00:00To start, you'll need a piece of wood cut to fit the inside of the basket.
00:05Try to insert the drill bit between the woven strands of the basket to keep those strands intact.
00:10Then carefully insert screws into your drilled holes to secure.
00:14For the unfinished plywood, grab a roll of iron-on veneer banding.
00:19Veneer banding has a pre-glued adhesive on the back that melts and bonds to the wood when you run
00:25an iron over it.
00:26If you're painting your shelf, select a color to complement the room it will be hanging in and give the
00:32basket one to two thin, even coats.
00:35Now hang your basket shelf.
00:37I hung one in my entryway for keys, loose change, and small decorative touches.
00:49And I hung another in our guest bathroom for extra hand towels, a jar of cotton rounds, and a lush
00:56houseplant.
00:57Where will you hang yours?
01:00There are lots of ways to decorate your home with things you already have.
01:05Did you know that your toothbrush holder is really great home decor?
01:09Cut small stems of faux flowers and tuck them into the top openings of a toothbrush holder.
01:17Use three different types of flowers or stems for a beautiful floral arrangement for a bookshelf or table.
01:24Woven storage baskets aren't just for storage anymore.
01:28Hammer a small nail into the wall and hang basket number one, number two, and number three in whatever arrangement
01:37you like.
01:38This is perfect for storing bathroom essentials within easy reach.
01:44Take two woven tissue boxes and some round puck lights with a remote control.
01:50Glue the bottom of a puck light to the inside of a tissue box so it is centered over the
01:56whole of the box.
01:58Do the same for the second tissue box as well.
02:02Make sure the glue dries and the puck lights are securely attached to the boxes.
02:07Run some hot glue around the top of one of the tissue boxes.
02:12Then flip the other tissue box upside down and attach it to the glued top of the other box.
02:19Hammer a nail into the wall.
02:21Hang your new sconce on the wall and turn the lights on with the remote.
02:26Instant wall sconce.
02:29The next time you come across some simple wicker baskets, consider these creative ways to decorate and store with them.
02:36I'm arranging some wicker baskets on the floor that are of similar size.
02:40Reaching for my full plants, I'm placing them inside the various baskets.
02:45Now I'm going to hang each basket on the wall in a few different ways.
02:49If the basket is large enough, I'm attaching the basket to the wall by screwing it from the inside.
02:56With a smaller basket, I'm using a handheld screwdriver to attach it instead.
03:01Finally, I'm inserting a screw into the wall, then simply hanging up a basket.
03:06With all the baskets now hung where desired,
03:09I'm positioning the plants inside each until they have a full and lush look.
03:13And the end result is an instant mini live plant wall that won't need watering.
03:19Next up, I'm selecting a smaller basket with a long handle.
03:23I'm unattaching the handle, reaching for a touch LED light.
03:27The basket is being placed over top of the small lampshade,
03:30instantly transforming a standard lamp into one with rustic personal charm.
03:35My front entry was in desperate need of a tidy up.
03:38I'm removing the jumble of exposed shoes that are piled up under the entry bench,
03:43then sweeping underneath the area until it's clean.
03:46Choosing some baskets that fit under the bench,
03:48I'm sorting out all the shoes by how we use them.
03:51The older gardening shoes are being placed in one basket,
03:54while the everyday good shoes are being placed in another.
03:57Now I'm sliding each basket into place underneath the bench.
04:02This is also a really good time to consider purging a few that are no longer being used.
04:07I'm leaving the area by the door basket-free,
04:09so I can place our most used shoes with an easy sight.
04:13Since I also have some shelves with gloves and such in plain view,
04:16I'm going to beautify that area too.
04:19Each shelf is being completely emptied of all contents for a fresh start,
04:23then brushed clean.
04:24Now baskets are being outfitted onto each shelf to get a feel for what looks good.
04:29Each basket is getting filled with like-minded things,
04:32such as warm gloves and toques,
04:34and in another, gardening gloves, so everything is easy to find.
04:37Now each basket is being placed on the shelves,
04:41with decorative elements being added to pretty it up.
04:44The entry is now a well-organized and beautiful space,
04:47still housing all the same things,
04:49but this time everything is well hidden.
04:52A tall skinny cabinet in my bathroom,
04:54while serviceable,
04:55has all the essentials in full display,
04:57which isn't very pretty.
04:58To create instant shelves to my shutter cupboard,
05:02I'm adding some cut-to-size cedar strips and wood planks,
05:05slipping the boards into place,
05:07creating easy shelving.
05:09Selecting three smaller baskets,
05:11I'm placing one toilet paper roll in each basket,
05:14then positioning one basket per shelf.
05:17And the end result is a lovely cupboard with shelves
05:20that is fun to look at,
05:21thanks to the interesting basket shapes and tones.
05:24With each basket different,
05:26they look like a pretty display.
05:27However, the extra essentials are right within arm's reach
05:30whenever they are needed.
05:33Lastly, here's a fun way to add a decorative element
05:35to your ceiling that takes up no space at all.
05:38I'm gathering up various baskets of different shapes and sizes.
05:43Gathering some different ways to hang each basket,
05:45such as twine, chain, or rope,
05:47I'm creating a way to hang up each basket.
05:50After installing an old window frame to the ceiling,
05:53I'm now hanging up each basket
05:55until the window frame is completely full.
05:57And you end up with a fabulous way
05:59to display all your baskets in an area
06:02that can use a little extra warmth.
06:04These are always good for storage,
06:06but they are also good for upcycled home decor.
06:09Find a basket that is rectangular in shape.
06:12Take a bit of strong twine
06:13and push it through a space in the weave of the basket,
06:16about a third of the way in on the long side.
06:20Tie the twine in a knot close to the top edge of the basket.
06:24Then create a loop by tying another knot in the twine
06:28about an inch above the edge.
06:31Using a straight edge and a level,
06:33lightly draw a line on the wall.
06:35Hammer two hooks into the wall,
06:38using the level line as your guide.
06:40Now hang your basket on the wall.
06:43Since this is in our garage,
06:45I am storing lawn bags,
06:46grocery bags,
06:47and umbrellas for spring and summer.
06:50Then, when colder weather hits,
06:52this will be the perfect place
06:53to toss scarves, hats, and gloves.
06:57You'll want to head to Walmart
06:59to grab some carpet underlay
07:00when you see how upscale this idea turned out.
07:04I'm selecting one 5 1⁄2 inch long cedar board
07:07and one long cedar strip.
07:09Using the depth measurement of the large board,
07:12one end of the board is being marked,
07:14then cut twice,
07:16creating two perfect squares.
07:17I'm positioning a square board upright beside it,
07:21then lifting the back board
07:22to create a closed corner.
07:24On the other side,
07:25I'm marking the board on the table
07:27to the length of the back board,
07:29minus the thickness of the other square board,
07:31then cutting the board down to that size.
07:34All the standing boards now fit snugly
07:36around the flat board,
07:37creating a crate shape
07:39with the front end open.
07:41Before assembling,
07:42all the boards are getting a light sanding
07:44along all the fronts and edges.
07:46After dry-fitting the two crates,
07:48I'm marking,
07:49then pre-drilling pilot holes
07:51to reduce the potential
07:52of the wood splitting when assembling.
07:54The screws are being positioned into each hole,
07:57then screwed in
07:58using gentle pumps with a cordless drill.
08:00With the two crates now assembled,
08:02I'm placing one crate on top
08:04of the sheet of carpet underlay,
08:06which happens to resemble cane material,
08:09roughly cutting it to the size of the crate.
08:11The material is being stapled
08:13to the crate's open end,
08:15starting at the two short ends first,
08:17then along the bottom,
08:18pulling it firm as I work.
08:20After the underlay is tightly trimmed
08:22to the crate shape,
08:23I'm placing a cedar strip
08:25across the top and bottom open end of the crate,
08:28attaching them to the crate with screws.
08:30To mount the crate to a wall,
08:32I'm placing a level on the top,
08:34then securing the crate to the wall,
08:36making two super cool crate-styled shelves
08:39with the look of expensive cane inserts.
08:41I love how the raw wood marries the caning look,
08:45giving these shelves a timeless neutral appeal
08:47that can go with most any decorating style.
