Following the adoption of safeguard measures adopted in March that effect 32% of Ecuador's imports, civil society has formed more than 600 consumer committees to combat price speculation by large chains or family owned businesses. The watchdog committees act as the eyes and ears of the authorities in detecting such practices. Through such initiatives Ecuadoran society is working to defend its economy and promote national production. Liz Scherffius reports from Quito. teleSUR
