00:27This is Tim Wassberg from Fest Track on Surf TV.
00:29I'm here in Toronto, Ontario, for the Toronto Film Festival.
00:41I'm ready. I'm ready for the change.
00:47The truth is a very interesting word.
00:50But also the truth versus, like, say, with evil.
00:55It's not evil.
00:58Abel, not evil, yes, yes.
01:01Abel, yes, he's a little bit evil.
01:05He knows what he wants, though.
01:07But the thing is, is that how he goes about doing it.
01:11Did you find a resoluteness in that?
01:13Or did you find strength?
01:15Did you find weakness?
01:16Well, I believe that Abel, his behavior is like just going straight ahead.
01:27He knows what he wants to.
01:30So he used this guy, this character to get it, to get the working class.
01:42Why?
01:43Because he's from Cuba.
01:44He lives in the, on a socialism environment.
01:55So he knows what is suffering.
01:57I'm sorry.
01:58He knows what is suffering.
02:00He knows the way he can talk to people on the working class.
02:06And I believe Abel can, can, can promise him a better life, uh, to increase his, um,
02:22Commodices, uh,
02:26Increase his, I don't know, his skills maybe, yeah, and, and Abel wants to, to use him so he can,
02:34um, convince the people, uh, the working class that, that works for, for Abel, you know, um,
02:45Hasta que.
02:47Until.
02:48Until then, he, he just, um,
02:54Screwed up with, uh, with, uh, with another girl.
02:57Um,
02:59What was the character name?
03:01Silvina.
03:01Silvina.
03:02Okay.
03:03And, uh,
03:06he, he, he touched, uh, the feelings of, of, uh, Camilo.
03:11Okay.
03:12And he become a, a rescue man.
03:14Okay.
03:15He, he just want to rescue another human being, but most important,
03:21And that, the child that is inside that human being.
03:24Okay.
03:25So he is the protector of, of our, um,
03:31Of our future.
03:32Okay.
03:34O sea, no solo protege a su hija.
03:37He, he, he just not protect her, uh, her son.
03:41Uh, uh, it's, it's, it's his, it's a protector of the humanity by taking care of another, another woman,
03:47On our new child.
03:49Mm.
03:52El señor Abel ya te puede recibir, Camilo.
03:57Gracias.
04:04Camilo.
04:05Camilo, ven, pasa.
04:07Ven, siéntate.
04:08Ven.
04:15Te felicito.
04:17¿O qué?
04:19La toma de la fábrica.
04:20Como controlaste a los del sindicato.
04:23Un maestro.
05:57I mean, even, there's sociologists like Hoffman that, you know, argue that every time we're wearing a mask,
06:03depending on who we're talking to, blah, blah, blah, you know, those things.
06:06And what I wanted to explore in the nature of, in the film,
06:11is that I claim that nowadays, everything that we are,
06:17or whatever we say, or whatever we do, in a way,
06:23can be capitalized by the system that we live on,
06:28which is rampant capitalism,
06:31as an empiric statement, not as an opinion, you know,
06:37but that's the system we're living in, no?
06:39It's rampant capitalism that can capitalize all of these soft identities
06:46that we, you know, we exercise in our lives,
06:49and whatever we say or do can be used for electoral purposes.
06:55So that's the film, in a way.
06:59And Camilo, as a Cuban, right now, in a very dire situation,
07:05where there are two, I'll mention it because here's where this ambiguity can be hit in different sides,
07:13there are two main guilty countries for that.
07:20One is the United States, and the other is the government of Cuba.
07:23It has always hurt, it has hurt a lot the Cuban people.
07:28And the Cuban people right now are in a situation of survival,
07:32of complete and utter survival.
07:34And Camilo grabs this opportunity to survive.
07:38And what is survival?
07:40Doing whatever the people want him to be.
07:45Being whoever everyone wants him to be.
07:48So even his wife, if his wife tells him,
07:50don't be Cuban, be someone else, he'll play it.
07:53Say.
07:54If somebody else tells him, don't say that, say this,
07:57do it less, more, give it more,
07:59he'll do it because he's surviving.
08:01He's surviving, he's surviving, he's trying to survive in this world that we live in.
08:06And that's, unfortunately, that's the nature of the day-to-day of any Cuban right now.
08:14Why are you here?
08:16And you?
08:17And you?
08:17What are you doing here?
08:19I live here.
08:20No, not everything that appears in this house and this family.
08:23This is a police.
08:24No me logramos.
08:28Todos vamos a salir ganando.
08:31Si lo que vivimos es una farsa,
08:34inventate una farsa que esté buena.
08:35Qué buen cubano saliste, ¿eh?
08:37No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
