00:06Some people see something they can't explain, then spend the rest of their lives trying to
00:11forget it. One man approached a strange object in the Canadian wilderness and came home with
00:17a pattern burned into his chest. A woman fleeing a red-eyed creature later claimed to see it outside
00:22her window, and another witness watched a few seconds of film turn his family's life upside
00:28down. For each of these people I will discuss tonight, the encounter was only the beginning.
00:34These are five people who claim to have witnessed something inexplainable and struggled to leave it
00:39behind. Stefan Michalak
00:49When Stefan Michalak saw an opening in the side of a strange object, he did something most of us
00:55probably wouldn't. He walked closer. He thought there might be people inside, and as an industrial
01:01mechanic, he thought he might be able to help. It was May 20th, 1967. Stefan was prospecting for
01:09quartz and silver near Falcon Lake, around 150 kilometers east of Winnipeg, when a loud cackling
01:15of geese interrupted him. Something had disturbed them. Looking up, he saw what he described as two
01:22cigar-shaped objects, surrounded by an intense reddish glow. One disappeared into the sky.
01:28The other descended onto a flat section of rock, roughly 50 meters away. As it landed, Stefan said
01:35its shape appeared to change, becoming more like a disc. He assumed he was watching an experimental
01:40aircraft. Then he heard something that seemed to support that explanation. Voices. According to Stefan,
01:48Stefan, two voices were coming from an opening in the side. They sounded human, but the words were
01:53muffled. He called out in English, but received no response. He then tried Polish, his native language,
02:00then Russian and German. Still nothing. Close enough to examine the exterior,
02:05he described an incredibly smooth surface, with no obvious seams. Wearing his safety goggles,
02:11he looked through the opening, and saw what he called a brilliant maze of lights. Before he could
02:17make out anything more, three panels moved into place, and sealed it shut. Stefan reached out and
02:24touched the exterior. It was hot enough to burn through his glove. Then the object tilted and began
02:29rotating counterclockwise. As it took off, a blast knocked him to the ground, and set his shirt and
02:37undershirt light. He tore the burning clothing from his body, but his chest had already been injured.
02:44Weak and nauseous, and suffering from a headache, Stefan eventually made his way out to the wilderness,
02:49and caught a bus back towards Winnipeg. His account soon appeared in newspapers across Canada
02:54and the United States. But it was the photographs of his chest that made people stop and look.
03:00The burns formed a strange, grid-like pattern. Take a look.
03:06Whatever happened in that clearing, Stefan had come home with injuries he would now have to explain.
03:13In the days that followed, he reportedly suffered vomiting, severe headaches, and loss of appetite and
03:19fainting spells. He also lost a significant amount of weight. Doctors examined him, and investigators
03:27carried out medical assessments and radiation testing. Those examinations did not produce an
03:33agreed explanation for the encounter. Stefan supplied detailed sketches of the object and the location,
03:40and investigators eventually found the area he described, where radioactive material was reportedly
03:46recovered from cracks in the rock. His discarded clothing also showed damage associated with this
03:51distinctive pattern. These findings became central to the case, but they did not establish what Stefan had
03:59seen, or how he had been injured. Meanwhile, the investigation had spread beyond the clearing.
04:05Reporters questioned people who knew him. His character, credibility, and mental state became
04:10subject to public discussion, and Stefan later recalled being deeply afraid of ridicule. Yet there was a detail
04:17about his encounter that often became lost in the coverage. He never claimed to have met aliens.
04:22He believed he had approached a physical craft of unknown origin and been injured when it took off.
04:28The more extraordinary interpretations often come from other people.
04:33The crazy thing is, Stefan continued to stand by his account until his death in 1999.
04:39He had walked towards the object because he thought he understood what it was,
04:43but for the next 32 years, he lived with what happened when he got too close.
04:55Robert Taylor said that two small spiked objects dragged him towards a hovering craft.
05:01When he returned home, the police investigated his report as an assault.
05:06The story begins on November 9th, 1979.
05:10The Scottish forestry worker drove into Deschmont Woods near Livingston, accompanied by his dog.
05:15As he walked through the trees, he noticed an unfamiliar smell, something he compared to spilled
05:21chemicals. He followed it deeper into the woods when his dog began barking violently.
05:26Ahead of them was a clearing, and according to Taylor, something was hovering above the ground.
05:32He described a dark grey object roughly 20 feet across and 12 feet high.
05:37It was silent and appeared motionless, but its surface was harder to describe.
05:43Bright areas seemed to move across a duller background, and to Taylor, it looked as though
05:48the object was changing its appearance, perhaps even trying to become invisible.
05:53A ring around its middle gave it the shape of a giant hat, and several stems extended from the
05:59exterior, topped with what he described as small propellers.
06:03While he was still trying to understand it, two smaller objects emerged.
06:08They were round, covered in spikes, and moving straight towards him.
06:12Taylor claimed they seized his trousers and began pulling him towards the larger object.
06:17He struggled, but the chemical smell had become overwhelming.
06:20He then apparently lost consciousness, and when he came around, the objects were gone.
06:26His dog was still racing around the clearing, barking.
06:29Taylor tried to call it back, but he couldn't make a sound.
06:32He was too weak to even stand.
06:35For a time, he crawled through the woods, until enough strength returned to him.
06:40For him to reach his pickup truck, he tried to call for help on the radio,
06:43but his voice still hadn't returned.
06:46He then attempted to drive home, only to get stuck in the mud,
06:50eventually abandoning the vehicle and continuing on foot.
06:53His wife was shocked by the state of him.
06:56He was exhausted, dishevelled, and clearly distressed, and the police were called.
07:00Military and civilian aircraft records offered no explanation for what Taylor described,
07:04but when officers visited the clearing, they found marks on the ground.
07:08There were two parallel, ladder-like tracks, each around 2.5 metres long,
07:14and around them were approximately 40 circular holes.
07:19The marks could not tell investigators what had made them,
07:22but they gave officers something physical to examine, alongside Taylor's account.
07:27Now, his reputation also mattered.
07:29People who knew him described him as quiet and reliable,
07:33and police treated the incident as a possible criminal assault.
07:37Now, that classification did not confirm his explanation.
07:40It did, however, mean that his report became more than a strange story passed around the town.
07:46Taylor now found himself answering questions about an experience
07:50he said had left him unconscious in the woods.
07:53Over the years, his account was challenged, and alternative explanations were proposed.
07:59Later accounts also described lingering distress and nightmares.
08:03But through it all, Taylor continued to tell the same story.
08:07He died in 2007, nearly three decades after the encounter.
08:12Those who knew him said he was never quite the same after this event,
08:15and spent the rest of his life trying to understand what exactly it was.
08:19There was no film of what he described, no photograph of the hovering object,
08:24only his account, his condition afterwards, and the marks left in the clearing.
08:29Now, if you think this one is strange,
08:31our next witness spent years trying to find the evidence his own story was missing,
08:35and he eventually found it in the form of a recording.
08:45In 1992, Paul Freeman recorded something moving through the forest that people still argue about.
08:52By then, he had already spent ten years searching for it.
08:56His original encounter reportedly happened in 1982 while he was working as a watershed patrolman
09:02near Washington's Blue Mountains.
09:05Freeman claimed an enormous, reddish-brown creature walked across the road in front of him.
09:11The sighting became a turning point.
09:13His account attracted scepticism and ridicule,
09:15and the attention surrounding it reportedly contributed to his departure from his forest service job.
09:21But leaving the job did not mean leaving the encounter behind.
09:25Freeman began returning to remote areas, following sighting reports and searching the ground for tracks.
09:32He made plaster casts of alleged Bigfoot footprints,
09:36and built a collection of evidence he believed supported his story.
09:39And for years, he kept looking.
09:42And then, in 1992, he recorded the footage that would make his name familiar far beyond the Blue Mountains.
09:50Watch the space between the trees.
10:02Look at that.
10:13Can't see much up through here.
10:17I hear the brush popping and stuff.
10:26Oh, there he goes!
10:35Jesus!
10:39To supporters of Bigfoot, the recording appears to show a large, heavy figure moving through the forest.
10:45Now, to sceptics, it could just be a person in a costume.
10:48But that doesn't explain the footprints.
10:50Some of Freeman's casts attracted serious interest from researchers, including anthropologists.
10:57Other investigators questioned his methods and whether part of his evidence had been fabricated.
11:03Now, he continued searching, spending his own money and years of his life pursuing leads through the mountains.
11:09The trouble was that every piece of evidence he came forward with could, of course, be disputed.
11:14A footprint can be challenged, a recording can be dismissed.
11:17But Freeman died in 2003, maintaining strongly that Bigfoot was real, and he'd seen him.
11:24He left us with two questions.
11:26What is moving through the trees in that recording?
11:29And what did Freeman encounter ten years earlier that made him dedicate so much of his life to finding it
11:34again?
11:35For our next witness, unlike Freeman, seeing a creature again was precisely what she feared.
11:47Linda Scarberry said a creature followed their car as they fled towards Point Pleasant.
11:52Weeks later, she claimed to see it again.
11:54This time, it was on the roof outside of a window.
11:58The first widely reported encounter took place on November 15th, 1966.
12:03Linda and her husband, Roger, were driving with another young couple, Stephen Mary Mallette, near the TNT area,
12:10a former wartime munitions facility outside of Point Pleasant, West Virginia.
12:15There they claimed to encounter a creature around seven feet tall, with large wings and glowing red eyes.
12:21The couple supposedly drove away in terror.
12:23According to their accounts, the creature followed at high speed, screeching as they tried to escape.
12:29They said the pursuit stopped when they reached the city limits, and their story quickly spread.
12:35Other witnesses came forward with reports of a large, red-eyed creature.
12:39Among them were volunteer firefighters and a contractor, Newell Partridge, who said its eyes reflected his flashlight like bicycle reflectors.
12:47Partridge also associated his encounter with strange television noises and the disappearance of his German Shepherd.
12:54For Linda, the weeks after the sighting brought more than just a creature to be frightened of.
12:59In later accounts connected to the Mothman sightings, witnesses described mysterious men asking questions and warning people against discussing what
13:08they had seen.
13:08In addition, Linda's description was especially unsettling.
13:11She claimed the men wore black suits, hats and dark sunglasses, and travelled in black vehicles she believed were Cadillacs.
13:19Their appearance seemed ordinary at first, but she recalled unusually long, thin fingers and skin through which the veins in
13:27their hands appeared strikingly visible.
13:30When her father tried to shake hands with one of them, Linda said the man's response was awkward and hesitant,
13:36as though the gesture was unfamiliar.
13:38These were Linda's direct claims, rather than independently established facts, but she described the visits as part of a wider
13:45series of frightening experiences.
13:48She also said a vehicle carrying three of the men reportedly followed her family, even trailing them through a restaurant
13:54drive-through.
13:54The family watched it in the rearview mirror, too frightened to confront its occupants.
14:01Meanwhile, journalists and investigators were arriving in Point Pleasant.
14:06Linda found herself repeatedly explaining an encounter that other people were beginning to turn into a legend.
14:12According to later accounts, she and Roger experienced unexplained noises and disturbances after moving into her parents' home,
14:19and then came the reported December sightings.
14:23Linda claimed again that the Mothman was sitting on the roof outside of a window.
14:27For someone who had believed she'd already been chased by it, that would have made the distance between the TNT
14:32area and home feel very small.
14:35Decades later, returning to the original location was still difficult for her.
14:40During filming for the 2001 documentary, Search for the Mothman, Linda accompanied a production crew back to the TNT area.
14:48Accounts of the filming described her becoming so frightened that the interview had to be stopped.
14:53By the time she died in 2011, Mothman had become part of American folklore.
14:59Visitors could arrive in Point Pleasant, explore the story, and then leave.
15:03But Linda had spent decades living with her account of it.
15:07Just like our final witness, they also became part of a story known around the world.
15:11But for years, you wanted nothing more to do with it.
15:22Millions of people have seen the Patterson-Gimlin film.
15:25Far few know why one of the men who witnessed it spent decades avoiding questions about Bigfoot.
15:30Bigfoot, for Bob Gimlin, the fallout eventually reached his wife's workplace.
15:35It all began in October 1967.
15:38Gimlin and his friend Roger Patterson travelled on horseback through Bluff Creek, California,
15:43searching for evidence of Bigfoot.
15:46The area had a history of reported sightings and discoveries of large human-like footprints.
15:51On the afternoon of October 20th, they claimed to spot a figure near a creek.
15:56Patterson's horse reared, he dismounted, retrieved his camera, and called for Gimlin to cover him.
16:02Then he began filming.
16:04Here is the footage presented as the original recording.
16:26That brief sequence would become one of the most famous pieces of disputed footage ever recorded.
16:32Supporters have analysed its movement, proportions, and apparent anatomy.
16:37Skeptics have argued that it shows a person wearing a costume.
16:42Decades of scrutiny have produced no universally accepted resolution.
16:46But on the day itself, Patterson and Gimlin said they followed the figure until they lost it.
16:52They filmed the tracks and made plastic casts of footprints.
16:56Only afterwards did they begin to discover what the film would mean for them.
17:00Patterson saw an opportunity to promote it, but Gimlin wanted to get back to work.
17:05They initially travelled together looking for interest in their story,
17:09but Gimlin had horses to care for and eventually returned home.
17:14According to him in later accounts, Patterson continued promoting the film
17:18and hired another man to impersonate him at appearances.
17:22Their friendship soon broke down, and he said they did not speak again until Patterson was dying in 1972.
17:30Patterson apologised and Gimlin forgave him, but the public attention continued.
17:36Gimlin felt that other people had benefited from the footage while he was left dealing with the mockery.
17:41Then the ridicule began affecting his wife at her job at a bank.
17:45For years afterwards, Gimlin avoided interviews and questions about Bigfoot.
17:51While the film was replayed, enlarged, and debated around the world, including on this channel,
17:56one of its two witnesses was trying to keep it out of his everyday life.
18:01But all that changed in 2003.
18:03Researcher Dmitry Bayanov persuaded Gimlin to attend a conference in California.
18:08He reluctantly agreed and told his entire story to the audience,
18:13for someone who had spent years expecting ridicule.
18:16He was met with applause.
18:18Gimlin began attending more conferences, giving interviews, and meeting people who regarded the film as extraordinary.
18:24But he kept a boundary around his home, reportedly promising his wife that people associated with Bigfoot would not visit
18:31them there.
18:32He eventually became one of the best-known witnesses in the subject, after spending decades trying to distance himself from
18:39it.
18:40Through the years, he continued to maintain that the encounter was real.
18:44It's crazy, because the film lasts less than a minute, but the argument has lasted for decades.
18:51For people watching, it's a mystery that they can pause, replay, or switch off.
18:55But for Gimlin, it became part of his life, long after the figure disappeared into those trees.
