00:00If you've got a question and you don't know where to go, ask Nina for some help, cause she's got a science show.
00:11She makes sense of her senses while helping all her fans, by doing her experiments with potions and with bags.
00:17Touch her tongue, fingers, eyes, ears, ears, nose.
00:23Nina and the neurons find out what you need to know.
00:26Nina and the neurons find out what you need to know.
00:29Look, he helps us with our eyes and Felix with our touch.
00:32Ollie sniffs our smells and sounds and bells she hears so much.
00:35But it's Ollie's brother, he helps us with our taste.
00:38And Nina's little neurons and they're coming to your place.
00:41Touch her tongue, fingers, eyes, ears, nose.
00:47Nina and the neurons find out what you need to know.
00:50Nina and the neurons find out what you need to know.
00:53Oh yeah!
00:54Oh hello!
00:59It was my birthday yesterday and I had such a lovely time with balloons and presents and this beautiful birthday cake.
01:07But I think I should have blown the candles out a bit quicker.
01:09I spent so long making a wish that the candle wax melted onto the cake.
01:14I hear a beep, I see a flash.
01:20I wonder what they're going to ask.
01:27Hi Nina!
01:30Hi guys!
01:31We've got a question for you.
01:33What is earwax for?
01:34That's a great question.
01:37What is earwax for?
01:38Our brilliant bodies do make a kind of wax in our ears.
01:42But what is it doing there?
01:44Why don't you come down to my lab and we'll do some experiments to investigate.
01:48See you soon, Nina.
01:50Bye!
01:52Well I'm going to need some help to answer this one and I know just who to ask.
01:56Okay neurons, time to get to work.
01:58Okay, today's question is what is earwax for?
02:22Now which neuron do you think will be most useful in helping us find the answer?
02:25Me!
02:26Me!
02:26Me!
02:27Me!
02:27Me!
02:28Will it be Fabulous Felix?
02:31I can help so very much if you need the sense of touch.
02:34Will it be Beautiful Belle?
02:37I send messages to Brain from ear.
02:39If there's a sound, I'll help you hear.
02:41Will it be Lovely Look?
02:43For looking and seeing, day or night, I'll help you with your sense of sight.
02:47Will it be Awesome Ollie?
02:50If it's Pony or Whiffy, but you can't tell, my messages help your sense of smell.
02:54Or will it be Baby Bud?
02:56Sour, salty, bitter or sweet, I'm your taste buddy whenever you eat.
03:05It's Belle!
03:07Yes!
03:08Go Belle, go Belle, go Belle, go Belle, go Belle, go Belle, go Belle.
03:15Brilliant!
03:15I'm all ears, Nina.
03:19Today's question is what is earwax for?
03:21And because it's all about our ears, Belle will be helping us today.
03:25But stand by, neurons, I have a feeling I may need help from all of you.
03:28Right, I need to get the lab ready before the experimenters arrive.
03:31Evie likes riding her bike, Josh likes painting and Xanthi loves jam sandwiches.
03:38But they all want to know what earwax is for.
03:41So today, for one day only, Evie, Josh and Xanthi become the experimenters!
03:49Hi guys!
03:51Hi Nina!
03:53Oh, welcome to my science lab.
03:54Come in!
03:57Now your question is, what is earwax for?
04:00Which is a great question, but why do you want to know?
04:03It's a bit strange having waxed in our ears.
04:06Why is it there?
04:07Yes, it does seem a funny thing for our brilliant bodies to make.
04:11But remember, we should never put our fingers in our ears to feel it.
04:15No, that would make our ears very sore.
04:20It certainly would, Belle.
04:21But earwax must be there for some reason.
04:25So I think we need to do some investigating to find out more.
04:27And for our first experiment, we're going to use our senses.
04:30Whoop-whoop! A senses experiment!
04:34We're ready, Nina!
04:36There are lots of different types of wax in the world.
04:39Now these candles are made of a type of wax.
04:42So let's touch them and tell me what they feel like.
04:47Hard.
04:48Smooth.
04:50They feel sort of slippery and greasy.
04:54Greasy? That's just what they feel like.
04:57Okay, now pop your finger in there.
04:59What does that feel like?
05:01Gooey.
05:03Slimy.
05:04Well, this is called styling wax.
05:06Hey, and you're right.
05:07It is gooey and slimy.
05:09So we know that wax can be hard and greasy.
05:13And it can be soft, like this styling wax.
05:16Oh, who recognizes these?
05:18Crayon crayons.
05:19It's a crayon, that's right.
05:21So crayons are made of a type of wax too.
05:23I'd like you to pick a crayon and colour in your shapes.
05:39Well done, guys.
05:41That was some great colouring in.
05:42Now, what does the crayon on the paper look like?
05:46Colourful and shiny.
05:47Yes, and it's also waterproof.
05:50What does waterproof mean?
05:52Well, it means that it keeps water out.
05:55Let me show you.
05:56Now, I've got a dropper here with some water in it.
05:59I'm going to put it onto this sheet of paper.
06:01Oh, it's getting all wet.
06:08The water is soaking into the paper and making it really wet.
06:12Now, why don't you try putting some water onto your crayon pictures?
06:18And squeeze.
06:21So what can you see?
06:22The water is sitting on top of the wax.
06:26Yes, so we know that wax can be hard and greasy and soft and squidgy and it's waterproof.
06:34But we still don't know why we have wax in our ears.
06:37So I think for our next experiment, we need to go in search of some Rub-A-Dub-Dub.
06:42Let's go, experimenters.
06:44Yeah!
06:48Off we go for another adventure.
06:50But what does Nina mean by Rub-A-Dub-Dub?
06:53Look! Horses!
06:56Maybe they need some Rub-A-Dub-Dub, Luke.
06:58No, you don't rub horses, Bud.
07:01You brush them.
07:03Sharpen your senses, neurons.
07:05I have a feeling that this will be fun.
07:20Hello, officers.
07:21Hello, Nina.
07:22Police men and women who ride horses are called mounted police.
07:27And there are lots of police horses here at these stables.
07:30But do you have any idea why I've brought you here?
07:33No, Nina.
07:34Well, if you follow me, I'll show you.
07:37This way.
07:40Oh, I just love it here.
07:42Those horses make lovely, neighing, snorty noises.
07:46These are the saddles and bridles the mounted police use in their work.
07:54And they're all made of shiny leather.
07:57What does it feel like?
08:00Smooth and soft.
08:02Yes, it is.
08:04It's lovely and soft.
08:05But look at this one.
08:07This saddle doesn't look quite so good, does it?
08:16And it feels different, too.
08:20It feels hard and rough.
08:21Yeah, that's because the leather is cracked and dry.
08:26I need some looking after.
08:27And I have just the thing here.
08:29This is beeswax.
08:32It's a type of wax made by bees.
08:36It smells wonderful.
08:38The more wax we put on the leather, the softer and shinier it will become.
08:43And the wax will also protect the saddle from the rain.
08:46Because, as we discovered earlier, wax is waterproof.
08:50So come on, experimenters.
08:51It's time for some Rub-A-Dub-Dub.
08:53There, that's looking great.
09:08And it's feeling soft, too.
09:11Well done.
09:12But, Nina, what's this got to do with our ears?
09:16Well, Xanthi, though we can't see it, there is skin right inside our ears,
09:20which must be kept nice and soft, just like this leather saddle.
09:25And that's what our earwax does.
09:27It softens the skin inside our ears and stops it getting itchy and sore.
09:32But there's one more thing wax does to protect us.
09:36Let's go back to the lab for one final experiment.
09:39Yay!
09:42OK, now here I have a big model of an ear.
09:46And this part is called the oracle.
09:49Lotticle!
09:50Oracle bud.
09:52It's the part of the ear we can see.
09:54And the part inside is called the ear canal.
09:59And that's where the earwax is made.
10:01We're going to pretend that these cones are our ears.
10:04And you guys are going to put some of that sticky stuff
10:08all around the inside of that cone.
10:10Go for it!
10:11Oh, excellent!
10:24Nice and sticky.
10:26And this is like the wax inside our ears.
10:29What about another cone?
10:30Oh, well, we're going to leave that one as it is.
10:34It's like an ear with no wax.
10:36Now, we have shakers here with glittery bits in that we're going to sprinkle onto the inside of the cones.
10:44Now, these are like bits of dust and dirt that can get into our ears from the air around us.
10:50Remember, you should never put anything in your ear as it might damage it.
10:56That's right, Belle, we must never put anything into our real ears.
11:01Okay, one, two, three, get shaking!
11:04Okay, we can stop sprinkling.
11:14Let's have a look.
11:15So, which one of our pretend ears do you think has the most glittery bits in the bottom?
11:20This one.
11:21The dry cone with no sticky stuff around the inside has definitely got more glittery bits down in the bottom.
11:28And why do you think that is?
11:30Because there was nothing stuffing going down.
11:33That's right, the sticky stuff on the other cone trapped all the glittery bits and stopped it from going down into the bottom.
11:42What happens to the dirty wax, Nina?
11:45Well, actually, our ears have a really clever way of moving old wax, along with the trapped dirt, out of our ears,
11:53so they can be washed away in a bath or a shower.
11:55Your question was, what is earwax for?
12:04And I think we've answered it.
12:05Earwax is a shiny, sticky substance that is made inside our ears.
12:10It keeps the skin inside our ears soft and healthy, and it also traps the dirt and dust that could be bad for our ears and helps our body to get rid of it.
12:20But remember, we must never put anything inside our ears because they don't like it.
12:26And thanks to our clever earwax, our brilliant ears are really good at looking after themselves.
12:31So I hope that's answered your question.
12:34Thanks, Nina. Bye!
12:37Bye!
12:37If you want to find out more about the science that's all around us, go to the Nina section on the CBB's website.
12:48Have fun!
12:49Heart's beating.
12:50Lungs breathing.
12:51Fingers feeling.
12:53Mouth eating.
12:54And don't forget your brain.
12:56Brilliant bodies, brilliant bodies.
12:59Inside of our, our, our.
13:01Brilliant bodies, brilliant bodies.
13:03Come on, let's play loud about our handy hands and bendy knees.
13:09Stretch your backs and noises like the sneeze.
13:11We all have brilliant bodies.
13:14Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant bodies.
13:17Every part has a job to do.
13:20Even scabs and earwax too.
13:22We all have brilliant bodies.
13:25Brilliant bodies, brilliant bodies.
13:30Lashes to protect our eyes.
13:32Brilliant bodies, brilliant bodies.
13:35And don't forget to exercise.
13:39It's been a marvellous day.
13:41We've discovered that wax can be hard and shiny and soft and squishy too.
13:47I really enjoyed myself today.
13:49The smell of all those polished leather saddles was brilliant.
13:53Ah, it's been such a great day, man.
13:57I just loved seeing all that shiny glitter.
14:00And remember, everyone's body is different, but they're all brilliant.
14:03See you again soon.
14:05Bye.
14:06Bye.
14:06Bye.
14:06Bye.
14:08Nina and the new boy.
14:11Brilliant bodies.
