00:05If you've got a question and you don't know where to go,
00:08ask Nina for some help, cause she's got a science show.
00:11She makes sense of her senses while helping all her fans
00:14by using her experiments with potions and with bags.
00:17Touch her tongue, fingers, eyes, ears, nose.
00:23Nina and the neurons find out what you need to know.
00:26Nina and the neurons find out what you need to know.
00:29Look, she helps us with her eyes and Felix with our touch.
00:32Ollie sniffs our snows and some bells she hears so much.
00:35But it's Ollie's brother, he helps us with our taste.
00:38Then he does little neurons and they're coming to your place.
00:41Touch her tongue, fingers, eyes, ears, nose.
00:47Nina and the neurons find out what you need to know.
00:50Nina and the neurons find out what you need to know.
00:53Oh, yeah.
00:55Oh, hello there. I'm just moving Mr Skeleton.
00:59Did you know that the human body has more than 200 bones in it?
01:03That's a lot of bones to look after.
01:05So gently does it.
01:07There.
01:08Oh, I hear a beep. I see a flash.
01:11I wonder what they're going to ask.
01:17Hi, Nina.
01:18Hello.
01:19We've got a question for you.
01:22How do broken bones get better?
01:25That's a great question.
01:26How do broken bones get better?
01:28I'd love to know the answer to that.
01:30And so would Mr Skeleton.
01:32Why don't you come down to my lab and we'll do some experiments to investigate.
01:36See you soon, Nina.
01:38Bye.
01:40Well, I'm going to need some help to answer this one
01:42and I know just who to ask.
01:44OK, neurons.
01:45Time to get to work.
02:07OK, today's question is how do broken bones get better?
02:11Now, which neuron do you think will be most useful in helping us find the answer?
02:14Me, me, me, me.
02:17Will it be Fabulous Felix?
02:19I can help so very much if you need the sense of touch.
02:23Will it be Beautiful Belle?
02:25I send messages to Brain from ear.
02:28If there's a sound, I'll help you hear.
02:30Will it be Lovely Look?
02:32For looking and seeing, day or night, I'll help you with your sense of sight.
02:36Will it be Awesome Ollie?
02:38If it's Pony or Whiffy, but you can't tell, my messages help your sense of smell.
02:43Or will it be Baby Bud?
02:45Sour, salty, bitter or sweet?
02:48I'm your taste buddy whenever you eat.
02:53It's Felix!
02:57Go Felix!
02:58Go Felix!
02:59Go Felix!
03:01Go Felix!
03:02Go Felix!
03:03Go Felix!
03:04Go Felix!
03:05Go Felix!
03:05A little touch can mean so much, Nina.
03:10Today's question is how do broken bones get better?
03:13Because we can feel if a bone is broken, Felix our touch neuron will be helping me today.
03:18Right!
03:18I need to get the lab ready before the experimenters arrive.
03:23Jack likes pirates and Say likes planting seeds but they both want to know how broken bones get
03:30better so today for one day only Jack and Say become the experimenters. Hi guys. Hi Nina. Oh
03:41welcome to my science lab it's lovely to see you. Now your question was how do broken bones get
03:47better which is a great question but why do you want to know because my cousin broke his arm but
03:53now it's better and we want to know how it got better oh I'm glad your cousin's okay but I
03:59think
03:59we need to do some investigating to find out more about bones and for our first experiment we're
04:04going to use our senses each of us has hundreds of bones inside us just like mr. skeleton and all
04:17of these bones inside of us help us to stand up straight and and get around and move objects the
04:25bones in mr. skeletons chest look just like a cage yes look and that's because some bones like our
04:33ribs are there to protect soft parts of our body now I have some pretend bones here now I'd like
04:39you guys to use your sense of sight to match them to bones on mr. skeleton can you do that
04:46yeah you're
04:54right it's right it's a thigh bone very good okay Jack do you want to have a try on your
05:00bones
05:05oh well done that was very quick excellent that's the hip bone very good okay so your turn again
05:19oh that's right it's a kneecap well done oh the last one where do you think it goes
05:29I think it's one of them that's right it's our calf bone super work guys now I would like you
05:38to use
05:39your sense of touch to describe how the bones feel so pick up a bone now does it feel hard
05:46or bendy
05:47they're hard yeah the bones feel really hard and strong don't they in fact to prove it listen oh
05:55sounds hard to me Nina it is Belle so bones are very hard and strong and that's because of something
06:03called calcium if bones didn't have calcium in them they'd be all bendy ooh like this toy bone
06:12now do you think it'd be a good thing or a bad thing to have bendy rubbery bones we need
06:20hard
06:21strong bones so we can stand up and move around and we get calcium from eating foods like fruit and
06:28vegetables and cheese and milk so it's important to eat plenty of calcium foods yes I love those
06:35foods glad to hear it bud but we still don't know how broken bones get better to find out more
06:42we need
06:43to visit a place where people work with bones all the time so let's go I wonder when Nina is
06:53taking us
06:54Nina said it's a place where people work with bones all the time better sharpen your senses neurons we're
07:01here okay experimenters I've brought you to this local hospital to learn more about how broken bones
07:10get better and this is just the person to help us dr. Jones hello Nina hello experimenter dr. Jones what
07:17can
07:17you tell us about our bones bones are amazing they are one of the strongest things in nature but
07:23sometimes they still break yes even though our bones are very strong they can sometimes break if
07:29we have an accident like falling off our bike but don't worry it doesn't happen very often and when
07:34people break a bone they come to a hospital like this to get it fixed this picture is called an
07:40x-ray
07:41which shows us the bones inside our bodies you can see where this bone has broken we call that a
07:47fracture a watcher a fracture bud a break in a bone is called a fracture okay experimenters let's see if
07:56we can spot a fracture on a different x-ray can you see where it is guys yes Nina there
08:04is that's
08:06right thanks dr. Jones you're welcome Nina bye bye so we've learned that bones are strong but can break
08:14if we have an accident or fall over and when a bone breaks it's called a fracture do you see
08:23what that
08:23lady has on her arm my cousin had one of those it's called a cast when someone has a fracture
08:30a doctor
08:31often puts a cast around the outside of the broken bone to help it get better excuse me do you
08:37mind
08:37if we touch your cast okay Nina let's have a wee feel feels very hard to me Nina that's right
08:46Felix but
08:47how does this hard cast help a broken bone to get better I've got another experiment back at the lab
08:53that will help us find out let's go yay okay now in front of you there we have three pretend
09:03bones but
09:04as you can see they're all broken into two pieces now experimenters I'd like you to help me put these
09:09bones back together so let's see if we can make them match okay find the match do they match no
09:19oh do those match yay excellent well you hold on to that one hold it carefully in the middle let's
09:27see what we can do do you want to hold them up do they look like they match yay so
09:33must be these ones
09:38hey excellent work guys now when a real bone breaks the two pieces need to fit back together
09:44perfectly for the bone to heal properly and healing means when something gets all better again but
09:50how do your bones get better Nina well our bodies make a special substance that's a bit like this glue
09:59and it sticks the bones back together again when they've been broken in fact why don't we put some glue
10:05on the jaggy ends of our bones and see if we can stick them together okay
10:17so when broken bones start sticking back together it's calcium that helps make the bone grow hard
10:24again and that means they can grow nice and strong so they're as good as new okay how are you
10:31getting on
10:31guys i'm going to try and put mine together now fantastic but for the pieces to stick together we need
10:40the glue to become hard which is called setting that only happens properly when the pieces stay
10:46perfectly still and that's the same with broken bones that's like the cast we touched at the hospital
10:55nina yes it is felix a cast holds a broken bone perfectly still while the fracture sets and we are
11:02going to make our very own cast okay take a strip of this wet special material great now we're going
11:11to
11:11wrap it tightly around our fracture
11:20this is going to dry really quickly setting hard there our hard cast is helping our pretend bones to stay
11:33still while they're sticking back together so your question was how do broken bones get better
11:43and i think we've answered it we found out that bones are very hard and strong because of something
11:49called calcium we get calcium from foods like fruit and vegetables and cheese and milk and if a bone
11:55breaks it's called a fracture and a doctor uses a special x-ray photograph to see the fracture
12:01and then put a cast around the outside of the broken bone that keeps the bone straight and still
12:08this helps the bone join back together which is called setting and our bodies make a special substance
12:15that's a bit like glue that helps the bone stick back together then calcium makes the bone nice and
12:22strong again as good as new so i hope that's answered your question thanks nina bye bye
12:34if you want to find out more about the science that's all around us go to the
12:38nina section on the cpp's website have fun hearts beating lungs breathing fingers feeling
12:45melt it and don't forget your brain brilliant bodies brilliant bodies
12:51inside of ah ah ah brilliant bodies brilliant bodies come on let's my ladder burn our handy hands and bendy
13:01knees
13:02stretch your legs stretch your legs stretch your backs and noises that sneeze we all have brilliant bodies
13:07brilliant bodies every part has a job to do even scabs and earwax too we all have brilliant bodies
13:17brilliant bodies brilliant bodies brilliant bodies
13:27and don't forget to exercise oh i've had a brilliant day especially hearing how hard the bone was
13:36because of calcium ah it's been such a great dear man seeing the broken bones in the x-ray pictures
13:45was amazing it's been a marvelous day that cast felt really hard the bones should stick back together
13:52in no time and remember everyone's body is different but they're all brilliant see you again soon bye
13:59bye
