00:00Use it when you want something a little bit more luxurious, a little bit more...
00:06It's $50!
00:08Hey guys, it's Mi-Anne and this is Beauty With Me.
00:10My bathroom is disgusting!
00:13Well, it was until I finally stopped complaining and did something about it.
00:17My good friend and co-worker, Lindsey Sanberry, just penned a book.
00:20It's called Money Diaries.
00:22It is the physical culmination of our column by the same name
00:25that catalogued the real-life expenses of women all over the world.
00:30I always thought that changing my bathroom and making it more palatable
00:34would be a really massive expense.
00:37But after reading Lindsey's book, which isn't all about beauty,
00:40but does have some self-care elements to it,
00:42I decided to figure out some ways that I could make my bathroom a little bit more pleasant
00:46without spending thousands and thousands of dollars renovating it.
00:49I used to walk into my bathroom and want to immediately leave it.
00:54I hated its awful green walls.
00:56I hated the dingy bathtub.
00:59I hated the lack of organization.
01:00So I decided that I was going to figure out different ways
01:04to get my bathroom to look like a spa and feel like a spa
01:08for $25, $100, and $750.
01:13First off is how to turn your bathroom into a spa for under 25.
01:17At the bare minimum, a bathroom should be a place where you can get clean,
01:22do your business, and also relax.
01:23You don't really need to shell out for hundreds of dollars' worth of lotions
01:27and aromatherapy oils.
01:28You can if you want to, and we'll get to that later.
01:31But you can do things that are very affordable,
01:34will still make you feel like you're having this luxurious experience.
01:38The first thing that I did was make a DIY salt scrub,
01:41and this was so affordable and you can make tons of it.
01:45I just bought some grapeseed oil and a little bit of pink Himalayan salt.
01:49Mix equal parts of salt and the grapeseed oil,
01:52and then lather up in the shower, scrub, scrub, scrub away,
01:55and you have nice smooth skin.
01:57I love grapeseed oil because it's a very lightweight oil,
02:00so it absorbs relatively quickly.
02:02And after you scrub your body, you can hop out,
02:05and you don't have to put moisturizer on because you already have the oil on your skin.
02:10I saved you time too.
02:12After the body scrub, I decided to make a really affordable DIY mask.
02:16So really, all you need for this is some bentonite clay.
02:18I used some from a brand called Aztec Secret,
02:21and you can just mix it with pretty much anything.
02:23You can just make a very simple clay mask with just the clay and water.
02:27Put that on your face and let it absorb oil, dirt, debris, that sort of thing.
02:31But you can also give it a little bit more horsepower
02:33by adding something like honey for hydration, tea tree oil for cleansing,
02:38or yogurt for the little lactic acid exfoliation.
02:41Now, although DIY body scrubs and masks can definitely make you feel pampered,
02:46I wanted to do a little something to make the space feel better.
02:49So I went to the store and I got a $4 bunch of eucalyptus,
02:52grabbed some hamstring and some scissors,
02:55and tied my eucalyptus to the base of my shower head.
02:57It doesn't just make your bathroom look infinitely more beautiful,
03:00but it also smells amazing when the hot water is on.
03:03It kind of releases the steam and the essential oils kind of come out,
03:06and you smell like you're in a spa.
03:08If you close your eyes, maybe you're not in your bathroom.
03:12But then you open your eyes and you are.
03:13So the grand total for all of that was $24.38.
03:17Next up, here are some things you can do to turn your bathroom into a spa for under $100.
03:21This is a section for those of you who want to do a little bit more,
03:24you want to buy a few more luxurious things, but you don't want to go too far.
03:28In my case, this immediately brought me to candles.
03:32I just discovered this new candle brand called Otherland,
03:35and they make stunning candles.
03:38I have the scent.
03:39It's called stone fruit, and it smells like stone fruits.
03:44It smells good.
03:45It smells sweet, and they retail for $36, which is kind of a lot to spend.
03:51It's not the most you could spend on the candle.
03:53So they retail for $36.
03:54They look beautiful on a bathroom shelf or on your bathtub.
03:57So I recommend.
03:59Next up, this is something that you can do to kind of feel like you're in a spa,
04:02but you aren't in a spa, and you didn't spend like $150 for a treatment.
04:07Last year, I went and got a facial from esthetician Renee Rouleau,
04:10and toward the tail end of the treatment,
04:11she used these little frozen toner bits to shrink my pores and also soothe my skin.
04:17This is something really fun and actually a real treat to do at home.
04:21I used Renee's energy boosting toner, which is a great toner.
04:25It has ginseng in it.
04:26It's very soothing.
04:27It doesn't make my skin feel tight or dry.
04:29I poured a little bit of this into ice cube trays, stuck it in the freezer,
04:33held tight for a few hours while it froze.
04:35Then I popped those suckers out, glided it on my skin after cleansing to soothe and tighten
04:41and all that good stuff.
04:42This is kind of a fun little treat you can do for yourself at home.
04:45After my face is cleansed and toned, I like to whip out this jade gua saw tool.
04:49I learned this facial massage technique from an acupuncturist named Sandra Lanshan.
04:53She actually did acupuncture on me, and I really like it because it doesn't just feel really good
05:00and it's very relaxing.
05:01It simulates lymphatic drainage and circulation,
05:03but it's also a really nice and easy way to apply your facial oil.
05:07Obviously, you can talk about different items to keep costs low.
05:10You can obviously spread a little more if you want something a little bit more luxurious,
05:13but these are just a few tips.
05:15My total for this round was $98.50.
05:18Now, here is the big expense.
05:20These are the things that I did for my bathroom to kind of turn it into a bit more of
05:23a spa-like
05:24environment for under $750.
05:26I love a good oil scrub, whatever, but it didn't really change the fact that my walls were still
05:32green, my bathroom was still kind of dingy, and I just wanted to do things to overall just
05:36brighten it up.
05:37The first thing I did was remove the horrible green walls in my bathroom and paint it white.
05:43I was so, so shocked at what a huge difference a few layers of paint and a couple of hours
05:50could make.
05:51Instantly brightened up the room, and it cost me like $60 for all the supplies.
05:55I also switched out the Tungsten lightbulb in favor of an energy-saving LED one in a daylight setting,
06:03and this was also, like, as soon as I turned that light on, we were all just like,
06:07whew!
06:07It was so, like, gross and yellow before.
06:09Now it's so bright and open, it makes it so much easier to put on makeup in the bathroom.
06:14I don't know why I didn't do it sooner.
06:15But I didn't stop there.
06:16I have been eyeing rugs from a brand called Cold Picnic for years and years and years,
06:22but I never really bit the bullet in terms of buying one.
06:25I purchased two mats, the kind of more abstract one is called Sleeping Giant,
06:29and then their most popular bath mat is called The Torso.
06:32Not only is the brand Brooklyn-based, but the textiles are absolutely beautiful and they are also washable.
06:39To deal with all the clutter on all the surfaces of my bathroom,
06:42I went to TJ Maxx and got a bunch of little baskets on sale.
06:46I have a lot of beauty products, and I had so many of them, like, stashed on my bathtub, on
06:50shelves.
06:51I decided to put them all in a few baskets. It made it look so much more organized.
06:55So I used to have my cleaning products just, like, on the floor, around the sink, which was really very
07:00unattractive.
07:00So I got a nice little basket as well and put it on the floor, put all my cleaning products
07:05in there,
07:05and I'm telling you, it might be the thing that gives me the most joy when I walk into the
07:09bathroom.
07:09Like, I thought it would be the paint, but actually just not seeing, like, random toilet cleaner on the sink
07:14and in a nice basket makes me very, very happy.
07:16When I was brainstorming for this video, I started to think about some things that spas always have in their
07:22waiting rooms
07:23and in their bathrooms to make it look really nice and relaxing, and I landed on greenery.
07:28Now, I don't have any windows in my bathroom, so having little succulents or hanging plants in the bathroom was
07:33kind of not an option.
07:35If you have a window, you should get real plants, but I couldn't.
07:37I got a few fake plants and put them on shelves and on different areas of the bathroom
07:41just to make it look a little bit more natural and warm and inviting.
07:44So I've been looking to switch out my shower head for something a little bit more water efficient.
07:49The average flow rate for, like, a typical shower head is about 2.1 gallons per minute.
07:53I want something lower than that, so I found this really awesome shower head called the Raindrop Shower Head.
07:59It costs $120, and it has a filter on it, and the filter should be replaced every six months, and
08:05it costs about $53.
08:06So the filter filters out bacteria, algae, chlorine, and other trace minerals, and according to the brand,
08:11it can help improve the texture of your skin and your hair and keep your color fresher longer.
08:16I've only been using it for about a week, so it's too soon to tell whether or not it's really
08:20improving my hair,
08:21although I used it last night and I'm really into what my hair looks right now.
08:24While in the shower, I think it's sometimes fun to indulge in a fancy shower oil.
08:29This one from Diptyque is my favorite.
08:31This fella is $50, which is expensive for what is essentially a glorified body wash, but it is absolutely beautiful.
08:38I don't think you should use it every day.
08:39I think you should use it on the days that you really want to pamper yourself.
08:42When you want a kind of body wash slash hydrating product slash aromatherapy product in one,
08:49it leaves my skin feeling super good.
08:50A couple pumps cleans your entire body.
08:52After you shower, you can still kind of smell the product like lingering on your skin.
08:57I know this because I had a crew member confirm.
08:59The next product seems a little gimmicky, but trust me, it works.
09:04The Equisse Hair Towel.
09:07It is a hair towel that dries your hair faster and causes less friction on the hair.
09:13So I personally, with color treated hair, try not to heat style it.
09:17I never blow dry my hair, but it's annoying when I shower before I go to bed
09:21and my hair is not dry when I go to bed.
09:22So I've been using this.
09:24It works.
09:25It dries your hair so much faster.
09:26My hair feels so much softer since I've been using it.
09:28So before hopping out of the shower, I like to use a moisturizer or a body oil to hydrate.
09:33And this one, it's the Pure Radiance Body Oil from True Botanicals.
09:36It's expensive.
09:37It's $48, but it is the best body oil I've ever used.
09:42It is ridiculously lightweight.
09:44It absorbs in seconds.
09:46It smells amazing.
09:47It truly smells like a spa.
09:50I used to kind of think that a robe was like an extra unnecessary thing to have
09:55because you can just put your pajamas on.
09:57But I did get a robe and it is really nice.
10:00I got a really affordable one for $15.
10:02It's just black.
10:03It feels really soft.
10:04It has like this extra little tie places.
10:06It doesn't come out all the time when you're wearing it.
10:08I'm a robe person now.
10:10Last but not least, if you want something a little bit more powerful than the Guasa tool,
10:15I suggest getting a facial treatment like this one.
10:19This is the NuFace Trinity Treatment.
10:21It costs $325, but you can get the mini version for $199.
10:26And I'm not going to lie to you guys, that's very expensive.
10:29However, MyHook current technology is great for improving the tone, the contouring, and the overall texture of your skin.
10:36This is an at-home version, so it is less powerful than what an esthetician would use on your skin
10:40at a spa,
10:40but it is something that you can use multiple times a week.
10:44If it's something that you want to splurge for, go for it.
10:46But if not, obviously there are a lot of other things in this video that you can get as well.
10:50So that is it.
10:52Everything that I've done in my bathroom over the past month, pretty much, for under $25, $100, and $750.
10:58I cannot tell you how thrilled I am with the NuSpace.
11:02Walking into my bathroom isn't a debilitating experience anymore.
11:07Now there's a beautiful white wall, a beautiful daylight bulb, nice smelling things around me.
11:15My cat started sleeping in the bathroom.
11:18At the very least, it's kitty approved.
11:20See you next time. Bye.
