00:44This is turning into, like, a laughably ridiculous situation.

03:33to the Land Transport Office
03:35to go and get my
03:37Thai driver's license.
03:39So I'm getting, hopefully today,
03:42my car license
03:43and my motorbike license
03:45at the same time.
03:47And the reason I'm doing that
03:49is because obviously,
03:50I mean, we're living in Thailand now.
03:53So I want to have a legitimate
03:55Thai license for insurance purposes,
03:59in case I get pulled over by the police.
04:01I don't want to be asked any questions.
04:04If anything happens
04:05and I get into an accident,
04:06I just want to hand over my Thai license
04:09and my insurance card
04:10and there'll be no questions asked, hopefully.
04:13So there's actually about a 35,
04:1540-minute drive from Hua Hin,
04:18where we're living to the Transport Office,
04:21which is in Cha-Am.
04:23I figured while I'm driving there,
04:25I might give you guys the rundown
04:28on how to go about getting your
04:30either motorbike license
04:31or driver's license,
04:33depending on what you're trying to get.
04:35This applies to anyone
04:37who doesn't have
04:38the valid license for back home.
04:42So if you have a motorbike license already
04:45from Australia, USA, UK,
04:49whatever it is,
04:50the process is a little bit different,
04:52a little bit easier,
04:54but basically the gist is the same.
04:57You have to go to the Land Transport Office,
04:59you have to bring some documents in,
05:01do a couple of tests
05:03and you can swap your license over.
05:06But for me,
05:07I did not have a full motorbike license.
05:11I had a learner's license in Australia,
05:13which is a bit different.
05:15Can't ride with passengers,
05:17can't go over a certain speed.
05:18Therefore, I couldn't just get my
05:21tire driver's license
05:22by exchanging my Australian one.
05:24And for my Australian car license,
05:27unfortunately,
05:28because I've lived away for so long,
05:30I've been doing my license renewals online
05:34for like, honestly,
05:35eight years or something like that.
05:37This year,
05:38they finally said,
05:39you can't do it online,
05:40you're going to have to come in
05:41and take a new photo,
05:43which obviously,
05:43I'm not going to fly back to Australia
05:45to take a new photo
05:46just to get my
05:49Australian driver's license.
05:50So I opted to say,
05:53screw it,
05:54I'm just going to go for my tire driver's license
05:57and that'll be my license from now on.
05:58The driving school itself
06:01is very simple,
06:03but it's time consuming.
06:05I spent two whole days
06:07at this driving school
06:08just for the motorbike portion.
06:10I then spent another whole day
06:12for the car portion
06:13and I'll get into the details
06:15of what we actually did
06:18at the driving school then,
06:19but that's the first thing you should do
06:21just to make sure
06:22that you can get booked in
06:23because they only take
06:24a certain amount of students each week.
06:27So you want to get booked in for that.
06:29Second thing you need,
06:31there's two really important documents
06:34that you have to get
06:35in order to get your tire driver's license,
06:38whether it's a car or motorbike.
06:40The first one is a resident certificate.
06:42So you need to go to Thai immigration.
06:45It needs to be a main immigration spot.
06:48I know here in Kwa Hing,
06:50there's an immigration office
06:52where you can do visa extensions
06:53and stuff at the Blue Port Mall.
06:55You cannot get a certificate of residence there.
07:00You need to go to the main immigration office
07:02and for that you need to bring in
07:05a photocopy of your passport front page,
07:08the visa stamp page.
07:11You need some sort of lease agreement
07:14or if you're saying it like an Airbnb
07:16or something like that,
07:17you're going to need to get
07:18some sort of proof printed off to bring in.
07:22So whether it's like just a receipt
07:25to show that you are staying in this residence.
07:28And then you need two passport sized photos of yourself.
07:32So you need to bring in all of those things
07:34to immigration to get your certificate of residence.
07:38That's the number one thing you need to get
07:40in order to get a tire license.
07:43All right, the second thing you need to get
07:44to get your tire license,
07:45whether it be a motorbike or car license,
07:48you actually have to get a doctor's certificate.
07:51They need to do a health check on you.
07:54So it's really simple.
07:56It's really cheap.
07:56It cost me, I think, 200 baht.
07:59I went to Bangkok Hospital here in Kwa Hing
08:02and they didn't really do much to be honest.
08:05They did like checked my breathing,
08:08checked my blood pressure, pulse.
08:11She did like a really basic sort of like reflex test
08:15on my legs and that was it.
08:18I was in and out.
08:19She asked me a few questions.
08:21She filled out the form for me.
08:23I paid my 200 baht.
08:26Doctor's certificate was done.
08:27So that was really easy.
08:29But the key thing to note is for both of these pieces of paper,
08:33the residence certificate and the doctor's certificate,
08:36they're only valid for 30 days.
08:38So you need to make sure when you're going to the land transport office
08:42to get your license that these pieces of paper are still valid.
08:47So don't go and get them too early.
08:49Get them, if you can, like the week or two before you're booked in
08:53to the land transport office.
08:55Okay, so once you got those two pieces of documents,
08:58here's where it gets time consuming.
09:00So for the motorbike license,
09:03you have to go to the driving school for two full days.
09:07And when I say full days,
09:09I showed up at 8 a.m. the first day
09:13and was there till 6 p.m.
09:15But thankfully they did let us leave for a couple of hours
09:19in the middle of the day for lunch and come back.
09:22So I just went home,
09:23had a bit of lunch,
09:25had a bit of a lay down
09:26and then came back.
09:29And to be honest,
09:30it was kind of mentally draining
09:32because it's mostly sitting in front of a TV screen
09:35watching videos.
09:37So the first day
09:39was basically watching this really basic safety video
09:45which was made by Honda.
09:47And it was all about
09:49pretty much
09:51how to operate a motorbike
09:53which if you've been riding a scooter
09:55around in Thailand or Asia,
09:56you probably have a fair idea
09:58of how to do all these things.
10:00But it's basically teaching you from scratch.
10:03And then
10:03that video went for about an hour
10:06and then the instructor took us all outside
10:10and he showed us
10:11basically how to do
10:12a pre-ride sort of safety check.
10:16So check your tyres,
10:17your brakes,
10:18your oil,
10:19things like that.
10:20By the way,
10:21I should mention
10:21this was all in Thai.
10:23The video was in Thai
10:24but there was subtitles luckily.
10:26There was one other Aussie bloke in the class
10:29so that made it
10:30a little bit easier for me
10:32because the instructor
10:33when he was doing like
10:35showing us how to do all the
10:37pre-drive tests and everything
10:39was just speaking in Thai
10:40and he was sort of pointing to things
10:43and we had to kind of figure out
10:44what he was saying
10:45but
10:46to be completely honest
10:47like it was really basic stuff.
10:49Check your oil,
10:50check your tyres,
10:52check your brakes,
10:53things like that.
10:54He then
10:56pointed us to this
10:57obstacle course.
10:58He went and did this like
10:59zigzag thing
11:00and rode over a couple of speed pumps
11:03and
11:04sort of towed this line
11:06and I thought this was just like
11:08a warm-up,
11:09like a practice
11:10on how to ride a bike.
11:12So we all went and did that.
11:14He told us to do it
11:15like three or four times
11:16and then he called us back in.
11:18I later learned
11:20from one of the locals
11:21that that was the
11:23that was the practical test.
11:25That was the test
11:25to see if you can ride a motorbike
11:27and we all passed obviously
11:29because it was super simple.
11:30We then spent
11:33probably the next
11:34two to three hours
11:36going through
11:37the
11:38theory exam
11:39questions.
11:41So
11:41reading through
11:42all of the exam
11:43questions,
11:44there was like
11:45honestly
11:45600 questions
11:47that we had to try
11:48and memorise
11:48as many as possible.
11:50For the actual exam,
11:52there's only 50 questions
11:54but
11:54for the practice
11:56there was like
11:56500
11:57so
11:57it's a multiple choice exam
12:00and I guess
12:01they wanted us
12:02to just
12:03learn as much
12:04as we could.
12:04So yeah,
12:05basically
12:06at the end of the second day
12:08you have to do
12:08an exam
12:09which is 50 questions,
12:11random questions
12:11and you need to get
12:1345 out of 50
12:14correct
12:14in order to pass.
12:16So
12:16on the first day
12:17they had us
12:17pretty much just
12:18practising that exam
12:20all afternoon
12:21which was
12:23so,
12:24so,
12:24so,
12:24so boring
12:25I can't stress enough.
12:26how boring it was
12:28but
12:28it had to be done.
12:30Then
12:30day two
12:31we showed up
12:32about the same time
12:33about 8.30
12:34and
12:35we had to watch
12:37another video
12:38except this video
12:39went for about
12:39three to four hours
12:41and was pretty much
12:44all about
12:46accidents
12:47on the road
12:48driver safety
12:49people telling
12:50their stories
12:51about
12:52accidents
12:52they'd been in
12:53and how it
12:54affected their lives
12:55so bad
12:56I recently
12:57put out a video
12:58about whether
12:59or not
12:59it's safe
12:59to drive
13:00a motorbike
13:01in Thailand
13:01because
13:02this video
13:03honestly
13:03was pretty
13:04gruesome
13:05and
13:06pretty eye-opening
13:07apparently
13:08there's 15,000
13:09deaths per year
13:10in Thailand
13:10just from
13:11motorbikes
13:11so we spent
13:12the first
13:12three to four
13:13hours
13:13of the second
13:14day
13:14watching that
13:15video
13:16then they
13:16gave us
13:17about an
13:17hour and a
13:18half
13:18lunch break
13:20and we
13:21came back
13:21and sat
13:22the theory
13:23test
13:25which I
13:25passed
13:26thankfully
13:26it wasn't
13:27too hard
13:28but there
13:28is a few
13:29tricky
13:29questions
13:29in there
13:30once we
13:30passed
13:31that
13:31then they
13:32gave us
13:33all of our
13:33paperwork
13:34to say
13:34that we
13:35had passed
13:35the driving
13:36school
13:37basically
13:37and then
13:38you make
13:38an appointment
13:39to go down
13:40to the land
13:40transport office
13:41which is
13:42where I'm
13:42headed now
13:43and honestly
13:45I don't
13:45100% know
13:46what to
13:47expect
13:47I think
13:48I'm gonna
13:49have to
13:49do a
13:50couple of
13:51other tests
13:52give them
13:53my paperwork
13:53and then
13:54take a
13:55photo maybe
13:57and get my
13:58new driver's
13:58license
13:59I'm hoping
13:59now that's
14:01just the
14:01motorcycle part
14:02for the
14:02car part
14:03they wanted
14:04me to
14:05do

19:08okay the good news is I got my Tide motorbike license the bad news is I
19:17wasn't able to get my car license I did the theory test and passed that it was
19:23pretty easy it was the same as the motorbike test but after I was done she
19:27said you can't do your practical driving test today because it's finished they
19:33do it from like 10 till 11 and I said well why did you let me make an
19:38appointment to get my car and motorbike license this is what the driving school
19:43told me to do as well so I hired a car to drive down here to do the test and
19:49now
19:49I've got to come back next week and do it all again I've got to hire a car again
19:53and drive down here and do the driving test so just as I thought a bit of
19:59confusion that's kind of just how it is here you know you ask people how things
20:06work and what you need to do and they always nod their head but you can tell
20:13by the look on their face they really don't know so yeah that's something to
20:18keep in mind if you're going to get your car license you may have to come here at
20:23a certain time you may have to come more than once a little bit disappointing
20:27because I've got to come and do this all again next week but that's the way it is
20:30at least I've got my motorbike license I'm pretty happy about that so I'm going to
20:34head home all right I made it back to the land transport office after a bit of confusion
21:05so I basically showed up went back upstairs to the driver license office and she just told me at
21:1310 o'clock go downstairs so I waited five minutes went downstairs and then they said yeah you have
21:22to go upstairs and give me a paperwork and I said no she already has all my paperwork she she
21:26kept hold of
21:28my paperwork when I was here last time so he said okay you need to do the test outside and
21:36I said
21:36yeah obviously I'm not going to do it inside am I and he just pointed so I've been walking around
21:44outside for the last five ten minutes trying to ask people where to do the test I found a guy
21:52got a
21:53uniform on and he said yep do it here he put up the number four I don't know what he
22:00meant by that
22:02but uh he said bring your car over park it inside this area here I can see cones and stuff
22:11like that
22:12I'm actually driving the wrong way on it one way so it's probably not a good start so I'm bringing
22:19my
22:19car over gonna park it and then I guess we're gonna do a test hopefully I don't have to wait
22:24too long
22:25because there's I can see a few cars in front of me here and hopefully I mean I'm guessing it's
22:32gonna be
22:32pretty easy judging by what the motorbike test was like I'm probably just gonna have to drive around in a
22:38straight line and maybe do some parking or something like that I guess we'll see what happens
22:48but you know I'm not complaining like this is all part of uh living in a foreign country there's
22:54language barriers and I don't know Thai so that's on me okay I really don't know what's going on
23:01we just about 20 of us went and sat in this room and they called out our names and we
23:07signed a piece
23:08of paper and then uh the instructor basically I think explained what we're supposed to do in Thai
23:16so there was no help to me at all um from what I can see though we have to pull
23:23up to a stop sign
23:25and be no more than 25 centimeters from the curb I remember that from the written test um and then
23:33a lot of people are just leaving straight after that so I don't understand what's going on there
23:37and some people are going over and doing some reverse parking and so far that's all I've seen
23:43the Thai the instructor asked me if I spoke Thai and when I said no he said just watch what
23:49other
23:49people do so there's about six or seven other cars people here so I think my plan is to just
23:56watch what they do and do the same I mean I can't imagine it's too hard I've actually watched a
24:04couple
24:04of people doing the parking and the pulling up to the stop sign I think these are people who've never
24:11really driven before so we should be okay but uh it's just a communication issue really see what
24:19happens all right there's about four or five other cars in front of me so um I'm gonna go and
24:27give it
24:27a shot now just watch what they do I suppose good thing is everyone's lined up so if I just
24:39drive in a
24:40straight line I should nail the uh 25 centimeter rule this is a lot of a lot of confusion when
24:49you
24:49don't speak a language I've got to start taking Thai lessons I'm actually kind of nervous like if I fail

24:56I'm gonna have to come and do this again there's no way I'm gonna fail the only way I would

25:04if there's a communication problem I've just seen like six or seven people just pull up to this stop sign

25:12drive straight out and they're done and yet there must be two different types of tests they're doing
25:19here no one's doing the same thing there's people driving one way people reversing the other way

25:38oh she just told me to stop I've noticed in Thailand this means come here
25:50I just hit the curb so I probably failed that

26:31these cones they got set up here and then reverse straight back which is pretty simple

26:51penalty license renewed
26:54now reverse back
26:59I'm going to do it
26:59without hitting any cones

34:05or a motorbike which is super important if we're going to be living here

34:43and I was telling him about the whole license experience
34:46and he told me that his friend just went and got his motorbike license from scratch
34:52same as what I did
34:54he'd never had a motorbike license before
34:58and he paid a visa agent 5,000 baht
35:01to just walk in and get it without having to do anything
35:06I can't believe it
35:07I paid 2,000 for mine plus 500 for the car part
35:14so basically half
35:16I would have easily paid double to save five days of screwing around to get a license
