00:02Here at the San Diego Zoo we have a mixed species exhibit with pygmy hippos and wolves
00:08going in. There are two pygmy hippos. We have a male who his name is Algon, he's six years
00:13old and a female Francesca who's 18 years old. The age is a little different. She's a little older
00:21but he doesn't seem to mind. I gotta say they have a great relationship. Most of the time
00:29they like to sleep together so they're either cuddled up on the beach or snuggled to each other in the
00:34pool.
00:35If they're not eating, they're sleeping.
00:40Well we have Gwenens, two adults and two sub-adults. We have an adult male who is 10 and a
00:47female who is also 10.
00:49Those two have a great relationship also. The two adult Gwenens have two kids. One is four years old,
00:56our male through, and the other one is two years old, our female meaning. The Gwenens spend most of their
01:02day playing.
01:06The tubes that were put out there, the purpose is to kind of keep them working at their goodies.
01:11It has holes on the sides so that when we put treats in them, whether it's peanuts or raisins or
01:18even popcorn,
01:18they use the little fingers to manipulate the goodies out of there and that keeps them busy for a good
01:26part of the day.
01:27And it's rewarding because they are working at it and it makes them use their mind.
01:34You will see sometimes there's interaction with the pygmy hippos and the Gwenens, especially when there's treats in the sand.
01:41They don't mind popping up, you know, pretty quick to go get those peanuts or those raisins.
01:46They'll take a chance to be around those pygmy hippos.
01:49The hippos, they don't mind too much as long as they're not eating their brows.
02:01What I enjoy about that exhibit is just the guests, they just sit there and there'll be a good hour
02:10in front of them,
02:11just even watching the tilapia fish.
02:15Another thing that I really like about that exhibit is just how well it was designed for both species to
02:22just be themselves.
