00:00 The cost of living crisis is still affecting millions of people across the UK.
00:04 Statistics from the Department for Work and Pension shows around 1 in 5 people in the
00:10 UK were in relative low income after housing costs in the year 2021-2022.
00:17 As a result, less households are spending money on non-essentials such as clothing and
00:21 summer holidays, as disposable income is down and people are making more conscious financial
00:26 decisions.
00:27 We spoke to people in Manchester to find out what they're going without during the cost
00:32 of living crisis and whether they are still booking holidays.
00:35 "No, I'm spending more on everything.
00:38 And I do feel, whether I should say this or not, some supermarkets are profiteering.
00:44 Because when you go in, you know, you can understand the cost of living, you need to
00:49 pay a little bit more, but some of them are putting like pounds on, which really isn't
00:54 necessary."
00:55 "There is a lot of things I'm not spending money on that I would have before and I'm
00:58 being a lot more careful about, you know, when I do the food shopping, what I'm buying
01:02 and what I'm not.
01:03 There's not so many luxuries as there used to be because the cost of a lot of the basic
01:08 stuff like pasta, rice, vegetables, just gone crazy."
01:13 "But less clothes, probably go out less, probably eat at home more, don't eat out as much, definitely
01:22 no takeaways or treats anymore like that.
01:25 I think we're just more careful, just in general, just making sure that we shop at Aldi rather
01:29 than, you know, Tesco, making sure that we do things like that.
01:32 What have we not had?
01:33 Small holidays, anything that's like a luxury.
01:36 So things like that that we've cut down on, if we're buying something, we make sure that
01:39 we do it in a sale."
01:40 "The cost of holidays, from what it was last year to what it is this year, unbelievable.
01:47 The cost, even for a basic holiday in just somewhere like Spain, £800, £900, which
01:53 is a lot more than I thought it was going to be.
01:56 But yes, we will be having a holiday next year, but we will be going careful."
02:00 "I'm nearly 60, so if I've got money in my pocket at the moment, I wouldn't go into debt.
02:05 But if I've got stuff, I need to try and do stuff while I'm still fit and able to do it.
02:08 So if I wait until I'm 70 or 80, there's no point in waiting until then because, well,
02:13 I wouldn't enjoy it.
02:14 I could be, it's not quite the same going somewhere nice with a Zimmer frame, is it?"
02:17 "We're not going away this year because of it.
02:19 Because we're teachers, so we definitely can't afford to."
02:23 "I wouldn't say things like holidays, just because it's something that we factor in and
02:27 save up for.
02:28 So you've got to factor in the type of holiday you go on.
02:31 But new summer clothes, for example, like packing for your holiday, I'm kind of looking
02:34 at what I've already got, rather than going out and buying a whole new wardrobe for it,
02:38 just because I've got to think about that I don't necessarily have the extra cash to
02:41 go and do that anymore."
02:42 "No, I'd rather spend less on non-essentials like clothes and items that you don't like,
02:51 going out for a coffee.
02:53 I'd rather save up my money and go on holiday, really.
02:55 So it's quite the reverse, really.
02:56 I think you want to get to the sun and to be able to go and relax somewhere where you
03:01 know you've got guaranteed weather."
