00:05The results of the first round of Brazil's elections defied expectations both inside
00:11and outside the country. The day also marked the beginning of a wave of mobilizations that
00:16would continue for weeks with young people among its protagonists. Indeed, something new has
00:23emerged. Young people were apathetic during the first round of elections, as reflected in the
00:28polls. However, they have now started to mobilize out of fear that Flavio Bolsonaro might win.
00:35Within just a few hours, students in Rio de Janeiro organize themselves to take to the street.
00:40The student movement must lead this fight against six-day work weeks defending who get just one rest
00:45day. Brazil is at risk. A major process of destabilization is underway, and our wealth
00:51will continue to be taken abroad in an increasingly violent manner. Young women have been at the
00:56forefront of many of these mobilizations across different spheres.
01:04Young schoolgirls are witnessing the growth of the red pill movement on social media
01:09and the use of algorithms to promote hate speech and violence. They look up to left-wing
01:16women parliamentarians in the democratic camp, and they are the ones taking to the streets.
01:21Mayra from the MST is part of this generation. In 2024, she became the first candidate from the
01:27Landless Workers Movement to be elected to Rio City Council.
01:33I come from a background in youth movements. I started out as an activist at the age of 16 in
01:40my own
01:40community of Jacarepa Gua. I then joined the student movement and realized that political struggle
01:47was what had kept my university open.
01:50As was the case for Mayra two years ago, this election has also brought other young people
01:55into legislative office, many of them boosted by their activity on social media. One example
02:00is Rick Acevedo, who led the campaign to reduce weekly working hours recently approved by the Congress.
02:08That mobilization was entirely digital. It was led by Rick Acevedo, a young worker from Rio de Janeiro,
02:17who launched a petition that gained significant traction. He subsequently became a city councilor
02:24and is now a federal deputy.
02:26Some believe this moment is part of a broader process of revitalizing progressive forces in the digital sphere.
02:33The far right is constantly mobilizing, whereas the left is not because it has not embraced the
02:38digital dimension as a structural part of its work. This is a new development that has emerged
02:42during the second round of voting. And once again, young people are better placed to take the lead.
02:48Young Brazilians are thus joining a global wave of mobilizations in response to the rise of the far right
02:54and its policies, which directly affect students and workers.
02:59Latin American history shows us that young people have always played a key role in major mobilizations.
03:05From the Cuban and Nicaraguan revolutions to the current protests against Malay's government in Argentina,
03:11young people have played a pivotal role. I think this movement generates a great deal of hope.
03:18It gives us the feeling that we can keep moving forward. But it is also the kind of hope that
03:23Paulo Freire taught us,
03:24hope as an active verb, hoping through action.
03:27On October 25th, Brazil's future will be decided, while the mobilizations of recent weeks have once again
03:33placed young people at the center of the region's political struggle.
