00:08We're here at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park's condor breeding facility and we're looking at
00:13our first California condor chick of the season. This chick is significant because it's the first
00:22hatch of the season and it's also a very early hatch for California condors. Normally they lay
00:28their eggs between the early to mid-January through April. This egg was laid on December 14th.
00:38This camera system helps us monitor the chicks as they're being reared by the parents in the nest
00:44boxes and we want them to be nice and calm, nice and relaxed as they're rearing the chicks and by
00:50watching them remotely via the cameras to get more natural behaviors, more relaxed birds. Here the
00:58male, his name is Haas, is brooding the chick, keeping it warm. They sit on it for almost all the
01:05time
01:06during the first month of the chick's life. This chick is 14 days old now, she's two weeks old,
01:10and keeping it warm under his wing and the chick's just kind of coming out, getting a little peek.
01:19The chick here, named Tsua Ying, will be with the parents until it fledges or leaves the nest and
01:24that's usually about five months of age or so.
