00:00All right. So you say the Patriots are one and are responsible that their losses are two and two, but
00:06their two losses are entirely Jake Drake May's fault. Why?
00:11Well, the Jacksonville game, I'm not sure if he played a very good ball game if they find themselves on
00:18the winning end. But ultimately, to me, Drake May, thank God, right, as a Patriot fan that last week happened.
00:26And even if they hadn't won that football game, he did more good than bad. There were still some teachable
00:31moments, you know, but but ultimately week one against Seattle, all three interceptions were particularly bad.
00:38They were all on him. And for a guy who was maybe one of the best decision makers at the
00:43quarterback position in all of football last year, to have that type of regression, to look as uncomfortable and to
00:50lack so much confidence, you know, watching him.
00:52It shocked me. Right. You picked the Patriot. You thought the Patriots were going to get blown out, if I'm
00:57not mistaken, in Buffalo.
00:58A hundred percent. Forty to ten, I thought. And I wasn't that, you know, I certainly liked the Bills.
01:03So for me, yes. I mean, I think I think Drake May in Jacksonville, even in that game, I said
01:08that thirty five to six was closer than the score indicated.
01:10I mean, they're fourteen to three marching down about to score a touchdown. And then Drake May has a horrible
01:15turnover.
01:16So for him to lack protecting the football the way he has and to lack confidence when, you know, Mina
01:22Kimes, lover or hater, I love her.
01:24She steadfastly has stated that Drake May was the MVP in football last year. The advanced metrics say it.
01:30I agree with her. So to go from that to what we were seeing now and even a lot of
01:34the noise, I think, was was off base.
01:37But but yes, I absolutely believe that the Patriots. Look, Patriots have a great defense. Right.
01:42Look what they did last week without Christian Barmore and Christian Gonzalez. Right.
01:45And obviously, A.J. Brown isn't there. But absolutely. I put, you know, both losses on Drake May didn't play
01:51great against Pittsburgh either.
01:53My hope is that he can take another step forward, because let's say last week, maybe Drake May did sixty
01:59five percent good, thirty five percent bad.
02:02Right. As Doc Rivers used to say in the NBA to make miss league, the NFL is a win loss
02:08league.
02:08So the Patriots win the game. We focus on what Drake May did. Well, I hope they're focused on still
02:13how maybe not sensing the rush as well as he did last year.
02:16Maybe, you know, still fumbling the ball a little bit. That interception that came off of Romeo Dobbs hands.
02:21That was on Drake May. A good throw changes the picture there. So I think Drake May is on the
02:26right track.
02:27I'm fascinated. I wanted to ask you what you think about the Patriots this weekend.
02:30But absolutely. I I think the Patriots would easily be three and one right now if it weren't for their
02:37poor quarterback play in the first three games.
02:38Yeah, I think it's completely fair. We'll get to the Raiders game here in just one second.
02:43But I'm curious because it does factor into Survivor. September is always, at least recently, it's all carnage.
02:49How much does preseason or the lack of preseason do you think factors in?
02:54Because we get to October and players like Drake May, who didn't take a single snap in the preseason, now
03:00look like Drake May.
03:01But it took them a month to get used to game speed and watching game film and getting ready.
03:06It feels like September is actual training camp and August is just, well, we're going to keep these guys on
03:12ice because we don't want them to get hurt.
03:14That factors into Survivor. But do you think we see a change in the future with that?
03:19Because so many teams have started slowly in September.
03:22It's a great question. It's such a delicate balance to protect your quarterback, if you will, forgetting the other positions
03:29versus getting them a few reps.
03:31And I certainly think it's a case-by-case basis. You know, a guy like Patrick Mahomes coming off the
03:36ACL, you know, the part of me that's saying, well, get them out there.
03:39Get them a little comfortable. Get them a few series. Right. But you can always get injured, whether it's Marcus
03:44Mariota last week. Right.
03:45And, you know, what else I do think we may see a change. Right. And especially with some of the
03:50younger quarterbacks, like I think Deshaun Watson benefited.
03:52I think I don't think he's figured it out fully yet, but I think he benefited from being in that
03:57battle with Shador Sanders in the offseason.
03:59But Tom Brady, toward the end of his career, went out of his way to protect himself.
04:05There were certain moments where he just cowered in the pocket and went down and lived to fight another snap.
04:11And I think there's a big part of that with quarterbacks. You know, Drake May's got to be careful to
04:15protect himself, even in the regular season.
04:17So, but I do think if I'm an NFL coach, I would lean toward getting my guys, even if it's
04:23the last preseason games.
04:24You know, oftentimes over the years, we've seen that third of four preseason games.
04:28When there were four preseason games, you'd play your starters the first half of that third preseason game.
04:34But now that there are only three, I would, if I were coaching an NFL team, I, that would, I
04:39would err on the side of getting them some repetitions.
04:42Because Drake May struggled down the end of last season.
04:46They had this daunting schedule to begin the season.
04:49So I think if Mike Vrabel could go back again, maybe get him some reps.
04:52But, because you can't treat September like the preseason.
04:54You know, look at that, look at the Houston Texans.
04:56They're done.
