00:00Brazil has lived through a decisive election this October 4th, as the country heads into a run-off to decide
00:06its president for the coming years.
00:07Our special envoy in Rio de Janeiro, Belen de los Santos, has the details on how the day unfolded.
00:15Polls opened at 8 a.m. across Brazil.
00:18In Rio de Janeiro, voters arrived early at the electronic voting machine stationed throughout the 3rd Electoral District in the
00:24country.
00:26Yes, it was very fast. I brought my son this time.
00:28It was very nice to vote with him.
00:30The polarization that had increasingly marked the last weeks filled the air as two opposite development plans faced each other
00:38in this election.
00:43It's a decisive election because there are two candidates who are running for the presidency.
00:48They are very antagonistic. I don't know what the future will be.
00:55This year, as the last year's was very polarized, there are two sides.
00:59And both sides are fighting until the final moments to see how it will end.
01:03As the day went by, many plans were made for the Apuraçao at 5 p.m., Brazil's rapid electronic vote
01:11count.
01:11We will meet. We will have an afternoon coffee somewhere.
01:18A get-together where each one brings something.
01:21Soon, the results showed a clear trend.
01:23Flávio Bolsonaro in the lead, ending over two points ahead of Lulil Silva, with nearly all ballots counted.
01:33When the counting started, it gave me a heart attack, because I was taken by an emotion that we were
01:37going to win.
01:39It was total polarization. We didn't have a third way.
01:43So, as we don't have a third way, what worries me is that we may have fascism in power again.
01:47And I think it will be very scary for Brazil and Latin America.
01:54In a deeply divided country, Bolsonaro's support was celebrated.
01:59Lula waited until the final results as the gap narrowed and vowed to keep fighting until the runoff,
02:05a complex path that begins tomorrow.
02:08I think so. I believe. And I'm doing the L.
02:15And I keep believing. And I'm going to fight for Lula.
02:17Because I can't think of this Brazil without Lula as president in the next four years.
02:23Let's wait. Let's continue fighting. And let's vote consciously.
02:27Brazil's presidential election will now be decided in a second round on October 25th.
02:33Francisco Samudio, Belen de los Santos, for Telasur English, from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
