00:27This is Tim Wassberg from Fest Track on Surf TV.
00:29I'm here in Toronto, Ontario for the Toronto Film Festival.
00:35It's all right.
00:49Because our notion of time now is different.
00:52Obviously, we can call it, we can find out where somebody is and something like that.
00:56But back then, you didn't know.
00:57And that sort of anticipation, building that cinematically, like with the fire coming over the horizon, that was something very
01:06interesting because it's hard for today's youth to understand what that felt like.
01:11And all information, they came from, you know, the information come over the river, through the corpses or from the
01:18air.
01:19And so, yeah.
01:21And then there's a lot of gossip in the air, you know.
01:23They didn't know what should we do.
01:25And it was interesting to build it.
01:29Again, here we have the parallel to nowadays, right?
01:33With the fake news, somehow what to trust or whom to trust.
01:38Yeah.
01:39How do we find our own moral compass?
01:43How do we behave in extreme situations?
01:45I think that was also a question of the psychology.
01:48Yeah.
01:48And if we follow our country, eat it.
01:50And I think we do see that language is power because Greta in the beginning, she's very mute.
01:57She just doesn't talk a lot.
02:00And the men who speak, they do it to manipulate somehow.
02:05But in that moment, Greta starts to speak and to ask questions.
02:11And she becomes self-determined.
02:15Now, how do you say it?
02:15Self-determination.
02:17Yeah, self-determination.
02:17Yeah, self-determination.
02:19And I think that's…
02:22She's very resolute.
02:24She won't let things defy her.
02:28But in a silent way, I guess.
02:30And she gets there.
02:31It's not right from the beginning.
02:32It's not clear how would she choose in the end.
02:37But, yeah, we see her growing.
02:38And it's also about belief, what you believe.
03:05And it's also about belief, what you believe.
03:11I guess the war was often difficult if you were in a town or in a small village.
03:18I guess in a normal village, it was more daily life.
03:24And in towns…
03:26Did religion take…
03:26Because I know you placed the priest in there.
03:29Yeah, yeah.
03:29Did religion take a point or what was…
03:31Yeah, that was also a sort that, you know, everybody from our characters, they think they do the right thing.
03:42So, they want to protect something.
03:45And then the priest believes in his God and the mayor, he believes in this kind of Nazi cult.
03:53And so, the Meta, she believes in the universe and try to superstition stuff, you know.
04:00And then belief has such a strong power, when you believe strongly, you can do everything, so in a worse
04:11or in a good way.
04:13And so, you have this typical form.
04:23And now, all together.
04:27The tree comes out of the lake, it climbs around the tree.
04:35I always, I like to go from the, go inside from the psychological aspect.
04:41And your short zone.
04:43Yeah, did you make some research?
04:45Yeah, nice.
04:46Yeah, yeah.
04:47I always work from, to be honest, also that always plays a role in my movies.
04:54And it's, yeah, what's interesting most is the behavior.
05:01I like to portray people in extreme emotions.
05:06So, when you are poor naked, you know, your mind can't work.
05:11You are, you are, you show your poor naked.
05:17Primal?
05:18Yeah, yeah.
05:19Primal.
05:19Yeah, yeah, yeah.
05:20And that's what's interesting to me.
05:21Because something worse maybe come out and you show you from a special side.
05:26And I guess also in the mayor, for example, something, you get a bit paranoid.
05:31And you didn't know in the movie if it's really an order from the government or is it just his
05:40interpretation of something.
05:42I hope it, you see it in the movie.
05:45It's pretty good.
05:45So, yeah, yeah.
05:46But we just see where fascist ideology leads us to.
05:53And it really turns against life itself.
05:56And that in the end, you're alone with it somehow.
06:00That really struck me.
06:03And, yeah.
06:06Was it primal, a lot of the acting as far as like going into these scenes, you know, how did
06:13you feel them out together?
06:14Yeah, she starts doubting.
06:16Yeah.
06:17She starts doubting.
06:18And what I could feel her in her unsicherheit.
06:28Unsecure?
06:29Unsecure?
06:31What is it?
06:32Insecure?
06:33Insecure, yeah, where she doesn't feel like she knows what she's doing or is not fully confident.
06:39Yeah, it really somehow, as I said before,
06:44what the feelings from Greta haunted me for a long time.
06:47The echo from what I experienced while I immersed myself into the character.
06:58Yeah, that was quite tough.
07:02Und nochmal.
07:09Und verkriecht sich in der Höhle.
07:20Ja, recht einfach eigentlich.
07:22Oder, Kinder?
07:25I like what you said, something about an echo.
07:27Because it's basically how we king against society, how society brings back.
07:32And that's what film is.
07:34And that's what film allows.
07:35Exactly.
07:36And I do think we could frame the movie under the headline, the spirit we have summoned somehow.
07:44Right?
07:44Nice.
07:46And I can add that when, how we work together, it was, you know, every day we go in the
07:52darkness together.
07:54But otherwise, when you shoot such a strong movie, then you need light on set, you know?
08:00And we were such a great crew with all the people and we have really, really fun.
08:05And I hope you can believe this.
08:08I'm sorry.
