Hello, my name is Justin and in this video, we will learn different ways to apologize in English and how to react to those apologies. Apologizing is very important as it can sometimes defuse conflict and it's also seen as something polite and respectful to do.
• I apologize for: The most common expression. There are also different variants like "I must apologize for" or "I'd like to apologize for", but it keeps the core in all cases.
• I'm sorry for: Another common expression, mostly spoken and less formal than the "I apologize for".
• I shouldn't have: A useful apology for a deed you did.
• I'm ashamed of: A good way to start an apology, involves the feeling of shame, but will usually include something else.
• Please forgive me: A good way to "close" and apology. You can start with "I'm ashamed of stealing your bread. Please forgive me." That way, you involve the feeling of shame and ask for forgiveness.
How do you answer the apologies? It will depend on the severity of the action and you feel, but it can range from "It doesn't matter" if it's not important to "I accept your apologies" if it's an important slight you forgave. Of course, you can also choose not to forgive the other person and avoid answering altogether.
