Would Michigan be in a better position if they played Tommy Carr sooner?
Transcript
00:00Tommy Carr taking over at halftime.
00:03Michigan's offense woke up and won.
00:05Yep.
00:06What took so long?
00:09A shrug emoji.
00:10I don't know.
00:12Because even last week,
00:14the last week or during the bye week,
00:18Kyle Whittingham said,
00:20you know,
00:20they don't make these decisions based on money or anything else.
00:25It was,
00:26and what I kind of laughed,
00:30at one of the reasons why they said they weren't playing him,
00:34because he's 6'4", 195.
00:38Like, you know,
00:39he needs to put some meat on the frame.
00:41Sure, he needs to put some meat on the frame.
00:44But when he was playing out there,
00:46did you think,
00:47oh my goodness,
00:47don't let him get hit.
00:49He's going to break in half.
00:50Nope.
00:51That was,
00:51to me,
00:52I just did not understand that comment.
00:55The other comment they made is,
00:57well,
00:57we got to take care of the football.
00:59And Bryce had two picks in the first half,
01:01and he had had too many poor decisions leading into the game.
01:05I guess they reached their breaking point.
01:07I don't know why they needed an extra half,
01:08why they needed an extra game.
01:10We had talked about making this change during Minnesota.
01:12Right.
01:13Did they win the Minnesota game?
01:14And I've said this many times,
01:16not every interception is created equal.
01:19The two against Minnesota were,
01:21to me,
01:22egregious.
01:23Okay.
01:24The ones that he had,
01:25obviously you can't turn the ball over,
01:27and it all falls on the quarterback,
01:29but two amazing interceptions,
01:32right?
01:32The one was underthrown to Andrew Marsh.
01:35Yes.
01:35That's why it was an interception,
01:37because it was thrown late,
01:37and it was underthrown.
01:39Yep.
01:39But to have it bounce off of Andrew Marsh's leg
01:43into a receiver or a defender
01:46that wasn't actually the defending,
01:48the defender that was guarding Andrew Marsh,
01:50like that's kind of obscure.
01:52And then the reason that the second one was intercepted
01:55was because he stared at him the entire time.
01:58There were other throws that were worse
02:00that just weren't intercepted,
02:02but he made an unbelievable one-handed interception.
02:05That one was more on the receiver,
02:07because J.G. Buchanan,
02:08because he didn't have a chance to catch the ball,
02:11and he should have taken down the defender.
02:13But you throw those two interceptions,
02:16and it was the perfect opportunity,
02:19much like it was against Minnesota.
02:20We talked about that the last two weeks,
02:22to make a change.
02:24What I'm saying is if they had made the change
02:26against Minnesota,
02:28do you not get the interceptions?
02:30Do you win the game?
02:31Does Michigan only have one loss right now?
02:34Well, you weren't going to make that change
02:36before he threw the interceptions.
02:38Yes, maybe they should have started him in that game.
02:41They should have made that change earlier.
02:44But they made the change when they made,
02:46and I don't know if it's cost them wins,
02:51because it's still a team offensively,
02:54and even when Tommy was in there,
02:55I still have some questions about some of the play call
02:58and the offense design.
03:01But they started getting some big runs,
03:04some explosive runs in that game,
03:07in the second half.
03:08My point is, the offensive line
03:11did Bryce Underwood no favors
03:14by, it wasn't a protection issue
03:16until the second half of Minnesota,
03:17but by not being able to run the football,
03:20and then putting it all on the quarterback.
03:21He was not prepared to be the guy
03:24that goes out there and wins games.
03:26He wasn't going to be able to do it.
03:28Yes, they should have made this change earlier.
03:30Their offense did wake up.
03:33Is it just me?
03:34I saw a little less Rhino.
03:35On those big runs, those weren't Rhino runs.
03:37And I think the defense has to respect the guy
03:39who can actually process and pass.
03:42I mean, those things will help a run game.
03:43Power runs right in between the tackles.
03:46Sure.
03:47Which is how this offensive line was successful last year.
03:50There were some, I mean,
03:51yes, you should be able to run to the edge.
03:53You have to be able to do that
03:55because if you don't,
03:55then teams are just going to load up
03:56between the tackles and say you can't run.
03:59You've got to be able to do it all.
04:01But that's where this offensive line
04:05is going to excel.
04:07Now what happens with Bryce?
04:13And that's kind of how this works, right?
04:16It's how it typically works
04:19with today's era of college athlete.
04:23I don't know what Bryce is going to do.
04:26And it may be the best thing for him
04:29is to get a fresh start somewhere else.
04:31To get into a different offense
04:34with a coaching staff that has
04:37whatever the magic is
04:38that they need to develop him
04:40because it hasn't happened here in Ann Arbor.
04:43Doesn't mean it can't in the future.
04:45It just hasn't to this point.
04:47But it's Tommy's job now.
04:48I would think so.
04:49I would anticipate that we will hear
04:52from Coach Whittingham today
04:54and he'll be definitive on
04:56and I would not expect that
05:00they'll make the decision internally.
05:02I don't know if he'll make that public
05:04because that's something that they can hold
05:06in their back pocket.
05:09Indiana should anticipate
05:10that it's going to be Tommy Carr.
05:13Let's go to the phones.
05:14We got texts as well.
05:15248-539-9797.
05:18Touchdown, Tommy.
05:19What took so long
05:20and what does this mean
05:21for Michigan moving forward?
05:23Let's go to Joe in Bloomfield.
05:24Joe, good morning.
05:26Good morning.
05:28So, yeah, great win, I think,
05:29for Michigan.
05:30It feels good.
05:31But it may have been better.
05:33John, what do you think about this?
05:34If that he came in at halftime
05:37rather than waiting all week
05:38and maybe being nervous,
05:39maybe that's a factor
05:40that worked out in his favor.
05:42And secondly,
05:42I didn't follow their career
05:44in high school at Saline.
05:45Who was the better quarterback
05:46statistically there?
05:48Oh, you mean,
05:49what was it,
05:50Tommy in high school
05:51versus Bryce in high school?
05:53Yeah, for CJ.
05:53Yeah, CJ.
05:54Oh, for CJ.
05:55I don't know what their numbers were.
05:59Nor do I really care.
06:01I don't mean to discount your point, Joe,
06:03but it's,
06:05I don't know
06:06what those numbers were in high school.
06:08I don't follow high school football
06:09close enough for that.
06:10Yeah.
06:11But I do know that he's got,
06:14it might have been better for him.
06:14Yeah, he's got a big arm.
06:16He can make the throws.
06:19And what we saw in the second half
06:21was an offense that felt like
06:23they started to gain some confidence.
06:25It was that spark that we thought,
06:28should have happened against Minnesota.
06:29Joe, why do you feel like
06:30they shouldn't have started the game
06:31with that spark?
06:33I just feel like maybe,
06:35and you know,
06:36if it was on Valenny's show,
06:37I'm sure he'd get the drop,
06:38but I played high school quarterback
06:40and you know,
06:41when you were going in
06:42for the first time,
06:43thinking about it all week,
06:44it's like icing the kicker, right?
06:46It just gives you more time
06:47to think about it.
06:48Maybe it was better for him
06:49to go to half.
06:54I don't know that
06:55that really matters, Joe.
06:57because you're sitting there
06:59on the sideline
06:59wondering if this is the moment
07:01that I'm going in.
07:02You work yourself up
07:03into a frenzy.
07:03You can on the sidelines.
07:05And I did like the quote
07:07that we came out of break with.
07:09I tell the kids this all the time.
07:12You never know
07:14when your opportunity
07:15is going to come.
07:16You better be ready.
07:17And who did I learn that from?
07:19Grandpa Carr.
07:21Yeah.
07:21And there's another player.
07:23Yeah.
07:24There's another player there,
07:25Avery Gatch,
07:26who I've been telling
07:28that same thing to
07:29since he was at Michigan.
07:31Like,
07:32you never know
07:32when your opportunity
07:33is going to come
07:34because it may only come once.
07:36And if you go out there
07:37and lay an egg,
07:38you may not get that chance again.
07:40I lived it
07:41going in as a,
07:43you know,
07:43a redshirt freshman
07:45knowing that
07:46my opportunity
07:47may not come again
07:47so I better make the most of it.
07:49Avery Gatch did that.
07:50Tommy Carr did that.
07:51They had some young players
07:53go in there
07:53and play extremely well.
07:56Text coming in says,
07:58just makes you wonder
07:59how Michigan would have done
08:00with Carr at quarterback
08:00against Minnesota and Iowa.
08:03Another says,
08:04I'm hearing rumors
08:05that Bryce spent
08:06the off week in California.
08:07Can you confirm this,
08:08Kevin,
08:09in Birmingham?
08:12I heard those rumors as well.
08:14So,
08:15Ryan Armani
08:15from Fox 2,
08:17a Michigan grad,
08:18tweeted
08:19that the CBS sideline reporter
08:21said that during the game.
08:22I did not hear that.
08:23I didn't hear it either.
08:24But I don't think
08:25Ryan would make up
08:26that the sideline reporter
08:27said that.
08:28Right.
08:29Now,
08:29I don't know
08:30if that was
08:33because I believe
08:34he was there
08:35for the practices.
08:36And Coach told us
08:37what the practice schedule was.
08:38It was Tuesday,
08:39Wednesday,
08:40Thursday.
08:40Then they had
08:41the weekend off.
08:42Was that,
08:43hey,
08:43as soon as
08:44Thursday's practice ended,
08:45he hopped the plane
08:46out there
08:47and spent
08:47Friday,
08:48Saturday,
08:48Sunday
08:49with...
08:49Yeah,
08:50there was no context
08:51provided in the tweet.
08:51That's where my problem is.
08:53It could have very easily
08:54been that.
08:55And who cares,
08:55right?
08:56Who cares if the team
08:57is off
08:58and they're not practicing
08:59and he goes to California?
09:00Right.
09:00That's my point.
09:01Yeah,
09:01it was a bigger issue
09:02for me
09:03that it would have been
09:04all week
09:04and he wasn't there
09:05practicing with the team.
09:06They would have to
09:06on their days off.
09:08You know?
09:09Right.
09:10Yeah.
09:12I'm assuming
09:14that's
09:14what the travel plan
09:16was
09:17for Bryce.
09:19Texas,
09:20let's not let a decent
09:21half of football
09:21have us doing
09:22revisionist history.
09:23I think this is something
09:24we had discussed
09:25for weeks
09:26and I don't know
09:27that it's going to look
09:28good against Indiana
09:29but this is a change
09:29Michigan should have
09:31made sooner.
09:32Well,
09:32we'll get...
09:33I mean,
09:33it's...
09:33Okay.
09:35You've got to take
09:35the win
09:36with a bit of
09:36a grain of salt.
09:37It was against Penn State,
09:38a team that is still
09:39looking for their
09:40first Big Ten win.
09:41But this was why
09:42you should play him
09:42in this game
09:43or start him
09:43in this game
09:44was the bye week
09:45winnable game
09:46at home.
09:47Well,
09:48and we heard...
09:49knowing what you have
09:50coming up.
09:51I agree.
09:51Should have started
09:52but we also heard
09:54the last week
09:54that he was getting
09:55a number of reps
09:56with the ones
09:56and then it was
09:58framed with,
09:58well,
09:58this is what we do
09:59in the bye week.
10:00Okay.
10:02I think he should
10:03have been the starter.
10:04It was clear
10:05that Bryce
10:06was struggling,
10:07was not getting
10:08the job done
10:09offensively.
10:10The entire offense
10:13was trying to find
10:14something that worked
10:16and then all of a sudden
10:17he comes in,
10:18he creates that spark
10:20and you find a way
10:21to,
10:22one,
10:22throw the ball
10:23a little bit,
10:24make it at least
10:24a threat that you're
10:25going to,
10:26and then all of a sudden
10:27if that happens,
10:28maybe you don't have
10:28eight guys in the box
10:29and you can actually
10:31have some explosive runs.
10:32Bryce and Kuzdahl,
10:33save you on hider.
10:35We want to talk
10:35to Michigan fans
10:36this morning,
10:36got a win against
10:37Penn State
10:37and began the
10:38Tommy Carr era.
10:39It's 97-1.
10:40on.
