00:00Coming up on Lloyd and Mandy.
00:02Just saw the Prime Minister, it's pretty cool.
00:25In today's episode of Lloyd and Mandy, we're celebrating
00:28our first ever Songkran festival here in Thailand.
00:32Songkran is the Thai New Year's national holiday, and is celebrated
00:36on 13th of April every year, but the holiday period generally
00:40extends over 3 main days from the 13th till the 15th of April.
00:45However, in 2018, the Thai government extended
00:48the festival nationwide to 7 days, from the 9th till
00:52the 16th of April, to enable citizens to travel home for the holiday
00:56which is pretty cool.
00:58The word Songkran is an ancient
01:00Southeast Asian word literally meaning
01:02astrological passage,
01:04transformation, or change.
01:06It coincides with the rising of
01:08Aries on the astrological
01:10chart, and with the New Year of many
01:12calendars of Southeast Asia,
01:14in keeping with the Buddhist and Hindu
01:16calendar. The New Year
01:18takes place at around the same time as
01:20the New Year celebrations of many regions of
01:22South Asia, such as
01:24China, India, Laos,
01:26Cambodia, Myanmar, Nepal,
01:29and Sri Lanka. However,
01:30for many people, especially tourists,
01:33celebrations are famous for
01:34the public water fights, framed
01:36as ritual cleansing. This
01:38has become extremely popular among
01:40both locals and foreigners,
01:42and in some cities such as Bangkok
01:44and Pattaya, the public water fights
01:46can last as long as two weeks.
01:49Today, we're going to be celebrating
01:51here at our new home in
01:52Hua Hin, to see what all the fuss
01:54is about, and see if we can join
01:56in on some of the festivities, and
01:58maybe win a couple of water fights ourselves.
02:12Alright,
02:13before we go and see
02:14what's happening for Songkran, we're going to
02:16go and get some weapons, I think.
02:19We can't be walking
02:20around unarmed.
02:24So excited, I'm going to get the biggest one
02:26I can find. Yeah, we're going to
02:28try and get some Super Soaker
02:30water pistols, or water guns,
02:33and then we're going to have a
02:34drive around and see what's happening
02:35for the festival.
02:37We did hear that maybe
02:39some of the festivities were
02:40called off because of a water
02:42shortage here in Hua Hin.
02:43So hopefully that's not the case.
02:46But I guess we'll check it out
02:48and see what's going on.
02:50This is our first time doing Songkran,
02:52or Songkran, however you pronounce it.
02:56Songkran.
02:57Songkran.
02:57So we're really excited.
02:59It looks like a huge party.
03:01It looks absolutely insane.
03:29Alright, we've just arrived at Rocket Village.
03:31We're going to keep going and find
03:31me.
03:32We're going to keep going.
03:33So busy.
03:34The streets are packed.
03:36I'm already soaked.
03:37That escalated so much quicker
03:38than I thought it was going to.
04:02They're ready.
04:14That's the one?
04:16It looks great.
04:17I saw this one.
04:18That looks great.
04:20I swear it now.
04:22Yeah.
04:23Okay.
04:34I like these.
04:37Yeah?
04:42Look how cool are those?
04:45Alright, we've got shirts and sunnies, now we're going to head to a stand to try and
04:50find some guns.
04:53We just need to take a quick break to give a huge shout out to Olifly for sponsoring
05:03our video today but also for making our travels over the last two years just so much easier.
05:08If you've never heard of Olifly, they provide international eSIM cards to over 190 countries
05:14all over the world so you can travel and use the internet without worrying about expensive
05:19roaming fees.
05:20So usually the trouble we would come into is when we went from one country to another
05:25we'd have to go and buy either a new SIM card or a new Olifly eSIM.
05:30And just speaking from personal experience because we've done so much travel, there's
05:35literally nothing more frustrating than landing in a new destination and having to spend the
05:40first few hours trying to navigate taxis and hotels and where to get the best food without
05:46having any data on your phone.
05:48Now that we're basing ourselves in Thailand and we're travelling around Asia, we're using
05:52just one eSIM for all of our travels and that's the Asia 30 day unlimited eSIM, which means
05:58we can travel from Thailand to Vietnam and we literally don't have to do anything, our
06:03eSIM keeps working.
06:04In fact you can even keep your own SIM card active while using Olifly so you can continue
06:09receiving phone calls and text messages.
06:11However, just a quick service announcement, if you're interested in purchasing an Olifly eSIM,
06:16make sure you head over to their website first to check that your phone is compatible with
06:21their SIM cards, although most models are.
06:23And if you'd like to purchase an eSIM today for your next travel adventure, simply click
06:28the link down below but don't forget to use code LloydAndMandy and you'll receive 5% off
06:32at checkout.
06:47That's it.
07:04hi
07:04hi
07:06hi
07:07hi
07:07hi
07:08hi
07:08hi
07:08hi
07:08hi
07:09hi
07:09hi
07:34Oh, that's nice, man.
07:39It's supposed to be...
07:42How much water?
07:46It's not that warm on home.
07:48Yeah.
07:50We're getting two, yeah?
07:51Yeah.
08:26Just saw the Prime Minister, pretty cool.
09:40Oh, there's definitely no ban on Songkran this year.
09:43It is up to inventors.
09:44We're heading down to Soy 80, which is pretty much the main walking street in Wahin.
09:50We drove past it, looks like he's going absolutely crazy.
09:54He's broke already, isn't he?
10:00Sorry, guys.
10:02Oh, my.
10:20Oh, fuck.
10:22Oh, fuck.
10:26oh literally everyone's just pouring buckets of water on us
11:02I'm like at war with people, it's getting like personal now
11:09alright hopefully you can see it, the camera is soaking wet and hopefully you can see it as well
11:16we're just taking a break from the craziness, having a drink and gonna ambush some people
11:23non-stop, like absolutely every five meters you're walking on water dumping
11:30hopefully we don't get pink eye tomorrow
11:33it's so much fun, it's definitely my favorite holiday that we've got to participate in like anywhere
11:53that's the move, next year we're hiring a year
11:56we're gonna get like 10 kids in the back, two big tubs of water and just smash everyone
12:04we got got
12:07I don't even know what it is, what is it?
12:11I don't really want to think about it
12:12it might be baby powder mixed with something
12:16I'm not really sure
12:18some of them look a little more questionable
12:21I saw them mixing up water
12:22I love how everyone's participating, no one's like
12:35even the grab drivers are walking around with fucking pistols
12:41there's people just trying to get home from work
12:45getting smashed with water
13:06we're just gonna try to get our lunch before someone soaks it with a water pistol
13:15we're just gonna try to get our lunch before somebody soaks it with a water pistol
13:26There's literally three-year-olds and 70-year-olds doing the same thing today.
13:52Oh that's it. Songkran's done. It was so much fun. My new favorite holiday, we're gonna come do it every
14:00year.
14:01You definitely don't have to be in Bangkok or Pattaya to do Songkran. I actually didn't think there was gonna
14:07be anything going on here, but it was insane.
14:09We've been going for two days as well. Every single person in town was out. It was so much fun.
14:17Yeah, it was like five-year-old kids and 70-year-old women and men doing the same thing.
14:25Just spraying each other with water, having fun, dancing. Good vibe. So good.
14:32Definitely recommend coming for Songkran if you are able to any time in the future.
14:37Such a fun experience. Thank you guys so much for watching.
