BIGGEST DIFFERENCE with Drake Maye between Weeks 1-3, and the last 2? Former Patriots QB Brian Hoyer joins! What does Hoyer see?
Hoyer: "This past game against the Raiders, probably the best game of his career". Confidence different?
A.J. Brown practicing? Playing this week? Whenever he is indeed back, what is the biggest thing that A.J. Brown will bring to this offense?

00:00morning brian good morning guys how we doing good how are you i'm great beautiful fall day uh
00:07patriots big victory and uh the new york uh jets come into town which we hate so i hope that
00:14we
00:15keep the momentum going and uh take them on a on a uh big win like they had over the
00:20raiders
00:21um speaking of that couple weeks in a row here where drake may looks completely different than
00:26he did the first three weeks of the season what what are you seeing what what is the difference
00:31when it comes to drake well i just think you know we talked a few weeks ago and everybody was
00:35the sky
00:36was falling you know should we bench this guy and i remember just telling you guys like there's a lot
00:41of good plays there it's just the ones that he's got to eliminate and and how quickly he was able
00:45to do that i thought you know once he had put together a good drive the confidence would change
00:51pretty quickly and i think that's what happened on that first drive in buffalo and since then
00:55i thought he's played really really good football i think this past game against the raiders probably
00:58the best game of his career just the confidence with which he threw the football obviously the
01:04protection was incredible um so it's just one of those games where everything was clicking on his
01:08behalf his feet were really good um he was making good decisions i mean some of the throws the one
01:13that
01:13i was most impressed with was that the throw up the sideline to eli raritan i thought was just
01:17a phenomenal throw yeah they tried to disguise this little tampa too and typically you wouldn't think
01:23about the wheel right wheel route up the sideline but the corner kind of sinks and uh he hit him
01:28perfectly in stride so a lot to be excited about not just with drake but i think just the entire
01:32offense um obviously you're down a few guys due to injury i thought the offensive line stepped up
01:38lomu when he had the opportunity to go in did a good job um and so you know in spite
01:43of all the
01:43injuries they're still putting together really good football brian we talked to vrabel on monday and he
01:48talked about his decision making being better and that they work on that in practice what what does
01:55that mean like how does a quarterback work on decision making in practice practice well you
02:00know i don't know how vrabes is running his practices but i just know you know from experience playing for
02:05josh and obviously bill like don't make it easy in practice don't don't give the looks that are the
02:11premier looks on every single play in practice i mean that's the reality is if you want to work on
02:16decision making during the week you can't just make it everything is is a perfect scenario in
02:21practice because that's not how it's going to go during the games and so i don't know if that's
02:25what they're doing is we always used to joke with josh because on thursday ernie adams would draw the
02:30cards for the scout team and we would have no idea what the defense is going to be i mean
02:34it could be
02:34ernie could find something that a defensive coordinator did back in like 1998 when he was a
02:39defensive coordinator at you know southwest missouri state and throw it in there but it kept you on your
02:44toes and it made you actually go out and and play practice like a game and react and so i
02:49don't know
02:49if that's what they're doing but the only way to me to practice on decision making during the week is
02:53don't just script for success in practice and i know that's something that josh has never done
02:58obviously the head coach has a big say in that as well brian you have the potential of getting aj
03:03brown
03:03back this week what does that do to change this offense what's the biggest thing that he will bring
03:08to change everything well i think the the biggest part is and you saw it this past sunday is just
03:14continue to still spread the football around i think that's when drake is at his best is really when
03:18he's not trying to force it to anyone he wants he reads the defense out he's got time and he
03:23really
03:23lets the defense tell him where to throw the football and i think even when aj gets back uh it's
03:28been great to see guys like pop douglas and chisholm and kyle williams and obviously the tight ends and
03:34rarin and hunter get involved the way they've had and i think the biggest thing is don't just go back
03:39to trying to force it to aj let that come naturally i think the big thing that you'll see is
03:43we never
03:45really got to see it is i think josh will move aj around within the formation which will then present
03:50different opportunities for him to get the football so um i'm not going to compare it to this but i
03:55remember when i played for cleveland we were waiting for josh gordon to come back off his suspension so
03:59very different scenario and the first game he came back it was like every play was designed to go
04:03to him and we i think at that point he had like 17 or 18 attempts his way and so
04:08i i don't think
04:09you should get caught up in that factor um if aj is back this week i think you you go
04:14in with a
04:14game plan you have plays that are obviously specifically designed to go to him but if
04:18they're not there the other guys have shown that they're more than capable to step up and and you
04:22know be be a go-to guy so i think that's the biggest thing is how do you balance your
04:27number one
04:27receiver coming back whatever whenever that may be with also just going through the reads and the
04:32progressions and taking what the defense gives you i'd like to see josh use aj and slot a little
04:36bit more but one of the things that that i did notice is you know more so with romeo dobbs
04:41than
04:42any anybody else and i wonder if this is maybe something we see them do more with aj brown is
04:47when they tend to get in the red zone they like to throw whether it's a fade ball the jump
04:52ball to
04:52dobbs we've seen those situations you think they're going to utilize aj brown in those situations where
04:58you get inside the red zone boom we're calling us number some fades or get inside the five yard line
05:03jump ball back shoulder situations yeah i definitely would and obviously i think wiggy you're kind of
05:08referencing the touchdown in buffalo to dobbs in the red zone that's actually a run play and it just
05:12gives and sometimes when you're in those big personnel groupings in the goal line at the run
05:16you just tag the x fade and and you say hey drake and aj or you know for in that
05:21case it was dobbs
05:22if you like the look you got the freedom to take it so i think that would become a role
05:27that aj
05:27has especially with his back shoulder ability so um and then there's obviously the other you know
05:32pure pass plays that you're going to design down there and using aj size and strength so i think
05:37that's what what makes him so unique and really the way i look at this receiver room is each guy
05:42kind
05:42of has his own thing that he does really well and i think you see josh understanding okay you know
05:48pops our slot guy but he's actually a better vertical route runner let's put him on some deeper stuff
05:52and that's what the first touchdown against the raiders was obviously chisholm has kind of proven he
05:56can do it all whether it's deep in cuts crossing routes the shorter stuff uh kyle williams i think
06:01has one of the best releases when he knows he's going to have a go route now he's got to
06:04use use
06:05that release and translate it to other routes uh obviously you're not going to have matt collins
06:09for a while but he's your big kind of physical guy so they've really assembled a very unique
06:13receiver room where each guy kind of has his own individual trait that he does really well
06:17and then when you can do that is take those guys and put them in the positions to do those
06:21things
06:21and build concepts off of that and dob's thing is dropping balls that are in his hands in the end
06:26zone yeah um yep yes yeah no i mean i the one i thought the other day was a touchdown
06:31i thought
06:32you know and that's kind of what you saw from him in green bay was a contested catch guy and
06:36i think
06:36you just got to have stronger hands we used to call that the top shelf pullback like where you go
06:40up to
06:41the top shelf and you pull it and rip it away from the defender before he can get your your
06:45hands through
06:45that i'm sure you know todd downing and those guys are working with him on that and i think once
06:49he feels you know comfortable doing that and those those plays start really showing up i mean this is
06:54a really dynamic and dangerous receiver group brian we talked a lot about the conclusion to the
07:00commanders giants game who do you put that on you get curtis can i take a break on that real
07:05quick
07:05i'm sorry clockwise i we want to get you on on clock management dan quinn jayden daniels all that also
07:12want to get you on this jets team and what they bring to gillette on sunday so we'll get to
07:18that next
07:18with brian hoyer on the greg hill show at we yeah
