While nostalgia for the original is powerful, the upcoming Assassin's Creed Black Flag remake seems to be sticking too close to the source material. We discuss why being too faithful might be a mistake in an era of innovative remakes.

00:00I loved the original Black Flag.
00:02While that nostalgia was more than enough to carry through Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced,
00:07the familiarity with the classic has also left me feeling like this ambitious remake,
00:11while good enough fun, actually missed the mark a little.
00:15We talked about this in our Black Flag Resynced review,
00:17but with the way it skews so close to the 2013 original,
00:21I've already seen some confusion about whether it's a remake or a remaster.
00:26Ubisoft says it's definitely a remake, fully remade from scratch,
00:30but it's so faithful.
00:31Level geometry, for example, is often one-to-one,
00:34and the more remakes I played in a gaming generation inundated with them,
00:39I'm beginning to think I don't want remakes beholden to this faithfulness.
00:43I much prefer iteration.
00:45Resident Evil 4 remake isn't simply redoing the 2004 original,
00:49it's using what made it great as a springboard to try a fresh take on the same blueprints,
00:55willing to accept stumbling in the process in the name of creativity.
00:58It's as much homage as it is a remake.
01:01RE4 and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth are great examples of turning a remake into an opportunity to try something new.
01:09In doing so, they brought fresh life into their long-running series that were otherwise treading water,
01:14and reshaped how they approach brand new game development.
01:17So I can't help but wonder if Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced had taken a bigger swing,
01:23if Edward Kenway would have had a better grasp of the rudder and be able to steer the franchise into
01:28a fairer wind.
