00:00And we are joined by Victoria Pass to go deep on the matter of the Brazilian topic,
00:07which is the presidential runoff that will take place on the Sunday, 25th, this October.
00:16Hello, Victoria, can you hear me?
00:19Yes, I can hear you. Hello, good night.
00:22Good night. Welcome to From the South.
00:24Well, we want to go deep on the matter of this second runoff that will be taking place this Sunday,
00:32the 25th.
00:39Sure.
00:42Well, what can you tell us about the sphere that will be headed on this Sunday, the 25th?
00:52Or what are you expecting of this second runoff?
00:58I think that what we have here is an election that can decide not only the future of our country,
01:06but also the future of our entire region, Latin America and Caribbean, and furthermore, the whole world.
01:13So, it's an election that talks about the dimension of our future in a larger place,
01:21because we are, we have the fear that if Flávio Bolsonaro wins,
01:29he will want to change the constitution of Brazil.
01:33That was a really big win for us after the dictatorship.
01:37And this can mean, actually, the loss of our very young, very youth democracy that we have here.
01:46So, we have a fear that it's about not only the next four years of our country,
01:55but the next years, many years to go in our countries.
01:59And what we are facing here is an extreme far right that can maintain themselves in the power for many
02:08years
02:08and in a very, in the type of government that is very similar to what we have lived here in
02:16the dictatorship,
02:17in dictatorship in 64.
02:21And there has been a lot of support from young people,
02:26especially students that went to the streets in support of Lula's after the first,
02:31the first elections that were on this October 4th.
02:40Yes, since the first round, we, we, we saw that the youth, the students, the movement students,
02:46but the youth in general in our country, the one that walks, the one that does,
02:50the studies, um, they were the one who were going to decide this election.
02:55And so, what we see now, these movements, the people in the streets, um,
03:02and the, the, the youth coming and showing up their faces is something very important
03:07because it talks about how they are claiming their future,
03:11how they're claiming the political arena in our country.
03:15And not only, um, in the, um, in the debate, in the social medias,
03:20and also in the way they're helping the president Lula to engage in this place,
03:26but also in the, um, and how we are back to occupying the streets
03:32and showing the world that we are a big force here in Brazil,
03:37that the left is here, and that we are ready also to show it,
03:41not only to, to the extreme right here in Brazil, but also in the whole world.
03:46Yeah, and there is also an important thing that, that the Brazilian people could achieve
03:53the World Week 641, and the Brazilian people won,
03:59not only because of the proposal of the government,
04:02but that's an historical win for the people,
04:04and that was one of the current president's proposal,
04:08and the Congress approved it.
04:14Yes, this was a very big victory for us,
04:18uh, especially, um, coming so close to the, the, the day of the election.
04:22This is something that, again, talks about our future,
04:26talks about the kind of, um, public now we,
04:31that is going to decide the elections, which are the working class.
04:35So having this victory, there was, uh, a popular victory,
04:39there was a popular movements and parties here in Brazil,
04:43uh, debate that was brought to the Congress.
04:46Um, it's a very big win for us.
04:49We are fearing losing this right, right now,
04:54because the proposal of the other side is to,
04:57having the ability, the capacity to talk to your employee,
05:03and ask for, uh, how you're going to organize your work.
05:07And this is not something possible.
05:09This is something that doesn't exist, doesn't work.
05:12And we showed our force here in the Congress,
05:16but also in the streets.
05:17And, but if, uh, Lula loses this election,
05:21we are facing the possibility of losing a right
05:24because of how the Congress and the Senate are organized
05:29after this first round here in Brazil.
05:32Yeah, and there has also been support for Lula
05:36after the, let's call it a metal,
05:39the metal scandal after the metal was no showing
05:42Lula da Silva on social media,
05:44just a flabble scenario.
05:47And the people went to the streets
05:48and went to protest to the metal headquarters
05:50to ask them why they are being hiding Lula
05:55in these, in these huge elections that Brazil is facing.
06:03Yes, this is a very important public demonstration
06:07of our debate here in Brazil about sovereignty,
06:11about digital sovereignty with the, with the phrase,
06:15META, keep your hands off our elections.
06:18Uh, we had more than 300 people today in the streets
06:22in the META quartership in Faria Lima in São Paulo
06:26protesting and talking about, uh, our sovereignty
06:30in our country, how we talk about the debate
06:33about transparency into the elections,
06:37um, and also not asking, but, um, saying
06:43that we're not going to let them control
06:45through algorithms, through money,
06:48um, how people, what narrative is going to,
06:53it's, it's common to the people, uh,
06:55that uses the social media in general.
06:58So it's a very important, uh, act
07:01of the popular movements of the parties here in Brazil,
07:04because this is a big part of our elections
07:08and something that after the elections, we,
07:11it's, it's something that we need to keep on debate
07:14because it's something that controls,
07:16they have the ability of controlling, uh,
07:20the narratives in our countries.
07:22And, uh, it's, uh, it's very dangerous
07:26to a democracy.
07:28Yeah.
07:29Well, Victoria, it was a pleasure to have you here
07:32in from the South, giving us and going deep
07:35into this important topic that are the Brazil,
07:38that is the Brazil's election.
07:40Thank you very much for being with us.
07:44You're welcome.
