00:00And now we move to another topic, to the upcoming runoff of the presidential elections in Brazil.
00:08We have more information with our special envoy Belen de los Santos.
00:13Hello, Belen, how are you?
00:17Hello, Ana, how are you?
00:18Exactly as you were saying, it is the last stretch.
00:23Yes, we have the last days, last week before the runoff of October 25th.
00:27And it's really been some intense days, and probably the ones to come are going to be just the same.
00:34A lot of campaigning, a lot of mobilization, a lot of discussion in social media as well.
00:40Let's recall that we are looking at a period of time in which mobilization implies, at the same time, taking
00:47to the street and also taking to social media.
00:50With, and I wanted to bring this a little bit, with all the discussion as well that is going on
00:57regarding the accusations against Meta, for example.
01:01I'm talking about the U.S. technological company and the way that it has influence in the distribution of electoral
01:08material in favor of one side instead of the other.
01:12We are talking about favoring Fabio Bolsonaro in the state of Lula.
01:15There is the campaign of Lula Silva denounces first before electoral authorities, right after the first round, Ana.
01:25And then it said last week that it would take this to the international community as well.
01:31We are talking about a company that manages Facebook, Instagram, and different ways of circulating the material in social networks.
01:41And that it has at least admitted to different failures that did make some items to be more distributed than
01:49the others.
01:50And actually last week there was also leaked messages from within the company that then were certified in which the
01:59employees said that this was happening and that this did have the effect of influencing the campaign.
02:05So that is all going on at the same time.
02:08The campaigns are continuing, but also we are at a point in which we need to understand how much these
02:15great companies are also, first of all, not Brazilian.
02:18So there's interference from other states and influencing on these last few days in which, Ana, everything matters because we
02:28are looking at a very, very close race.
02:31You know, Flavio Bolsonaro, Lula Silva, Flavio left and ended the first round in the lead by less than two
02:39points.
02:40And actually the polls have been spinning that difference throughout the days.
02:45So we are going to see what happens.
02:48We're following minute by minute.
02:50Yeah.
02:51And also yesterday on Sunday, it was the presidential debate between Lula da Silva and Flavio Bolsonaro.
02:59They both had opportunities, but they skipped it, but they had it yesterday.
03:04What can you tell us about the debate?
03:07So we've been talking a little bit on the debate.
03:10First, the major topic, for example, security, one of them, because they, of course, both of them addressed.
03:17You know that security is one of the main concerns for voters.
03:22This is coming up in mainly all polls.
03:26So that is why it is such a crucial topic.
03:28And what we saw was the two different divisions that these governments are bringing to the table.
03:35Of course, Flavio Bolsonaro has been campaigning on this idea of doing the war on drugs.
03:42Very similar.
03:43It must ring a bell with the idea that the U.S. is imposing on the entire region.
03:49Also, for example, following a model of El Salvador that tackles the issue of security with tackling at the same
03:59time and just disregarding completely human rights in the Constitution.
04:03Well, that is the proposal from the right, from the Bolsonaro's Liberal Party.
04:11And again, he was repeating this same slogan.
04:15Lula da Silva, for his part, was talking about the importance of this issue, but the importance of understanding an
04:24integrated and coordinated approach that starts by, first of all, coordinating every agency involved in fighting crime,
04:32and particularly fighting criminal organizations and also fighting corruption within those agencies and the links and political ties, that is
04:42a central point.
04:44So that is for security.
04:45And then, Annie, there were a lot of cross-accusations, right?
04:50Particularly, Lula da Silva was pressing on the link between Flavio Bolsonaro and Burcuaro.
04:58So let's recall that we are talking about the Great Candle of Bank Master.
05:03It was a bank that committed one of the greatest frauds in Brazil.
05:09And there is a direct link between a money that was borrowed by Flavio Bolsonaro, allegedly to fund a film
05:18that is being made for the life, to portray the life of his father in prison, Jair Bolsonaro.
05:25But there were a lot of doubts regarding that money, and there's a lot of speculation, pretty certain, that there
05:33are at least some corruption, some things that are not being explained fully.
05:38Lula are super pressed on that.
05:40And also, the accusations and the links that, again, are mixing Flavio Bolsonaro with criminal ties, particularly in Rio de
05:52Janeiro.
05:52Lula da Silva was pointing to, for example, a case of a five-year-old girl that was murdered,
05:59and that Flavio Bolsonaro voted against the perpetrators going into prison, also the case of activist Marielle Franco.
06:09So there are a lot of these issues that are coming up that have to do with these accusations that
06:16are going both ways.
06:18as well, Flavio Bolsonaro was accusing several different cases of corruption loosely linked to Lula da Silva.
06:28I say loosely because it was not clear in the exchange some of the details that he was pointing to,
06:35but for example, he was talking about Lula's son, and in response, Lula said that anything that had to be
06:42investigated
06:42would be investigated, and that there were no intentions of hindering, quite the opposite.
06:49That investigation was completely open, and he turned it around and said how many times the Bolsonaros had done exactly
06:58the opposite.
06:59So a lot of cross accusations, of course, it's part of the campaign.
07:03We have to see how that impacts on the population, Anna, and we have six days to go to somebody.
07:09Yeah, and we also have the second debate that is scheduled to October 23rd, so we'll see what happens there,
07:17and obviously hoping that you'll be with us informing us, too, and giving us the details.
07:21Thank you very much, Valen.
07:23We'll be here.
