00:00Street Style is brought to you by Garnier.
00:08We're in the month of October and that means it's officially all about the goods.
00:14So today we'll be having a discussion about the importance of undergarments,
00:18how to choose the correct bra, and even options available to women who've had mastectomies.
00:23And who better to have the conversation with than Ms. Braffitt herself, Mrs. Nicole Joseph-Chin.
00:31Ms. Braffitt, thank you so much for having us today.
00:34Thank you and thanks for coming and I like the fact that we're making time for this very critical conversation.
00:41And truth be told, yes, it's October, so there's a spotlight shined or shone during the month of October
00:49around the girls as you referenced or breasts.
00:53The truth is, let's talk about the breasts every single day.
01:00I agree, and the light breasts, I'm assuming that there are many different types of bras,
01:04perhaps even some types that we haven't even heard about.
01:07So the truth be told, there are really two aspects.
01:11It's the everyday bra and it's the specialty bra.
01:14And then inside of there, you have a world of styles, of colors, of shapes.
01:22But they all should be functional.
01:25That's the real cue there, the functionality.
01:28Is there any particular type of bra that you would recommend for small, medium, large,
01:33and vice versa, any particular type that you don't recommend for particular sizes?
01:38So yes.
01:38And essentially, the balcony bra is like the bra essential.
01:44It can go from, let's say, a D cup all the way up, let's say, to maybe a J.
01:51I would say, you go in D to J, you're safe with a balcony bra, balcony.
01:55The balcony, the balcony, the balcony is more designed for the smaller or more petite frame
02:01and the smaller bust line.
02:03Because what it does is it gives that impression of a bigger or wider set, a region, okay?
02:11So in that set and that region, you find that once you have the bra placed well on you
02:16when it's your right size, it's going to make the impact that you require in terms of showing
02:24cleavage.
02:25One of the mistakes a lot of women make is wearing the wrong bra underneath a garment.
02:31So like, if you're doing plunging necklines, the better bra would be the balcony bra.
02:38If it is that you're going into, like, maybe a turtleneck or you're wearing something with
02:43a rounder neck, you can wear, which would be like a smoothing t-shirt bra, especially
02:47if it is that you're wearing lighter fabrics.
02:50So the fabric that you're wearing as your top layer that goes over the bra should also
02:56dictate what type of bra you're going to wear, if it's going to be smoothing.
03:00Now, I will tell you this.
03:01I like to take risks in terms of that edgy look with the bra.
03:04So I love when you pair a silhouette of a light fabric over a beautifully designed bra.
03:15Let's say lace, or let's say maybe something that has some color, or anything that has a
03:22texture.
03:23So taking a little bit of a license of poetry with your bra, you can then decide, I want
03:30to be creative.
03:31I want to wear the bra on the outside.
03:33So you're talking over garments as over garments.
03:37Over garments.
03:38And you know, sometimes it's also nice if you have a beautifully defined bra strap.
03:43It's also sometimes nice to show the bra strap.
03:46What options are available to women who have survived cancer and have had mastectomies?
03:52So that's, that's really a very dynamic experience for a woman and a dynamic series of bras that
04:05has to be matched with her entire journey.
04:08So that what has to happen now is that we have to understand at what phase of her recovery is
04:15she's in and then work accordingly.
04:18We can go extremely dramatic and she can wear a strapless bra and she can enjoy a strapless
04:25bra, even having, having had a mastectomy.
04:29And if she's opted for reconstruction, we can also make sure that whatever those bras are,
04:35are going to also be compatible and workable inside of that new physical experience that
04:42she is going through.
04:44So she can wear a prosthesis, she can wear, she can use bras with her implants, she can
04:50go swimming.
04:51There is no limitation.
04:53What is often your first sign or signs that a bra is not fitting well?
05:01There are many.
05:02You know how they say there will be signs?
05:05There will be signs.
05:07That's to be important.
05:09First things first, if that bra is riding up your back, it means that the band of the
05:18bra is too big.
05:20Your cups might be fitting in it, but because of the weight of the breast tissue, it would
05:24be pressing the breast forward.
05:27The shoulder straps will shift and the back of the bra would rise and elevate.
05:33So that's definitely a no-no, right?
05:36Any kind of spillage that's coming either on top of the cup or below the cup or to the
05:41side of the breast, again, is a sign.
05:44And I always tell women, once you could push your hand at the back of a bra and have enough
05:52room for your hand to go left and right while the bra is sitting snugly on you, it's a good
05:57fit.
05:58The other thing is, of course, sometimes the shoulder straps might fall.
06:03And again, it might be for many reasons, including a physiological need.
06:08So make sure you have the straps well anchored on you.
06:13And, of course, last but not least, if for any reason it's a bone or wire bra and that wire
06:23is sticking in and digging in, it is not your size cup.
06:30Don't even try to force it.
06:32It is just not your cup size.
06:35So, ladies, just remember, the next time you're thinking about getting a bra, please ensure
06:41that you get a proper fitting by a professional.
06:45I'm Renessa Cutting and this was Street Style.
