer first
01:58 and work our way backwards.
01:59 - So is Spirit Mass seeking to appeal to those
02:02 looking for a new home in Mass in 2024?
02:05 - We respect all the other bands
02:07 because they bring their own vibe to the road,
02:10 but we think we have something different to offer people.
02:13 And we want everybody to survive in the ecosystem
02:15 because competition is the best thing for the consumer.
