00:00Brazil is preparing for a decisive presidential run of election that will shape the nation's
00:05future.
00:06For the latest developments from the South American country, we connect right now with
00:11our special envoy Belen de los Santos, who is in Rio de Janeiro.
00:15Go ahead, Bel, we hear you.
00:30One of the largest countries in the continent, you know that Latin America not only has outstanding
00:36nature, but also some of the key natural resources in the world, Ali, and I'm telling you this
00:41because it has to do with a little bit of what we wanted to talk now today, as we are
00:47in this
00:47last few days, up to the October 2015 run-up that will take place right now.
00:55So, you're talking about climate change and how that impacts the Brazilian election as
01:01well.
01:01Because you know that there's two diverse models that are clashing in this election, the model
01:07of the PT with President Lula Silva and the model of the Liberal Party with Flávio Bolsonaro
01:14in this case, have two very different approaches to climate change.
01:19Well, particularly, Bolsonaro has been famous.
01:22Bolsonaro's father, starting with him and then down to his son, famous for disregarding
01:28any agenda, world agenda, in terms of caring for the environment and protecting the world
01:35against and doing everything they can against global warming and climate change.
01:41You know that following the line of Donald Trump from the U.S. is a line of an ideology that
01:48really disregards the idea of climate change.
01:51They say it's part of the quote-unquote liberal agenda that goes against the development of
01:57the countries and just not agree, you know, that the United States, for example, would be
02:05the United States and the United States and the United States and the United States.
02:07Well, with Bolsonaro's father, Brazil followed on the same line.
02:13And you know that Brazil has an important impact in this matter, and that is why the entire world
02:20really looks at this, because of the important portion of the Amazon that is within Brazilian borders.
02:27So, how much the Brazilian government is willing to comply with these climate goals
02:34and really care for the natural resources that make this planet a sustainable one is really important,
02:42not only for the country, for the region, but for the world.
02:45That is how important it is.
02:47It also has, as with the Bolsonaro federal administration, even impacts with the relationship with Europe.
02:55You know that the agreement that was just years in the making and actually came into
03:01course this year between Mercosur and the European Union.
03:05One of the biggest challenges between them is that they needed, the European Union needed
03:12the region to comply with several measures in order to project climate change.
03:18And while Brazil wasn't doing that, it was very difficult to move forward.
03:23Well, you know that this week, Brazil got some last results, and they've had a record
03:30load in terms of deforestation for the past year.
03:35This means that the agenda with the new administration of Lula Silva has been having a lot of increases,
03:41successes in terms of protecting, in this case, the forests that are seen.
03:47There's a lot of things involved.
03:49It has to do with a project, a model that focuses on the sustainability of the environment,
03:56sometimes in detriment of what could be businesses as the agribusiness that tends to expand and expand
04:03the usage of land with this regard to how that affects climate change in this case.
04:09And also, there's one important factor to keep in mind for a future administration.
04:12It has to do with the exploitation of natural resources and how that impacts the environment as well.
04:21We are talking about the United States willing to set up data centers for AI.
04:26We are talking about the exploitation of the Earth, so all of that has to do with this election as
04:31well.
04:32Will Brazil have a government that defends its natural sovereignty and protects climate change or not?
04:40Thank you, Bel, very much.
04:42We will keep in contact in upcoming admissions to know more from the South American nation.
04:47We will keep working on the conversation as well.
