00:06The order went out from the palace before dawn, carried by the priests of Baal and the spears
00:12of the guard. Every prophet of the Lord found in Israel was to die. There was no trial. There
00:23were torches. In the hillside villages, doors were smashed open. Men were dragged from their
00:29homes by their hair, their beards, their robes, and the robes lay empty on the street, left
00:36behind when the men were gone. But there was a man inside the palace who feared the Lord
00:44more than he feared the queen. Obadiah, the king's steward, heard the order given. And
00:51that very night, he slipped out the back gate without a torch, carrying a basket of bread
00:57beneath his cloak. He found them where he knew they would be, hiding in a barn. Twelve hollow-eyed
01:04man. There is no time. Their horses reach this village at first light. There are caves
01:10on the north slope, behind the thorn bushes. Fifty will fit in each.
01:19You serve in the house of Ahab. I do. And you will hide us from the queen of Ahab. I
01:32will. Why? Because
01:36I serve in the house of Ahab. But I am not of the house of Ahab.
01:41Ahab. He led them along the goat path, single file, glancing back every ten paces at the
01:47torches moving through the valley. He held back the thorn bushes so they could pass. He
01:53entered last. And inside the cave, by the light of a single clay lamp, a hundred men sitting
02:01shoulder to shoulder, received a piece of bread and a sip of water from his hand. A hundred,
02:08hidden in the earth, fed in the dark. No one in the palace knew. Jezebel counted the dead
02:17prophets and was pleased with the tally. God counted the living. On the other side of the
02:25Jordan, in the mountains of Gilead, there was a man whom no one took into account. His name
02:32was Elijah. He was from Tishbe, a place that not even the people of Gilead could point out
02:38on a map. He lived in the heights, among rocks and goats, with a goatskin cloak over his shoulders
02:44and a leather belt around his waist. He had no disciples. He had no school. He had nothing
02:50that would make him a prophet in the eyes of men.
