00:00Brazil is entering the final hours of the electoral campaign ahead of the October 4th
00:05general election. To take a closer look at how this final day is unfolding across the country,
00:10we now go live to our special envoy Belen de los Santos in Rio de Janeiro. Welcome, Belen.
00:18Hello, Pablo. Exactly as you were saying, so final day of campaigning. Now we are just one
00:24day away from the election tomorrow, this first round of elections that will define at least the
00:30beginning of this electoral story. Let's recall we are looking at a very close race apparently
00:37from what we know about the polls. The last poll from Datafolia is showing Lula da Silva from the PT,
00:45the Workers' Party, standing at around 45 percentage points of the votes with Flavia
00:52Bolsonaro from the far right, let's recall the son of Jair Bolsonaro, who's at this moment serving
00:59with a sentence after the coup attempt in 2022. Well, we are looking at him standing at about
01:07five percentage points after Lula da Silva, so around 40 percent. This would place both candidates
01:14going into a run-up that will be held on October 25th. In order for tomorrow to completely the
01:22find the electoral scene, either one of them would have to reach the 50 percentage points. So that
01:29is the scene right now. Of course, there is a lot of expectations just before in the last hours,
01:35because we know that statistically it is the last few days, the last few hours that is really setting
01:41the tone for those undecided voters or those voters who could in the end, because of final news,
01:49final presentations, final rallies even, they could maybe switch both. Statistically, that will be the
01:57deciding factor and that is where both candidates are really placing their final efforts on the
02:04biggest topics and on the most relevant electoral districts. So we've seen Luis Ignacio Lula da Silva
02:13have his final rally caravan actually here first in Rio de Janeiro, then in Minas Gerais and finally today,
02:23today morning in Sao Paulo in the Paulista Avenue. There was some some suspicion regarding if he could help this
02:33rally because there was some authorization that was not coming through until the very last minute, but actually it was
02:38approved. It was
02:39held today a very important concentration in one of the most important cities of the country,
02:46Sao Paulo. And while that is the the campaigning act, the final campaigning act for Lula da Silva,
02:53Flavio Bolsonaro is also having some motorcades. So motor caravans that are touring also the state of Sao
03:01Paolo particularly, but not so much in the city, but around the state. He is trying to consolidate that
03:10ground, that territory that has proven to be very close aligned to Bolsonaro's policies. It's one of
03:17the most important electoral districts to dispute and Lula da Silva also knows that he needs to win as
03:24many votes from this key electoral districts in order to get as close to 50 percentage points as possible. We
03:32know that
03:32the most important sectors of influence for Lula are actually in the northeast of the country, but it's the
03:41southeast that controls the most amount of votes and will probably define the race, Fabio.
03:49I would like to ask you, after these weeks of intense campaigning, what message are Lula and Flavio
03:56Bolsonaro trying to leave with voters in these final hours and which issues have dominated their closing
04:02appeals? Super interesting. So of course, as we were saying, the final topics are the ones that truly
04:13resonate on voters when they need to head to the polls on Sunday. So maybe if we get a little
04:19bit
04:19deeper into each of the discourse, we could say that on the one hand, Flavio Bolsonaro has been leading
04:25a campaign much focused on the appeal to conservative sectors, to evangelical sectors, this constant need for
04:35a supposed change in terms of focusing conservative values in particular. Also a campaign that is
04:42mainly focused on its opposition against President Lula da Silva. There's a lot of analysts pointing this
04:49out. It's not so much the propositions themselves as it is the way that they are positioning themselves
04:57against Lula da Silva and that is basically his main political value. That and the fact that he is the
05:06son of Jair Bolsonaro because there is not much of a political career before that. So on Lula da Silva's
05:13side,
05:13there's been a lot of focus on the main topics that all surveys show have to do with the more
05:21the core
05:21interest of most voters. So we've had a lot of discussion of the indebtedness, for example, with the
05:29prohibition of bets agencies. We talked about this through the week, the prohibition of the online
05:36baiting agencies and their relation to household income and how a lot of people were getting into debt
05:43because of this profit making industries. Also, a lot that has to do with the discussion of how the
05:52international scene is playing into this election. Lula da Silva from the UN days ago until this moment
05:59has been very vocal about the United States trying to intervene in internal matters. This is not just
06:06Brazil. This is a scene that we are seeing around the continent, but of course, Brazil is a major player.
06:11So also Lula da Silva has been speaking in favor of defending sovereignty, defending resources,
06:18defending the decades long projects that Brazil has been leading and the fact that it is a sovereign
06:25matter that Brazil gets to decide on its own issues. So those could be seen as maybe the main topics
06:33for
06:34both candidates. And of course, we're just hours away from knowing what is going to happen tomorrow.
06:41We will see what happens tomorrow and we will reach you again in another news brief. Thank you for the
06:46latest information.
